Notes: By use of deuterium labelling it is shown that the radical cation of 1,3-butadiene reacts with vinyl methyl (or ethyl) ether in the gas phase through a [2+4] cycloaddition reaction. This leads to an excited collision complex of ionized 4-methoxy- (or ethoxy) cyclohexene, which expels mthanol (or ethanol) through a 1,3 elimination, as does 4-methoxycyclohexene itself upon electron impact. The spectrum of daughter ions produced by collision induced decomposition of the resulting ion with m/e 80 has been compared with spectra produced by the collision induced decompositions of the m/e 80 ions given by 1,3-cyclohexadiene, 1,4-cyclohexadiene, 1,3,5-hexatriene and the [M-MeOH]\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\mathop +\limits_\cdot$\end{document} ion from 4-methoxycyclohexene.

Notes: A method for the location of the positions of carbon-carbon double bonds using high pressure mass spectrometry is proposed. A known olefinic molecular ion reacts with a second, unknown olefin to form a four-centre complex, which fragments with retention of the structural identity of methylene and substituted methylene groups to eliminate a new olefin molecule and to form an unsaturated ion from which the position of the double bond in the unknown olefin can be inferred. Vinyl methyl ether proved to be a convenient reagent gas and its molecular ion undergoes the required reaction with several classes of olefinic compound. Conjugated dienes and unsaturated compounds containing electronegative groups do not undergo this reaction.

Notes: The two-dimensional mass spectra (metastable mapping) of ten biogenic amines derived from the amino acid 2-phenylalanine are described. This technique permitted the identification of almost all the fragmentations of singly and doubly charged positive ions formed by electron impact and decomposing in the different parts of a reverse-geometry mass spectrometer. The results obtained are discussed in order to establish the main fragmentation pathways common to all the amines belonging to the general class of 2-phenylethylamines and to identify the fragmentations characteristic of each amine.

Notes: Raman and infrared spectra of a series of double chromates of the type Lnk(CrO4)2, with Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, were recorded and discussed with the aid of a factor group analysis. These substances constitute the first example showing the intercalation of v1 between v3 components in crystalline chromates. The spectroscopic results confirm again the structural differences between these chromates and PbCrO4 (synthetic crocoite), which was also investigated for comparison.

Notes: The infrared and Raman spectra of vanadyl(IV) tetraphenylporphyrin were recorded between 1600 and 200 cm-1. Assignment of most of the vibrational modes was done by comparison with other related compounds. The V—N and V=O metal - ligand vibrations could be clearly identified. Pre-resonance experiments were performed, using different radiation from an argon ion laser, in the energy range between the main electronic transitions of the complex [the Soret band and the (α + β) doublet]. Analysis of the excitation profiles suggests that all the enhanced bands contribute to both the A and B terms of Albrecht's equation.

Notes: 1H two-dimensional NMR experiments on nickel(II)-substituted azurin have been successfully applied. Despite the short relaxation times of the hyperfine-shifted resonances, the combined use of NOESY and COSY spectra allowed the assignment of 15 resonances belonging to the metal-coordinated residues Gly-45, His-46, His-117 and Met-121. Even in the case of the two broad and furthest downfield resonances, the NOESY spectra were successful in assigning these signals to the β-CH2 protons of Cys-112. The protons of the non-coordinated residues Met-13, Phe-15 and Trp-48 were also assigned via NOESY, COSY and TOCSY experiments.
