Notes: The low-frequency Raman spectra of dehydrated faujasite-type zeolites using the dispersive technique, provides evidence for the translational motions of the extra-framework cations in addition to the framework vibrational motions.

Notes: A quantitative analysis is made of the problem of obtaining accurate polarization measurements in Raman microspectroscopy. The introduction of experimentally determined correction factors arising from the optical properties of the beam splitter allows the depolarization by the microscope objective to be studied separately. Correction curves are calculated for the various parameters which characterize the light-excitation path and the light-collection path. These parameters are functions of both the numerical aperture of the objective and the refractive index of the (isotropic) sample. The introduction of these parameters into the expressions for the depolarization ratios of various Raman and resonance Raman bands accounts well for the differences noted between the results of the present microprobe measurements and those obtained with conventional instruments. The values determined here are, within experimental error, in agreement with the calculated results over a large range of depolarization ratios.

Notes: Compounds of general formula MI3[M′III(SO4)3] exhibit a columnar structure and, at room temperature, belong to the C52h, C23i and C63v symmetry space groups with, respectively, M1=T1, M′III= In; MI=T1, M′III=Fe; and MI =Cs, M′III= Fe.The Raman spectra of powder samples have been recorded in the temperature range 77-600 K. These vibrational studies indicate the role played by the SO4 groups and MI cations in the phase transitions. All the compounds follow a space group phase sequence in accordance with the general point group relationship 2/m → 3 → 3m → 3m.
