    Description: We use Monte Carlo methods to simulate impacts of ecliptic comets on the synchronously rotating satellites of giant planets. We reconfirm the long-standing prediction that the cratering rate should be much higher on the leading hemispheres than on the trailing hemisphere; indeed we find that previously published analytical formulations modestly underestimate the degree of apex-antapex asymmetry to be expected. We then compare our results to new mapping of impact craters on Ganymede, Callisto, and Triton. Ganymede reveals a pronounced apex-antapex asymmetry that is nonetheless much less than predicted. All of Triton's confirmed impact craters are clustered toward the apex of motion, far exceeding the predicted asymmetry. No asymmetry is observed on Callisto. In each case at least one of our basic assumptions must be wrong. Likely candidates include the following: (i) the surfaces of all but the most sparsely cratered satellites are saturated or nearly saturated with impact craters; (ii) these satellites have rotated nonsynchronously over geological time; (iii) most of the craters are made not by heliocentric (Sun-orbiting) comets and asteroids but rather by planetocentric (planet-orbiting) debris of indeterminate origin; or (iv) pathological endogenic resurfacing has created illusions of structure. Callisto's surface is readily classified as nearly saturated. Ganymede's bright terrains, although less heavily cratered than those of Callisto, can also be explained by crater densities approaching saturation on a world where endogenic processes were active. The leading alternative is nonsynchronous rotation, an explanation supported by the distribution of catenae (crater chains produced by impact of tidally disrupted comets). Triton's craters can be explained by planetocentric debris or by capricious resurfacing, but both hypotheses are inherently improbable.

    Description: Recent observations of the Galactic Center region by the GRIS balloon-borne germanium spectrometer have determined that the diffuse 1809 keV emission resulting from the decay of Al-26 has an intrinsic width of 5.4 keV FWHM. This line width indicates that the Al-26 is either at a temperature of approximately 4.5 x 10(exp 8) K or it has a nonthermal velocity of approximately 500 km/s. Previous authors have suggested that the Al-26 must be trapped within dust grains in the ISM in order for these conditions to persist over the 10(exp 6) year lifetime of the aluminum (see e.g. Naya et al. 1996, Chen et al. 1998). We discuss the results of our model for the initial acceleration of the Al-26 in dust grains as they exit their source, Type II supernovae, and their subsequent reacceleration in the ISM by ambient supernova remnant (SNR) shocks. Our results show that dust grains can be maintained at a velocity sufficient to explain the GRIS observation for ISM densities of approximately 0.2 cu cm, dust grain sizes near 10(exp -5) cm, and distances between SNR shocks in the ISM of 100 - 200 pc.

    Description: Blueshifted absorption lines in the UV and X-ray spectra of active galaxies reveal the presence of massive outflows of ionized gas from their nuclei. The intrinsic UV and X-ray absorbers show large global covering factors of the central continuum source, and the inferred mass loss rates are comparable to the mass accretion rates. Many absorbers show variable ionic column densities which are attributed to a combination of variable ionizing flux and motion of gas into and out of the line of sight . Detailed studies of the intrinsic absorbers. with the assistance of monitoring observations and photoionization models. provide constraints on their kinematics] physical conditions. and locations relative to the central continuum source. which range from the inner nucleus (approx.0.01 pc) to the galactic disk or halo (approx.10 kpc) . Dynamical models that make use of thermal winds. radiation pressure. and/or hydromagnetic flows have reached a level of sophistication that permits comparisons with the observational constraints .

    Description: The Stellar Planet Survey is an ongoing astrometric search for giant planets and brown dwarfs around a sample of ~30 M dwarfs. We have discovered several low-mass companions by measuring the motion of our target stars relative to their reference frames. The lowest mass discovery thus far is GJ 802b, a companion to the M5 dwarf GJ 802A. The orbital period is 3.14 +/-0:03 yr, the system mass is 0:214 +/- 0:045 M(circled dot operator), and the semimajor axis is 1:28+/- 0:10 AU or 81 + 6 mas. Imaging observations indicate that GJ 802b is likely to be a brow with the astrometrically determined mass 0:058 +/- 0:021 M(circled dot operator) (1 (sigma) limits). The remaining uncertainty in the orbit is the eccentricity that is now loosely constrained. We dis the system age limits the mass and the prospects of further narrowing the mass range when e is more precisely determined.

