    Description: There are increasing requirements for impact assessment by development partners in order to increase the accountability and effectiveness of research and development projects. Impact assessment research has been dominated by conventional economic methods. This context challenges agricultural research organizations to develop and apply alternative impact assessment methods incorporating economic, social, and environmental impact components. In this study, we use the Tradeoff Analysis for Multi-Dimensional Impact Assessment (TOA-MD) model to evaluate the impact of integrated aquaculture-agriculture (IAA) adoption in Malawi. The study demonstrated that with a minimal data set, the TOA-MD model can be applied to predict and assess the adoption rates of new technologies and practices as well as their economic and non-economic impacts.

    Description: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has emerged as a global fish producer, owing to the rapid growth of aquaculture in Southeast Asia and its large offshore fishing fleet. Fish is a regional commodity that is traded globally, and this region is at the frontline of the global trend toward meeting seafood demand by 2050. Fisheries and aquaculture are increasingly becoming a primary source of protein and micronutrients, foreign exchange, livelihoods and well-being for the population in the region. Therefore, it is imperative for ASEAN decision-makers to enhance policies nationally and regionally to maximize the synergies between socioeconomic development and protecting natural resources and the environment in the region. This paper presents a baseline (business-as-usual) projection of fish supply, net trade, consumption and nutrition in the ASEAN region to 2050.

    Description: Aquaculture and capture fisheries in Vietnam have been increasing fast in the last decade, especially aquaculture growth rate is 12% for the 1999 – 2003 period, contributing a significant part into the hunger eradication and poverty reduction1. Vietnam is to be ranked into one of the countries potential to produce the aquatic economic in the world, and the fact is that, after 40 years of establishing, the fisheries sector has made remarkable contributions to the country. By the list, at the moment the aquatic products make up about 4 - 5% of GDP and create job opportunities for over 3 three millionemployees (VASEP, 2004), in which the largest contribution is from shrimp farming.     Description: The Mekong River delta of Vietnam supports a thriving aquaculture industry but is exposed to the impacts of climate change. In particular, sea level rise and attendant increased flooding (both coastal and riverine) and coastal salinity intrusion threaten the long-term viability of this important industry. This working paper summarizes an analysis of the economics of aquaculture adaptation in the delta, focusing on the grow-out of two exported aquaculture species—the freshwater striped catfish and the brackish-water tiger shrimp. The analysis was conducted for four pond-based production systems: catfish in the inland and coastal provinces and improved extensive and semi-intensive/intensive shrimp culture.

    Description: Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production sector globally, with production projected to double within the next 15–20 years. Future growth of aquaculture is essential to providing sustainable supplies of fish in national, regional and global fish food systems; creating jobs; and maintaining fish at affordable levels for resource-poor consumers. To ensure that the anticipated growth of aquaculture remains both economically and ecologically sustainable, we need to better understand the likely patterns of growth, as well as the opportunities and challenges, that these trends present. This knowledge will enable us to better prioritize investments that will help ensure the sustainable development of the sector. In Indonesia, WorldFish and partners have applied a unique methodology to evaluate growth trajectories for aquaculture under various scenarios, as well as the opportunities and challenges these represent. Indonesia is currently the fourth largest aquaculture producer globally, and the sector needs to grow to meet future fish demand. The study overlapped economic and environmental models with quantitative and participatory approaches to understand the future of aquaculture in Indonesia. Such analyses, while not definitive, have provided new understanding of the future supply and demand for seafood in Indonesia stretching to 2030. The learning from this research provides a foundation for future interventions in Indonesian fish food systems, as well as a suite of methodologies that can be applied more widely for insightful analyses of aquaculture growth trajectories in other countries or regions.

    Description: This study examines the effect of half and quarter separation methods by fragmentation for culture sea anemone Stichodactyla haddoni (with mouth diameter 28.97±1.37 cm, foot diameter 9.39±0.44 cm, weight 1466.78 ± 192.13g) after 90 days in recirculating aquaculture systems. Research using a completely randomized design with three treatments: control, 1 to 2 individuals and 1 to 4 individuals. Each treatment repeated three replications. The results show that the survival was high, with 88.89±11.111% in control and 88.89 ±5.556% in the anemones cut in half, and 72.22±2,778 % cut in quarters (p〉0.05). There was a difference in growth in mouth diameter (p〈0.05) but no difference in growth in foot diameter and wet weight (p〉0.05). Anemones were cut in half larger, less stressed, and grow faster than the quartered individuals, but the number of anemones from the quaternary separation method was higher. Experiments show that both fragmentation methods are highly effective and can be used to breed Stichodactyla haddoni anemone.

    Description: Iron is a trace element involved in many physiological and biochemical processes of aquatic animals and is necessary for the production and normal functioning of hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes, and many other enzyme systems, maintains the structural integrity of the epithelium and thus suppresses pathogens, iron deficiency induces microcytic anemia in certain fish species, iron-free content in mucus membranes and in other tissues that are one of the first glands to protect the host against infection, iron deficiency can decrease host resistance so that iron supplementation increases host resistance disease. This report not only reviews the iron requirement in fish and crustaceans farming but also its effect on the health status.
