    Description: On May 25, 1996 the Interball Tail spacecraft was moving through the northern hemisphere of the high-latitude magnetosphere on its outbound trajectory. It successively crossed lobe field lines followed by the high latitude magnetopause, then entering the magnetoshealth proper near the cusp region covering magnetic local time from 8h20m to 9h30m at magnetic latitudes of about 770. IMF observed by WIND was northward during the time interval of interest and favorable for reconnection at high latitude magnetopause. The well-defined De Hoffmann Teller frame and stress balance indicate that the magnetopause was a rotational discontinuity with ongoing reconnection. After the magnetopause crossing, the spacecraft observed decelerated magnetoshealth flow in the sub-Alvinic regime. A gradually increasing of the flow velocity is observed and the plasma flow regime changed from sub-Alfvnic through Alfinic to super-Alfvnic one. We explain these results by direct passing of the Interball Tail through the secondary stagnation point, which has been predicted by theoretical and semiempirical models of the high latitude magnetopause.

    Description: Previous observations of the luminous Seyfert galaxy 1H 0419-577 have found its X-ray spectrum to range from that of a typical Seyfert 1 with 2-10 keV power law index Gamma approx. 1.9 to a much flatter power law of Gamma approx. 1.5 or less. We report here a new XMM-Newton observation which allows the low state spectrum to be studied in much greater detail than hitherto. We find a very hard spectrum (Gamma approx. 1.0) which exhibits broad features that can be modelled with the addition of an extreme relativistic Fe K emission line or with partial covering of the underlying continuum by a substantial column density of near-neutral gas. Both the EPIC and RGS data show evidence for strong line emission of OVII and OVIII requiring an extended region of low density photoionised gas in 1H 0419- 577. Comparison with an earlier XMM-Newton observation when 1H 0419-577 was X-ray bright indicates the dominant spectral variability occurs via a steep power law component.

    Description: We report on XMM-Newton spectroscopic observations of the luminous, radio-quiet quasar PDS 456. The hard X-ray spectrum of PDS 456 shows a deep absorption trough (constituting 50% of the continuum) at energies above 7 keV in the quasar rest frame, which can be attributed to a series of blue-shifted K-shell absorption edges due to highly ionized iron. The higher resolution soft X-ray grating RGS spectrum exhibits a broad absorption line feature near 1 keV, which can be modeled by a blend of L-shell transitions from highly ionized iron (Fe XVII - XXIV). An extreme outflow velocity of approx. 50000 km/s is required to model the K and L shell iron absorption present in the XMM-Newton data. Overall, a large column density (N(sub H) = 5 x 10(exp 23)/sq cm) of highly ionized gas (log xi = 2.5) is required in PDS 456. A large mass outflow rate of approx. 10 solar mass/year (assuming a conservative outflow covering factor of 0.1 steradian) is derived, which is of the same order as the overall mass accretion rate in PDS 456. This represents a substantial fraction (approx. 10%) of the quasar energy budget, whilst the large column and outflow velocity place PDS 456 towards the extreme end of the broad absorption line quasar population.

    Description: We have undertaken an imaging survey of 34 nearby galaxies in far-ultraviolet(FUV, [sim]1500 u and optical (UBVRI) passbands to characterize galaxy morphology as a function of wavelength. This sample, which includes a range of classical Hubble types from elliptical to irregular, with emphasis on spirals at low inclination angle, provides a valuable database for comparison with images of high-z galaxies whose FUV light is redshifted into the optical and near-infrared bands.

