    Beschreibung: Considering that habitat complexity is directly linked to the maintenance of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems, we carried out an field experiment to study the community structure of periphytic algae (richness, biomass, density and diversity) in artificial substrates with different degrees of complexity. We expected that greater structural complexity elevates the attributes of the periphytic community. We also evaluated whether the differences in species composition between substrates were the result of species turnover and/or nestedness. The experiment was carried out in situ, in a lagoon of the Upper Paraná River floodplain. Artificial macrophytes with different complexities were randomly incubated near a bank of natural macrophytes and removed after colonization of the periphyton for qualitative and quantitative analysis. The richness and diversity of species for both substrates did not differ. However, the biomass (chl a) and density of species differed between substrate types, with high biomass and density in the complex substrates. This result shows that although the source of propagules is the same, complex substrates provide space for a greater number of organisms, and that more simplified substrates alter the abundance of species. Our results also indicated that both nestedness and turnover affected the community structure of periphytic algae. Nestedness differed between simple and complex structures only when species abundance was considered; distinctly, species turnover was significantly different only when species occurrence was considered. Thus, we highlight the importance of habitat complexity in determining patterns of beta diversity (turnover and nestedness) allied to species abundance data for structuring the periphytic community.
    Beschreibung: Considerando que a complexidade de habitat está diretamente ligada à manutenção da biodiversidade em ecossistemas aquáticos, realizou-se um experimento em campo para estudar a estrutura da comunidade de algas perifíticas (riqueza, biomasssa, densidade e diversidade) em substratos artificiais com diferentes graus de complexidades. Esperavamos que uma maior complexidade estrutural elevava os atributos da comunidade perifítica e também, se as diferenças na composição de espécies entre substratos foram o resultado do turnover de espécies e/ou aninhamento. O experimento foi realizado in situ em uma lagoa da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. Macrófitas artificiais com diferentes complexidades foram incubadas de forma aleatória, próximas à um banco de macrófitas naturais, e retiradas após a colonização do perifíton para análise qualitativa e quantitativa. A riqueza e diversidade de espécies para ambos os substratos não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os distintos tipos de substratos. Porém, a biomassa (chl a) e densidade de espécies diferiram, com maior biomassa e densidade no substrato complexo. O resultado evidencia que, embora a fonte de propágulos seja a mesma, substratos complexos disponibilizam espaço para um maior número de organismos, e que substratos mais simplificados alteram a abundância de espécies de um sistema. Os dados obtidos indicaram que tanto o aninhamento quanto o turnover afetaram a estrutura da comunidade de algas perifíticas. O aninhamento diferiu entre estruturas simples e complexas somente quando a abundância de espécies foi considerada. Ao contrário, a substituição de espécies foi significativamente diferente somente quando consideramos a ocorrência de espécies. Para tanto, buscamos ressaltar a importância da complexidade de habitats em determinar padrões da diversidade beta (turnover e aninhamento) aliados aos dados de abundância de espécies para estruturação da comunidade perifítica.
