Notes: Micro-Raman spectra were obtained with three different films and also with amorphous carbon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples for comparison. The spectra of the crystallites are similar, differing mainly in frequency and line width of the major line with the position varying from 1566 to 1578 cm-1. The corresponding line for the pyrolytic graphite is at 1581 cm-1. Another difference is related to the strength of two broad background features at ca. 1350 and 1595 cm-1, evidently due to a certain amount of amorphous carbon within the spot area. In general, the spectra of the crystallites are similar to that of C70 films reported earlier.

Notes: Pressure-induced phase changes in SrMoO4 were investigated by high-pressure Raman spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell. The scheelite-type SrMoO4 transforms in to a monoclinic lattice near 13 GPa and retains this structure up to 37 GPa, the limit of pressure tested. There is no pressure-induced amorphization in this simple molybdate up to this pressure, as in the case of structurally complex molybdate systems. The optical absorption characteristics of SrMoO4 change considerably with pressure, the sample turning progressively deep orange-brown with increase in pressure. This change is connected with the lowering of the d-state of molybdenum in the MoO4 ion with increase in pressure.

Notes: A simple optical low-temperature icing cell was fabricated to obtain the in situ Raman spectra of ice layers forming on metallic substrates. The icing cell is optically coupled to a micro Raman multi-channel spectrometer. The Raman spectra of the initial ice layers show characteristics of a disordered phase resembling low-density amorphous ice. The crystalline phase develops gradually as the thickness of the ice layer increases. The disorder in the initial ice layer may be caused primarily by the rapid thermal cooling, and appears to be independent of the type of metal substrate.

Notes: The 13C NMR spectra of 19 differently substituted pyrano- and dihydropyrano-1,3-diphenylprop-2-enones were recorded and the results are discussed. The data will be useful in the identification of new and natural chalcones.
