    Notes: Several NMR experiments can provide estimates of the scale of spatial inhomogeneity in solid materials in the range of nanometers to microns. The effects underlying these experiments their interpretation, and models used in their interpretation are discussed and illustrated with applications to polymers. Examples chosen from the literature include semicrystalline polymers (polyethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polychlorotrifluoroethylene), filled elastomers (carbon-filled butadiene), copolymers (styrene: butadiene, dimethylsiloxane: bisphenol-A polycarbonate, polyurethane) and blends (polymethylmethacrylate-polystyreneacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene fluoride-polymethylmethacrylate). Comparison of examples directs attention to the similarity in anisotropic motional behavior of highly constrained interfacial material in semicrystalline and filled polymers. While no one experiment is applicable to all dimensions, or all systems, NMR has proven especially useful for dimensions in the range of tens of nanometers, where other techniques are often less revealing.

    Description: We have observed the polarized light at 2 microns in the center of NGC 1068 with HST (Hubble Space Telescope) NICMOS (Near Infrared Camera Multi Object Spectrometer) Camera 2. The nucleus is dominated by a bright, unresolved source, polarized at a level of 6.0 +/- 1.2% with a position angle of 122 degrees +/- 1.5 degrees. There are two polarized lobes extending tip to 8" northeast and southwest of the nucleus. The polarized flux in both lobes is quite clumpy, with the maximum polarization occurring in the southwest lobe at a level of 17% when smoothed to 0.23" resolution. The perpendiculars to the polarization vectors in these two lobes point back to the intense unresolved nuclear source to within one 0.076" Camera 2 pixel, thereby confirming that this source is the origin of the scattered light and therefore the probable AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei) central engine. Whereas the polarization of the nucleus is probably caused by dichroic absorption, the polarization in the lobes is almost certainly caused by scattering, with very little contribution from dichroic absorption. Features in the polarized lobes include a gap at a distance of about 1" from the nucleus toward the southwest lobe and a "knot" of emission about 5" northwest of the nucleus. Both features had been discussed by groundbased observers, but they are much better defined with the high spatial resolution of NICMOS. The northeast knot may be the side of a molecular cloud that is facing the nucleus, which cloud may be preventing the expansion of the northeast radio lobe at the head of the radio synchrotron-radiation-emitting jet. We also report the presence of two ghosts in the Camera 2 polarizers.

    Description: We report on a Spitzer/IRS (mid-infrared), RXTE /PCA+HEXTE (X-ray), and Ryle (radio) simultaneous multi-wavelength study of the micro quasar Cygnus X-I, which aimed at an investigation of the origin of its mid-infrared emission. Compact jets were present in two out of three observations, and we show that they strongly contribute to the mid-infrared continuum. During the first observation, we detect the spectral break - where the transition from the optically thick to the optically thin regime takes place - at about 2.9 x 10(exp 13) Hz. We then show that the jet's optically thin synchrotron emission accounts for the Cygnus X-1's emission beyond 400 keY, although it cannot alone explain its 3-200 keV continuum. A compact jet was also present during the second observation, but we do not detect the break, since it has likely shifted to higher frequencies. In contrast, the compact jet was absent during the last observation, and we show that the 5-30 micron mid-infrared continuum of Cygnus X-I stems from the blue supergiant companion star HD 226868. Indeed, the emission can then be understood as the combination of the photospheric Raleigh-Jeans tail and the bremsstrahlung from the expanding stellar wind. Moreover, the stellar wind is found to be clumpy, with a filling factor f(sub infinity) approx.= 0.09-0.10. Its bremsstrahlung emission is likely anti-correlated to the soft X-ray emission, suggesting an anticorrelation between the mass-loss and mass-accretion rates. Nevertheless, we do not detect any mid-infrared spectroscopic evidence of interaction between the jets and the Cygnus X-1's environment and/or companion star's stellar wind.

    Description: Spatially resolved scattered-light images of circumstellar debris in exoplanetary systems constrain the physical properties and orbits of the dust particles in these systems. They also inform on co-orbiting (but unseen) planets, the systemic architectures, and forces perturbing the starlight-scattering circumstellar material. Using HST/STIS broadband optical coronagraphy, we have completed the observational phase of a program to study the spatial distribution of dust in a sample of ten circumstellar debris systems, and one "mature" protoplanetrary disk all with HST pedigree, using PSF-subtracted multi-roll coronagraphy. These observations probe stellocentric distances greater than or equal to 5 AU for the nearest systems, and simultaneously resolve disk substructures well beyond corresponding to the giant planet and Kuiper belt regions within our own Solar System. They also disclose diffuse very low-surface brightness dust at larger stellocentric distances. Herein we present new results inclusive of fainter disks such as HD92945 (F (sub disk) /F (sub star) = 5x10 (sup -5) confirming, and better revealing, the existence of a narrow inner debris ring within a larger diffuse dust disk. Other disks with ring-like sub-structures and significant asymmetries and complex morphologies include: HD181327 for which we posit a spray of ejecta from a recent massive collision in an exo-Kuiper belt; HD61005 suggested to be interacting with the local ISM; HD15115 and HD32297, discussed also in the context of putative environmental interactions. These disks, and HD15745, suggest that debris system evolution cannot be treated in isolation. For AU Mic's edge-on disk we find out-of-plane surface brightness asymmetries at greater than or equal to 5 AU that may implicate the existence of one or more planetary perturbers. Time resolved images of the MP Mus proto-planetary disk provide spatially resolved temporal variability in the disk illumination. These and other new images from our HST/STIS GO/12228 program enable direct inter-comparison of the architectures of these exoplanetary debris systems in the context of our own Solar System.
