Notes: Using a parametrie representation, it was proved in 19591 that the static and kinematic approaches to the plastic collapse problem are dual linear programming problems. In this paper, the generalized parameters used previously are given physical meaning and shown to be readily programmed for computer application. One important advantage of the method is that the equations can be written in general terms such that no assumptions regarding the structural from need to be built into the program. The application is extended to the more general problem of automatic plastic design and it is shown that the inclusion of a serviceability constraint (e.g. no plastic hinges at a given load factor) is trivial in this formulation. The difficult problem of several loading cases is shown to be readily, treated by designing for a given load factor for shakedown rather than plastic collapse. Thought this latter facility, by its dependence on elastic behavior, requires iteration of the stiffness of the structure, repaid convergence appears to be generally obtained. Finally a method is suggested whereby an adequate allowance for frame instability may be made without destroying the linearity of the equations. Thought the equations, as developed, have application to steel framed structures in mind, the extension to the limit design of reinforced concrete structures appears to present no addition complications.

Notes: In the stressed-skin analysis of metal structures it is vital to have a simple yet accurate treatment of the shear deformation of profiled metal sheeting. A suitable theory is developed in this paper for the two important cases of sheeting fastened to the supporting structure through every and alternate troughs of the corrugations. Various practical factors are taken into account. The results of an extensive series of numerical investigations are presented as a simple equation and a set of tables.

Notes: The eigenmodes in electromagnetic cavities, loaded with arbitrarily shaped dielectric materials, are computed by the edge element method. The computation shows that the well known ‘spurious modes’ no longer appear. Formulae are given and verified so that the number of zero eigenvalues, which come from ∇ × H = 0, may be accurately predicted. Formulae for the order and density of the global matrices are given for a rectangular cavity regularly divided into bricks and tetrahedra, allowing an associated comparison between the contrasting edge and nodal element formulations. Comparison of the computed results with available theoretical and previously published data show the edge element approach to be a robust, accurate and effective method.

Notes: The development of a general quadratic multilayer plate element is presented for the analysis of arbitrarily layered curved plates. In the formulation, each layer of the multilayer plate can have different orthotropic properties and can deform locally. Examples of bending problems are presented which demonstrate the applicability of the formulation.

Notes: The adsorption of pyrazine by two different Anatolian sepiolites and by natural and ion-exchanged (Fe, Co, Cu and Sn) bentonites was investigated by vibrational spectroscopy. The spectroscopic results indicate that the pyrazine molecules adsorbed on sepiolite and bentonites are coordinated to either surface hydroxyls by H-bonding interaction (in the case of sepiolite) or to exchangeable cations (in the case of bentonites) through both nitrogen lone pairs as bidentate ligands. X-ray diffraction patterns of the clays were also recorded and the basal spacings of pyrazine-treated natural and ion-exchanged bentonites were found to be around 14.7 Å. The results suggest that pyrazine molecules intercalate the interlayers of bentonite with a monolayer arrangement.

Notes: The kinetic behaviour of the solid state thermal decomposition of peroxydisulphate to pyrosulphate, M2[S2O8] → M2[S2O7], M = Na, K, Rb, Cs, has been studied by following the temporal decrease in the intensity of the Raman band arising from the vs(SO3) mode of [S2O8]2-. The data are best analysed using a conventional kinetic approach rather than the Avrami-Erofeev treatment normally applied to solid state reactions. Although the salts display different kinetic orders, 1.5, 2.0, 1.0 and 1.0 for the Na, K, Rb and Cs salts respectively, the lack of crystallographic data does not allow us to rationalize these differences.

Notes: The kinetic behaviour of the solid state thermal decomposition of dithionate to sulphate, M2[S2O6] → M2[SO4], M = Na, K, has been studied by following the temporal decrease in the intensity of the Raman band arising from the vs(SO3) mode of [S2O6]2-. The sodium salt displays first order kinetics, but the kinetic behaviour of the potassium salt could not be accounted for using either the conventional kinetic treatment or the Avrami-Erofeev treatment. The Raman derived data for the sodium salt agree well with previously reported pressure derived data supporting the contention that Raman spectroscopy is a valid technique to use in obtaining solid phase kinetic data.

Notes: The solid state thermal decompositions of the alkali metal peroxydisulphates M2[S2O8], M = Na, K, Rb, Cs, have been studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in situ high temperature Raman spectroscopic studies, and by recording the infrared and Raman spectra of the products formed when the salts are heated to various temperatures. In addition to detecting the exotherm associated with the decomposition of peroxydisulphate to pyrosulphate and the endotherm associated with the fusion of pyrosulphate, the DSC study detected previously unreported solid state phase changes of Cs2[S2O8] and K2[S2O7]. These phase changes are also detectable using Raman spectroscopy. The TGA study indicates the formation of an intermediate in the decomposition of pyrosulphate to sulphate, but it is not possible to determine its stoichiometry from the TGA study.
