    Notes: Abstract The measurement of sound transmission in human lungs has shown promise to reveal, by noninvasive methods, information about the structure of peripheral airways and lung tissue. The paper gives a detailed explanation of the instrumentation and testing methods developed to measure sound transmission through human lungs and thoracic structures in the 5–20 kHz frequency range and describes in detail experiments comparing the acoustic lung transmission patterns of four different subject groups. The experimental results are compared with those predicted by an acoustical model of sound transmission through lung parenchyma.

    Influence of effective two- and three-particle interactions on atomic fine structure in mixed configurations (5d+6s) N (1986)

    Notes: Abstract The influence of all effective two- and three-particle interactions appearing in second order of perturbation theory was investigated for the 5d-shell atoms Hf, Ta, W, Re, and Os. The radial parts of the effective operators were treated as free parameters which were determined by a least squares fit of calculated energy levels to the observed ones. An appreciable reduction of the mean deviation was achieved in all spectra considered. A test of the eigenvectors of the effective Hamiltonian was performed by a comparison of calculatedg J values andg J values, which were measured with high precision by radiofrequency spectroscopy. The agreement found is typically better than a few parts in 104.
