Notes: Nine Semifluorinated alkanes, F(CF2)n(CH2)mH, were analysed by electron ionization and electron-capture mass spectrometry. Both techniques showed the presence of H…F bridges between the zigzag hydrocarbon chain and the twisted fluorocarbon one. In particular, this interaction can explain the extensive sequential HF losses detected in electron-capture mass spectrometry. The low abundance of fragments corresponding to cleavage of a CF2-CH2 bond indicate a relatively high bond strength.

Notes: The 70 eV electron impact mass spectrometric behaviour of some fluorinated alcohols, i.e. 2-fluoroethanol, 2,2,2,-trifluoroethanol, 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropan-1-ol and 1.3-difluoropropan-2-ol, was studied in detail by means of mass-analysed ion kinetic energy Spectrometry, deuterium-labelling experiments and comparison with unfluorinated analogues. Composite metastable peaks related to HF losses were rationalized by invoking the presence of two concurrent decomposition pathways, the first consisting in a 1,2-elimination and the second requiring the implication of hydroxyl hydrogen. This last process and other decomposition routes suggest the presence of H. bridging between the hydroxyl oxygen atom and fluorine.

Notes: The triacylglycerol composition of olive oil samples has been determined by stereospecific analysis after partial hydrolysis with ethyl magnesium bromide, derivatization, preparative chiral HPLC, transesterification, and GC quantitation of fatty acid methyl esters. The data obtained for position sn-2 were compared with those from capillary GC analysis of monoacyl sn-2-glycerols after enzymatic lipolysis of triacylglycerols. The determination of triacylglycerols collected by silver ion HPLC and quantified (as fatty acid methyl esters) by GC, together with direct GC analysis on a polar column, have then furnished a comprehensive picture of the triacylglycerol content of olive oil.

Notes: The chemical analysis of honey tends to concentrate on factors related to its state of preservation, e.g. HMF, diastase activity, and water content. Although there is no characteristic of honey officially regarded as suitable for certification of its botanical origin, literature is available in which several of the “minor” components of honey, such as flavors, di- and trisaccharides, and free amino acids, have been used to certify the botanical origin of the product. In this paper, six kinds of honey from different botanical sources (acacia, citrus fruit, chestnut-tree, rhododendron, rosemary, and lime-tree) were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography, and the data obtained evaluated statistically to determine whether the amino acid profile could be used to verify the botanical source of the material. The results have shown that the presence of amino acids such as arginine, tryptophan, and cystine is characteristic of a particular kind of honey, and that others, such as proline, asparagine, lysine, and methionine, can be used for discrimination if quantitative data is available about the levels of the compounds present.Evaluation of optimum split ratio for amino acid determination, and problems concerning the derivatization process, are also discussed.

Notes: An on-line solvent (eluent) evaporator is used for reconcentrating a fraction from a first LC column before introduction into a second LC separation step, possibly involving another mobile phase. For pentane and pentane containing 10 % of dichloromethane, evaporation rates of 1 ml/min were achieved. On evaporating a volume of 6 ml, 2-ethylnaphthalene was retained to more than 75%. Separation of aliphatic and polyaromatic hydrocarbons in a linseed oil is shown as an application.
