Notizen: Cosmetic creams were analyzed for their content of jojoba wax and shea fat using anticircular HPTLC, a fast, precise, and reliable method. After optimization of the solvent system (petrol ether/diethyl ether) for the separation of jojoba wax and shea fat, the spots were visualized with phosphomolybdic acid by the “dip-in” technique, subsequently heated, and finally recorded by scanning with a densitometer at 546 nm. Results showed that one particular concentration range gives an optimum correlation between calibration curves and sample evaluations.

Notizen: A preparative anticircular chromatography (PACH) device was constructed to elucidate different applications of separation problems as well as to compare different sample collection techniques in this particular PLC mode. An anticircular PC apparatus had to be established which allowed the utilization of 20 X 20 cm thin-layer plates as well as sampling positioning at any given radius. Typical solvent migration times were 8-12 minutes and ca. 8-10 ml of solvent was needed for an entire 20 cm plate. It was shown that peak broadening effects due to diffusion during long migration could be avoided in the same way as for analytical anticircular PLC on 10 X 10 plates. On the other hand, longer migration distances allow increased resolution, in turn allowing higher sample loads, particularly in the case of trace compound enrichment. A full description of the apparatus is given, including the sampling device.Different sample collection techniques were tried and evaluated, including the through-flow technique by on-line center collection for plate washing as well as classical scraping-off of interesting zones. Further evaluation of the method included quantification and evaluation of consistency by UV/VIS scanning after spot-visualization. Several application examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the preparative anticircular PLC-system.

Beschreibung: Space mission requirements for the 70's have established a 50,000-hour-lifetime challenge for the mechanisms designer. This challenge may be met by two approaches: (1) development of new materials for wear-prone elements, and (2) design innovation of new electromechanical devices that do not include mechanical wear-prone components. Present state-of-the-art materials require restricted operation regarding load, speed, and power for gears, bearings, and brush-slipring components. These restrictions are discussed, and methods of improvement are suggested. The design-innovations approach is discussed and is illustrated by the design of an experimental magnetically suspended motor.

Beschreibung: This article, the second of a two part paper, describes the general design requirements for a flywheel energy storage system. A new superflywheel energy storage system, using a spokeless, magnetically suspended, composite material pierced disk rotor is proposed. The new system is configured around a permanent magnet ('flux biased') magnetic suspension system with active control in the radial direction and passive control in the axial direction. The storage ring is used as a moving rotor and electronic commutation of stationary armature coils is proposed. There is no mechanical contact with the rotating ring and long life and low run down losses are projected. A discussion of major components for a 10 kwh system is presented.

Beschreibung: In contrast to all existing reaction wheel implementations, an order of magnitude increase in speed can be obtained efficiently if power to the actuators can be recovered. This allows a combined attitude control-energy storage system to be developed with structure mounted reaction wheels. The feasibility of combining reaction wheels with energy storage wwheels is demonstrated. The power required for control torques is a function of wheel speed but this energy is not dissipated; it is stored in the wheel. The I(2)R loss resulting from a given torque is shown to be constant, independent of the design speed of the motor. What remains, in order to efficiently use high speed wheels (essential for energy storage) for control purposes, is to reduce rotational losses to acceptable levels. Progress was made in permanent magnet motor design for high speed operation. Variable field motors offer more control flexibility and efficiency over a broader speed range.

Beschreibung: Advanced components are the fundamental building blocks of advanced systems and spacecraft. Non-contacting elements, including magnetic bearings, brushless and ironless armature motors, rotary transformers and encoders, are discussed. Most of the information presented in this paper has been generated from a continuing program of component development. The aim of this paper is to identify some of the important design features and provide a perspective on the state of development reached to date.

Beschreibung: Active feedback applied to bearings windings compensate for unbalanced forces. Helical-screw rotation compresses and transports gas charges, which subject shafts to forces tend to displace them from their equilibrium positions. Magnetic bearings restore shafts to equilibrium, lowering friction and increasing efficiency.

Beschreibung: Magnetic bearing for limited rotation devices requires no feedback control system to sense and correct shaft position. Passive Magnetic Torsion Bearing requires no power supply and has no rubbing parts. Torsion wire restrains against axial instability. Magnetic flux geometry chosen to assure lateral stability with radial restoring force that maintains alignment.
