Notes: In this paper we report our studies of reduction phenomena in a high performance liquid chromatography/particle beam interface-mass spectrometer system (HPLC/PB-MS). It is shown that reduction takes place in the ion source of the mass spectrometer, but that the particle beam interface plays an important role in the reduction process since the HPLC mobile phase is involved in the reduction. HPLC flow rate and desolvation-chamber temperature have significant effects on the reduction extent, while ion-source temperature has only a minor effect. All the nitro compounds and sulfoxides tested in this work showed reduction in the system. There was no observed reduction for sulfones. 1,4-Naphthaquinone showed significant reduction, while no reduction was observed for anthraqunone.

Notes: In this Communication we report, for the first time, a direct method for the determination of benomyl (methyl [1-(butylcarbamoyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]carbamate) in wettable powder formulations by fast-atom bombard-ment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS). Solutions of desired concentrations of benomyl were prepared in 5 M hydrochloric acid. The matrix compound, glycerol, was added at 10% (v/v) to these solutions for obtaining FAB mass spectra. The results of the analysis of wettable powder samples, carried out by FAB-MS, compared well (p 〉 0.05) with those obtained by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography.

Notes: A method based on XRF was used for the determination of the total concentration of potassium and calcium, in the presence of each other and irrespective of the nature of their chemical compounds, in the roots and leaves of spinach and radish plants. The enhancement of potassium K x-rays due to K x-rays of calcium present in the samples was avoided by selective excitation of the sample with external conversion calcium K x-rays in a compact triaxial double reflection geometry set-up. The absorption of calcium and potassium K x-rays in the samples was taken care of in terms of counts under K x-ray peaks only. The overlapping of the calcium K x-ray photopeak with the potassium K x-ray photopeak due to the limited resolution of the Si(Li) spectrometer was estimated and counts under the calcium K x-ray photopeak were corrected accordingly. The results for whole plants of spinach and radish agreed with those normally quoted in nutrition books.

Notes: A method is described for the quantitative analysis of binary mixtures using a simple x-ray fluorescence technique. It requires neither special preparation of thin samples nor corrections for absorption and enhancement effects. Enhancement effects are avoided using selective excitation and absorption is estimated in terms of intensities of the measured x-rays. Linear calibrations requiring the use of only two standards are obtained. The application of the method is illustrated with six different binary mixtures.

Notes: Cross-sections for the production of Ll, Lα, Lβ and Lγ x-rays in 22 elements (57 ≤ Z ≤ 92) by photons of 13 different energies in the range 8-50 ke V are reported. The experimental values of the cross-sections were determined by measuring the absolute yield of L subshell x-rays emitted from a target of a given element and thickness when it was bombarded with a known flux of photons of given energy. The theoretical values of the cross-sections were calculated from the theoretical/semi-empirical values of subshell photoionization cross-sections, fluorescence yields, Coster-Kronig transition probabilities, intra-shell transition probabilities and radiative decay rates. The present and previous measured and calculated values of the cross-sections are tabulated to bring out the existing status of L x-ray production cross-sections.

Notes: The cross-sections of M x-ray emission following photoionization of L and M shell electrons in Au, Pb, Th and U by 59.57 ke V gamma rays were measured. The experimental values of cross-sections were found to be higher than those calculated from the theoretical values of L and M shell photoionization cross-sections, the Li subshell to M shell vacancy transfer probabilities and M shell average fluorescence yields. The transfer of vacancies from the Li subshell to the M shell was found to play a significant role in M x-ray emission. The present status of the experimental and calculated values of the cross-sections is discussed.

Notes: Raman scattering from single crystals of ammonium sulphamate have been recorded in the region 30-3400 cm-1 with He-Cd laser excitation. The libratory and translatory modes observed in all the six polarizations were assigned. The assignment of internal modes of ammonium ion indicates minimum distortion of the ion from the tetrahedral symmetry. The presence of medium hydrogen bonding and the range of correlation field splitting are discussed.

Notes: Raman spectra of a single crystal of calcium sulphamate and polycrystalline barium sulphamate have been recorded at room temperature. Infrared spectra of polycrystalline calcium and barium sulphamates for the region 20-4000 cm-1 are also presented. The assignments made are supported by potential energy distribution calculations. The data show that there is no water of hydration in barium sulphamate. The N-S torsional mode is observed in both the compounds. This has not been found in other sulphamates of this family. The results indicate very weak hydrogen bonding in these crystals.

Notes: Room temperature polarized Raman spectra of potassium sulphamate single crystals have been investigated in the region 30-3400 cm-1 using laser excitation. All lattice modes, excepting two, have been observed. The reassignment of the internal modes of (NH2SO3)- ion has been verified by computing the potential energy distribution. The observed correlation field splitting in KNH2SO3 crystal is very small, of the order of 5-10 cm-1.
