Notes: Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) has been used to determine the amount of styrene-butadiene latex on the surface of coated papers and to predict the composition of the polymer. Spectrum recording was performed on the sample in its usual form without any modification. For quantitative analysis, partial least squares (PLS) regression, principal component regression (PCR) and multi-linear regression (MLR) were used to calculate models for prediction. The best result is obtained with PLS.We analysed two series of paper samples. The first analysis concerns the measurement of the quantity of latex of a constant quality on the coating surface. For 15 samples the concentration varied between 5 and 25 parts (grams per 100g of mineral pigments). We compared the predictive results at various resolutions. We obtained a relative error of 0.15 parts in latex at 4 cm-1 resolution. The second analysis concerns the measurement of the styrene/butadiene ratio in various types of latex. We obtained a relative error of 0.156 parts for styrene determination and 0.161 parts for butadiene determination.

Notes: Hindered rotation in two o-substituted N,N-dimethylthiobenzamides was investigated by variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy. For one compound, the enthalpies and entropies of activation for (i) thioamide group rotation around the Ar—C bond and (ii) dimethylamino group rotation around the C—N bond were obtained by full line shape analysis; a possible coupling between the two processes is discussed. A new simple method has also been applied to the analysis of dimethylamino exchange and results are in complete agreement with the full line shape analysis with somewhat better precision.

Notes: The Raman spectra of five organosilatranes (R = H, CH3, (CH2)3NH2, OC2H5 and F) are reported. The normal modes of the cage are presented and the assignment of the Si-N stretching mode is discussed on the basis of C3ν symmetry for the silatrane skeleton.

Notes: The Raman spectrum of 1-methylsilatrane hydrochloride has been recorded. The disappearance of the 354 cm-1 band, found in the spectrum of 1-methylsilatrane, is in agreement with the assignment of this vibration to the Si—N stretching mode on the basis of a previous a priori normal coordinate treatment.

Notes: Infrared and Raman spectra of octamethylcyclotetrasilazane [(CH3)2SiNH]4 are reported for the compound in the gaseous and liquid states and for solutions in CCl4. 21 Raman bands have been observed for the first time. They are assigned on the basis of group frequencies. Their temperature dependence does not reveal any favoured conformation. Raman spectra of both polycrystalline powders and single crystals are well explained if the existence of chair and boat forms is assumed, according to X-ray results.

Notes: The binding of trimethylphosphine to the axial position of the haeme iron in modified cytochrome c by alkylation of methionine was studied by NMR spectroscopy. Electron self-exchange was determined by spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) measurement. The rate is 7.5 × 103 1 mol-1 s-1 at 25°C in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). Two-dimensional transfer spectroscopy was used to locate haeme methyl resonances in both iron(II) and iron(III) complexes of modified cytochrome c.
