Description: The effect of electron-electron Coulomb correlation on orbital electron capture by the nucleus was treated by the multiconfigurational Hartree-Fock approach. The theoretical Be-7 L/K capture ratio was found to be 0.086, and the Ar-37 M/L ratio, 0.102. Both ratios were smaller than the independent particle predictions. Measurements exist for the Ar M/L ratio, and agreement between theory and experiment was excellent.

Description: X-ray photoelectron and Auger spectra involving N sub 1, N sub 2, and N sub 3 vacancy states of Pd, Ag, Cd, In, and Sn were measured and compared with results of free-atom calculations. As previously observed in Cu and Zn Auger spectra that involve 3d-band electrons, free-atom characteristics are found, with regard to widths and structure, in the Ag and Cd M sub 4-N sub 4,5 N sub 4,5 and M sub 5-N sub 4,5 N sub 4,5 Auger spectra that arise from transitions of 4d-band electrons. Theoretical N sub 1 widths computed with calculated free-atom Auger energies agree well with measurements. Theory, however, predicts wider N sub 2 than N sub 3 vacancy states (as observed for Xe), while the measured N sub 2 and N sub 3 widths are nearly equal to each other and to the average of the calculated N sub 2 and N sub 3 widths. The calculations are made difficult by the exceedingly short lifetime of some 4 p vacancies and by the extreme sensitivity of super-Coster-Kronig rates, which dominate the deexcitation to the transition energy and to the fine details of the atomic potential.

Description: The effect on low-energy atomic inner-shell Coster-Kronig and super Coster-Kronig transitions that is produced by relaxation and by exchange between the continuum electron and bound electrons was examined and illustrated by specific calculations for transitions that deexcite the 3p vacancy state of Zn. Taking exchange and relaxation into account is found to reduce, but not to eliminate, the discrepancies between theoretical rates and measurements.

Description: Argon L1 fluorescence yields have been calculated for the individual multiplet states of ions containing from three to six M-shell vacancies. Effective fluorescence yields for these charge states are computed for statistically distributed states and for distributions that would arise in sequential stripping. For Ar L1M6, the latter result is about 430 times smaller than the former.

Description: Systematic relativistic (Dirac-Hartree-Slater) calculations of atomic K-shell Auger transition probabilities are reported for 25 elements with Z between 18 and 96, inclusive. K-level Auger widths are found to be enhanced by relativistic effects, while total K-level widths are reduced. Relativistic theoretical K-shell fluorescence yields are in excellent agreement with experiment. Theoretical relative intensities of K-LX Auger transitions in heavy elements, calculated in j-j coupling, agree well with measurements; for low Z, configuration interaction and intermediate coupling must apparently be included.

Description: Theoretical K-LL Auger spectra from relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Slater calculations in intermediate coupling with configuration interaction (ICWCI) are considered. Calculated transition rates for 25 elements with Z between 18 and 96, inclusive, are listed and compare well with experimental data. Relativistic effects are found to be important above Z equal to about 35, and ICWCI is necessary to describe the spectra for Z less than about 60.

Description: The 2p fluorescence yield of Ar in the presence of zero to six 3p holes has been calculated by statistically averaging the fluorescence yields of initial states that consist of individual multiplet configurations, formed by coupling the 2p vacancy to the partially filled 3p shell. The L(sub 2,3) fluorescence yields for the (2p)-1 (3p)-n configurations of Ar are found to be 1.48, 17.97, 24.83, 37.84, 79.61, 112.16, and 121.48 x .0001 for n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, respectively. Results agree reasonably well with experimental fluorescence yields deduced from ion-atom collision measurements.
