Notizen: Abstract We have investigated the pattern of transposition of an intact, 4.6-kbAc element inArabidopsis thaliana. Because the trans-acting transposition function (transposase) ofAc is not fully penetrant in Arabidopsis, it is not possible to use it as a diagnostic feature to scoreAc genetically, as has been done in maize and tobacco. Instead, the presence or absence of a transposedAc (trAc) was monitored by Southern blots. Germinal transpositions from the marker SPT::Ac were selected using a streptomycin germination assay and scored for the presence of atrAc. Segregation of thetrAc element and the SPT donor locus was scored in the F2 progeny of the germinal revertants, and the recombination fraction between thetrAc element and SPT was estimated by the method of maximum likelihood. We have found that, as in maize and tobacco, receptor sites fortrAcs in Arabidopsis tend to be linked to theAc donor locus.

Notizen: Abstract Two new methods are reported from which the mixing activity coefficients of both electrolytes in a binary mixture can be computed simultaneously from fitting the activity coefficients of one of the electrolytes only and without using the derivatives of the parameters. Furthermore, variations caused by changing the fractional ionic strengths at fixed total ionic strength entails no assumptions about the ionic strength dependence of the mixing coefficients. The methods are shown to be superior to other methods. The results for the system HCl+KCl at 25°C are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Activity coefficients of hydrochloric acid have been determined from electromotive-force measurements of cells containing mixtures of hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride at constant total ionic strengthsI=0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 mole-kg−1 at 298.15°K. Interpretations based on Scatchard's and Pitzer's equations indicate that Pitzer's equations probably provide a more convenient guide to the thermodynamic properties of the mixed-electrolyte solutions. Activity coefficients for calcium chloride were derived from these equations.

Notizen: Abstract Activity coefficients of hydrochloric acid in aqueous mixed solutions with magnesium chloride have been determined at 298.15°K from electromotiveforce measurements of the cell Pt, H2(g, 1 atm.)⋎HCl(mA), MgCl2(mB)⋎AgCl⋎Ag at constant total ionic strengths of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 moles-kg−1. The data were interpreted in terms of Scatchard's and Pitzer's equations whereupon it was found that the former gave a better fit of the experimental data but the latter were reasonably adequate. Activity coefficients for magnesium chloride in the mixtures were derived using Pitzer's equations.

Notizen: Abstract Electromotive-force measurements are reported for mixtures of HBr and BaBr2 in water at 25°C at constant total ionic strengths. Activity coefficients for HBr were analyzed using Pitzer's equations and Scatchard's neutral-electrolyte treatment. Both methods gave comparable results if the effects of higher-order electrostatic terms on the H+−Ba+2 interactions were included in Pitzer's treatment. Furthermore, the value of the H+−Ba+2 interaction parameter, θ(s), which should be independent of the anion, is indeed close to that for binary mixtures of these ions having chloride as common ion.

Notizen: Abstract Activity coefficients of hydrochloric acid in aqueous solutions of lanthanum chloride were determined by an emf method at 25°C over an ionic strength range 0.05–3 mol-kg−1. Harned's rule was obeyed within experimental error by the acid in all the mixtures. However, the fit with Pitzer's equations was not as good as the Harned rule fit, even though the effects of higher-order electrostatic terms were considered. Activity coefficients for the salt in the mixtures were derived using the Pitzer equations and fitted to the Harned equation, whereupon Harned's rule was found to be valid for the salt up to an ionic strength of 0.3 mol-kg−1 only.

Notizen: Abstract Various methods used in the analysis of the activity coefficients for binary mixtures of symmetrical electrolytes are compared. The accuracies of these methods are examined through their standard deviations of the log γ fittings, maximun deviations max Δ, and the number of fitted points n, which have exceeded the experimental tolerance. The reason for the different degree of accuracy obtained are discussed in terms of the complexity of the g0 function.

    Thema: Chemie und Pharmazie
Notizen: Abstract Activity coefficients for NaBr in the system NaBr+NaFormate+H2O at 25°C were determined from emf measurements at different total ionic strengths. At each total ionic strength, the measurements were carried out at different Na-Formate/NaBr ionic strength ratios. The experimental activity coefficients were comparatively analyzed using Scatchard's, Pitzer's and Lim's methods. Although all these models can be successfully applied to the analysis of this mixed system, the All Mixing Coefficients (LA) and Consistency Test (LT) models lead to better fittings than the others.