    Description: The discovery of presolar grains in meteorites is one of the most exciting recent developments in meteoritics. Six types of presolar grain have been discovered: diamond, Sic, graphite, Si3N4, Al2O3 and MgAl2O4. These grains have been identified as presolar because their isotopic compositions are very different from those of Solar System materials. Comparison of their isotopic compositions with astronomical observations and theoretical models indicates most of the grains formed in the envelopes of highly evolved stars. They are, therefore, a new source of information with which to test astrophysical models of the evolution of these stars. In fact, because several elements can often be measured in the same grain, including elements that are not measurable spectroscopically in stars, the grain data provide some very stringent constraints for these models. Our primary goal is to create large, unbiased, multi-isotope databases of single presolar Sic, Si,N,, oxide and graphite grains in meteorites, as well as any new presolar grain types that are identified in the future. These will be used to: (i) test stellar and nucleosynthetic models, (ii) constrain the galactic chemical evolution (GCE) paths of the isotopes of Si, Ti, O and Mg, (iii) establish how many stellar sources contributed to the Solar System, (iv) constrain relative dust production rates of various stellar types and (v) assess how representative of galactic dust production the record in meteorites is. The primary tool for this project is a highly automated grain analysis system on the Carnegie 6f ion probe.

    Description: We present a generalised formalism for treating the porosity-associated reduction in continuum opacity that occurs when individual clumps in a stochastic medium become optically thick. As in previous work, we concentrate on developing bridging laws between the limits of optically thin and thick clumps. We consider geometries resulting in either isotropic or anisotropic effective opacity, and, in addition to an idealised model in which all clumps have the same local overdensity and scale, we also treat an ensemble of clumps with optical depths set by Markovian statistics. This formalism is then applied to the specific case of bound-free absorption of X- rays in hot star winds, a process not directly affected by clumping in the optically thin limit. We find that the Markov model gives surprisingly similar results to those found previously for the single clump model, suggesting that porous opacity is not very sensitive to details of the assumed clump distribution function. Further, an anisotropic effective opacity favours escape of X-rays emitted in the tangential direction (the venetian blind effect), resulting in a bump of higher flux close to line centre as compared to profiles computed from isotropic porosity models. We demonstrate how this characteristic line shape may be used to diagnose the clump geometry, and we confirm previous results that for optically thick clumping to significantly influence X-ray line profiles, very large porosity lengths, defined as the mean free path between clumps, are required. Moreover, we present the first X-ray line profiles computed directly from line-driven instability simulations using a 3-D patch method, and find that porosity effects from such models also are very small. This further supports the view that porosity has, at most, a marginal effect on X-ray line diagnostics in O stars, and therefore that these diagnostics do indeed provide a good clumping insensitive method for deriving O star mass-loss rates.

    Description: Preliminary results are presented from the gamma-optical campaign of January-February 1999 on 3C 279. During this period we obtained good optical sampling of the source, the best ever for a gamma-bright OVV quasar. Its large and fast variations have been compared with the gamma-ray fluxes obtained simultaneously by Energy Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET), on Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). Despite rather poor counting statistics in the gamma-ray data, a fair correlation is found, with the gamma variations following those in the optical by 3-4 days. This is the first time such a significant day-scale correlation has been observed between the optical and gamma emissions from a OVV quasar. Its implications are currently under study.

    Description: We analyze plasma structures within the low latitude boundary layer (LLBL) observed by the lnterball Tail spacecraft under southward interplanetary magnetic field. Ion velocity distributions observed in the LLBL under these conditions fall into three categories: (a) D-shaped distributions, (b) ion velocity distributions consisting of two counterstreaming magnetosheath-type, and (c) distributions with three components where one of them has nearly zero velocity parallel to magnetic field (VlI), while the other two are counter-streaming components. D-shaped ion velocity distributions (a) correspond to magnetosheath plasma injections into reconnected flux tubes, as influenced by spacecraft location relative to the reconnection site. Simultaneous counter-streaming injections (b) suggest multiple reconnections. Three-component ion velocity distributions (c) and theii evolution with decreasing number density in the LLBL are consistent v behavior expected on long spiral flux tube islands at the magnetopaus as has been proposed and found to occur in magnetopause simulatior We interpret these distributions as a natural consequence of the formation of spiral magnetic flux tubes consisting of a mixture of alternating segments originating from the magnetosheath and magnetospheric plasmas. We suggest that multiple reconnections pla! an important role in the formation of the LLBL.
