Abstract This paper deals with the detailed development of an ultraprecision lathe for the purpose of machining magnetic disks. The rotational and feed accuracy and stiffness of the air bearing and the air slide were tested, respectively. A microcutting device using a piezoelectric material was also developed in order to maintain a uniform and precise depth of cut. Experiments machining a magnetic disk were carried out.