    Description: We present a detailed analysis of the 900 ks spectrum of NGC3783 obtained by Chandra in 2000-2001 (Kaspi et al. 2002). We split the data in various ways to look for time dependent and luminosity dependent spectral variations. This analysis, the measured equivalent widths of a large number of X-ray lines, and our photoionization calculations, lead us to the following conclusions: 1) NGC 3783 fluctuated in luminosity, by a factor N 1.5, during individual 170 ks observations. The fluctuations were not associated with significant spectral variations. 2) On a longer time scale, of 20-120 days, we discovered two very different spectral shapes that are noted the high state and the low state spectra. The observed changes between the two can be described as the appearance and disappearance of a soft continuum component. The spectral variations are not related, in a simple way, to the brightening or the fading of the short wavelength continuum, as observed in other objects. NGC3783 seems to be the first AGN to show this unusual behavior. 3) The appearance of the soft continuum component is consistent with beeing the only spectral variation and there is no need to invoke changes in the absorber s opacity. In particular, all absorption lines with reliable measurements show the same equivalent width, within the observational uncertainties, during high and low states. 4) Photoionization model calculations show that a combination of three ionization components, each split into two kinematic components, explain very well the intensity of almost all absorption lines and the bound-free absorption. The components span a large range of ionization and a total column of about 3 x 10(exp 22) per square centimeter Moreover, all components are thermally stable and are situated on the vertical branch of the stability curve.. This means that they are in pressure equilibrium and perhaps occupy the same volume of space. This is the first detection of such a multi-component equilibrium gas in AGN. 5) The only real discrepancy between the model and the observations is the wavelength of the iron M-shell UTA feature. This is most likely due to an underestimation of the dielectronic recombination O VI and discuss its possible origin. 6) The lower limit on the distance of the absorbing gas in NGC3783 is between 0.2 and 3.2 pc, depending of the specific ionization component. The constant pressure assumption imposes an upper limit of about 25 pc on the distance of the least ionized gas from the central sourec.

    Description: In recent Asian Seas International Acoustics Experiment (ASIAEX), extensive moorings have been deployed around the continental shelf break area in the northeast of South China Sea in May 2001. Simultaneous RADARSAT SAR images have been collected during the field test to integrate with the in-situ measurements from moorings, ship-board sensors, and CTD casts. Besides it provides synoptic information, satellite imagery is very useful for tracking the internal waves, and locating surface fronts and mesoscale features. During ASIAEX in May 2001, many large internal waves were observed at the test area and were the major oceanic features for acoustic volume interaction. Based on the internal wave distribution maps compiled from satellite data, the wave crest can be as long as 200 km with amplitude of 100 m. Environmental parameters have been calculated based on extensive CTD casts data near the ASIAEX area. Nonlinear internal wave models have been applied to integrate and assimilate both SAR and mooring data. Using SAR data in deep water as an initial condition, numerical simulations produce the wave evolution on the continental shelf and compared reasonably well with the mooring measurements at the downstream station. The shoaling, turning, and dissipation of large internal waves on the shelf break, elevation solitons, and wave-wave interaction have been studied and are very important issues for acoustic propagation. The internal wave effects on acoustic modal coupling has been implicated and discussed.

    Description: We report the discovery of X-rays from both components of Cepheus A, East and West, with the XMM-Newton observatory. HH 168 joins the ranks of other energetic Herbig-Haro objects that are sources of T ≥ 10(6) K X-ray emission. The effective temperature of HH 168 is T = 5.8(-2.3)(+3.5) x 10(6) K, and its unabsorbed luminosity is 1: 1; 10(29) ergs s(-1), making it hotter and less luminous than other representatives of its class. We also detect prominent X-ray emission from the complex of compact radio sources believed to be the power sources for Cep A. We call this source HWX, and it is distinguished by its hard X-ray spectrum, T = 1.2(-0.5)(+1.2) 10(8) K, and its complex spatial distribution. It may arise from one or more protostars associated with the radio complex, the outflows, or a combination of the two. We detect 102 X-ray sources, many presumed to be pre-main-sequence stars on the basis of the reddening of their optical and IR counterparts.

    Description: We present recent high time resolution observations from an oblique (43 deg) shock crossing from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. Short-duration bursts between 10 and 100 ms of ion acoustic waves are observed in this event alongside a persistent reflected ion population. High time resolution (150 ms) particle measurements show strongly varying ion distributions between successive measurements, implying that they are bursty and impulsive by nature. Such signatures are consistent with ion bursts that are impulsively reflected at various points within the shock. We find that, after instability analysis using a Fried-Conte dispersion solver, the insertion of dispersive ion bursts into an already stable ion distribution can lead to wave growth in the ion acoustic mode for short durations of time. We find that impulsively reflected ions are a plausible mechanism for ion acoustic wave growth in the terrestrial bow shock and, furthermore, suggest that wave growth can lead to a small but measurable momentum exchange between the solar wind ions and the reflected population.
