Notes: In the approach to the developement of a practical procedure for the evaluation of band broadening properties of gas capillary columns, the expression for the variance of a solute band is cast in a dimensionless form. This expression supplies the basis for a valid bench mark for column evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate the applicability of the method.

Notes: Orthoquinone diazides, which are widely used in microlithography, have attracted considerable attention, especially in terms of their application in the production of high-contrast resists. Previous electron impact mass spectrometric results have confirmed that the primary fragmentation process of these compounds is the elimination of N2 to form an indenoketene ion. This is analogous to the photodecomposition pathway which makes them effective in the lithographic process. Those results also revealed the occurrence of an alternative process, which involves a two-hydrogen reduction of the intermediate species formed prior to conversion to the ketene. The present study investigates the behaviour of the orthoquinone diazides when there is an abundance of protons available to form the reduction product. Several different types of diazonaphthalenone sulfonyl esters, ranging in complexity from the monosubstituted phenol esters to disubstituted dihydroxybenzophenones, were examined using fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. Although reduction was the primary process in the hydrogen-rich matrices, the extent of reduction was characteristic of the particular isomer as well as the matrix used.

Notes: The linearity of the relationship between σT,t2 and (1 + k)2 is studied with the view of using it for the evaluation of GC equipment. Based on appropriate analytical expressions it is concluded that in general this relationship is not linear and that practical procedures for column evaluation should be developed that take this non-linearity into account.

Notes: The real plate number concept is interpreted in terms of the fundamental properties of a chromatograph. It is shown that the linear relationship between the total peak width at half height, (b0.5)T, t, and k is only an approximation of the more general linear relationship between (b0.5)2T, t and (1 + k)2. In the case where the relationship between (b0.5)T, t and k approaches linearity, it is concluded, firstly, that b0 = a, i. e., b0 is a column property and independent of extra-column phenomena and, secondly, that nreal=ntheor. When the relationship becomes non-linear, b0 is determined partly by extra-column phenomena, but not in terms of a useful relationship. It is concluded that it is unnecessary to introduce the parameters a, b0 and nreal, since they all have counterparts in the established theory of chromatography. These counterparts prove to be equally useful in the practical analysis of chromatographic systems.

Notes: A detailed method for the routine preparation of glass capillary columns is presented. The method consists of coating a glass tube with quartz powder prior to pulling the tube into a capillary. The inner surface of the capillary consists of an even distribution of quartz particles fused to the walls. This surface has been found readily deactivated by standard procedures and ideal for the preparation of thick-film glass capillary columns. The method has been thoroughly tested in two independent laboratories to ensure that the procedures described are reproducible.

Notes: Basic expressions are derived for both the retention time and the effective separation factor in serially coupled GC columns. The retention time is determined by two main parameters. The first is the fractional time spent by an unretarded solute in each column which, in turn, is determined by the relative column lengths and flow velocities through each column. The second parameter is the relative mass distribution coefficient of a particular solute in each column; a variable that can be adjusted by changing the relative temperatures of the columns. The expression for the effective separation factor relates the measured separation factor for the series combination to the separation factors on the individual columns, the fractional time spent by an unretarded peak in each column, as well as the relative values of the mass distribution coefficients of a particular solute on the different columns.

Notes: Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been used to investigate the structure, surface reaction and enhancement mechanism of adsorbed molecules on metal surfaces. However, a major limitation has been having to choose the molecules with functional groups capable of adsorbing onto metal surfaces. We report here SERS of Ni(II) tetrasulphonate phthalocyanine (Ni(II)PCS) as a result of introducing cationic surfactants like CTAB or CTAC. Ni(II)PCS does not adsorb onto a silver surface by itself and consequently does not show any SERS effect. The cationic surfactants employed here have functional groups to adsorb onto a silver surface and simultaneously interact with anionic sulphonate groups of Ni(II)PCS. Surfactant-aided SERS would expand the range of SERS application to molecules which are not able to adsorb onto metal surfaces by themselves.

Notes: The protonation of acetone in water for a wide range of compositions of the binary mixture was studied by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Formation constants (K1 and K2) and 13C, 17O and 1H chemical shifts of the 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were evaluated. The correlation of the 1H chemical shift of uncombined water with its concentration, Δ0H2O = A + B In [H2O]eq, recently derived for the trimethyl phosphate-water system, was verified. A measure of the fraction of monomer species existing in the uncombined water at each composition was obtained. The results are discussed with respect to the structure of water.
