    Description: The luminosity of the brightest cluster galaxies remains the best standard candle for observational cosmology. Studies of over 250 relatively nearby clusters show that the luminosity of these objects within an aperture of constant metric diameter has a dispersion of only 0.35 mag. The observations considered by Schneider et al. (1983) were acquired to measure the aperture luminosities of the brightest cluster galaxies. However, the data base, because of its high signal-to-noise ratio and large spatial coverage, allows several other investigations to be performed. In the present investigation, surface photometry of the brightness three galaxies within approximately 250 kpc of the cluster center is presented, taking into account the cores of 83 Abell clusters. The relevance of the photometry to cosmological studies is also discussed. It is found that dynamical friction does play an extremely important role in determining properties of brightest cluster galaxies and cluster morphology.

    Description: The diffusive acceleration of highly relativistic particles at a shock is reconsidered. Using the same physical assumptions as Blandford and Ostriker (1978), but dropping the restriction to nonrelativistic shock velocities, the authors find approximate solutions of the particle kinetic equation by generalizing the diffusion approximation to higher order terms in the anisotropy of the particle distribution. The general solution of the transport equation on either side of the shock is constructed, which involves the solution of an eigenvalue problem. By matching the two solutions at the shock, the spectral index of the resulting power law is found by taking into account a sufficiently large number of eigenfunctions. Low-order truncation corresponds to the standard diffusion approximation and to a somewhat more general method described by Peacock (1981). In addition to the energy spectrum, the method yields the angular distribution of the particles and its spatial dependence.

    Description: The discovery of extremely unusual structure in the radio source MG1131+0456 is reported. In a radio map with subsarcsecond resolution the object appears as an elliptical ring of emission accompanied by a pair of more compact sources, nearly diametrically opposed and offset by about 0.3 arcsec to the southwest of the ring. There is a faint, slightly extended, optical counterpart. A continuum but no emission lines is detected in its spectrum; therefore, the redshift of the counterpart is unknown. The radio morphology suggests that this source may be an example of an 'Einstein ring', a highly symmetric case of gravitational lensing in which the source is imaged into a ring. Other explanations are considered and excluded by the data. Another possibility is that MG1131+04565 represents a new type of astronomical object.

    Description: Measurements of the velocity differences (delta v's) in pairs of galaxies from large statistical samples have often been used to estimate the average masses of binary galaxies. A basic prediction of these models is that the delta v distribution ought to decline monotonically. However, some peculiar aspects of the kinematics have been uncovered, with an anomalous preference for delta v approx. equal to 72 km s(sup-1) appearing to be present in the data. The authors examine a large sample of binary galaxies with accurate redshift measurements and confirm that the distribution of delta v's appears to be non-monotonic with peaks at 0 and approx. 72 km s (exp -1). The authors suggest that the non-zero peak results from the isolation criteria employed in defining samples of binaries and that it indicates there are two populations of binary orbits contributing to the observed delta v distribution.

    Description: A multi-wavelength study of an extreme type of galaxy which will assist us in our attempts to understand the formation and evolution of galaxies was completed. In particular, a subset of low surface brightness (bar-mu(sub B) is approximately greater than 25 mag arcsec(sup -2)), giant galaxies (LSBG's) which contain large amounts of atomic gas (M(HI) is approximately greater than 10(exp 10) solar mass), have blue optical diameters similar to those of giant spiral galaxies, but which do not seem to have prodigious amounts of ongoing star formation were observed. Our sample was drawn from the first and second Palomar Sky Surveys. This population of galaxies has been largely ignored because of selection effects which make it difficult to detect optically. The question of how these massive systems differ from the higher surface brightness 'normal' spiral galaxies is addressed. Using B and R surface photometry, in conjunction with H-alpha, HI, CO-12, and far-infrared data, an attempt is made to determine if these galaxies had an early epoch of star formation that has since faded, have ongoing star formation with an unusual interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), or are perhaps galaxies which have never efficiently formed stars due to a lack of molecular clouds.

    Description: The lunar microcrater phenomenology is described. The morphology of the lunar craters is in almost all aspects simulated in laboratory experiments in the diameter range from less than 1 nu to several millimeters and up to 60 km/s impact velocity. An empirically derived formula is given for the conversion of crater diameters into projectile diameters and masses for given impact velocities and projectile and target densities. The production size frequency distribution for lunar craters in the crater size range from approximately 1 nu to several millimeters in diameter is derived from various microcrater measurements within a factor of up to 5. Particle track exposure age measurements for a variety of lunar samples have been performed. They allow the conversion of the lunar crater size frequency production distributions into particle fluxes. The development of crater populations on lunar rocks under self-destruction by subsequent meteoroid impacts and crater overlap is discussed and theoretically described. Erosion rates on lunar rocks on the order of several millimeters per 10 yr are calculated. Chemical investigations of the glass linings of lunar craters yield clear evidence of admixture of projectile material only in one case, where the remnants of an iron-nickel micrometeorite have been identified.

    Description: We have carried out a systematic search for emission-line objects through photometrically calibrated CCD grism surveys with the Palomar 200-inch telescope in transit mode, covering 62 square degrees. These surveys have yielded 141 quasars detected by their C IV or Ly-alpha emission in the redshift range 2.0 - 4.7. We use this sample and the known flux limits to derive the slope of the luminosity function and the space density above a given line luminosity, as a function of redshift. While space densities are approximately constant at redshifts 2.0 - 3.0, they are declining steeply for redshifts larger than 3.

    Description: The way in which the luminosity of brightest cluster galaxy varies with cluster parameters is investigated in a sample of 84 Abell clusters of moderate redshift and of richness classes in the zero-to-5 range. A photometric system is used which is well matched with the low noise CCD detector employed, as well as to the arrangement of galaxies with different redshifts on a standard system. The data, together with measurements from earlier work which forms a low redshift sample of the 199 brightest cluster galaxies, confirm that the luminosity dispersion in first-rank cluster galaxies is about 0.34 mag. The colors of giant ellipticals have not changed since redshifts of 0.25, and the richness correction is well established at 0.10 mag/Abell richness class. Application of these corrections reduces the luminosity dispersion to 0.29 mag.

    Description: Thirty-four spectra of DQ Her are analyzed which were obtained with a time resolution greater than 0.01 cycle. It is found that: (1) the 18th mag visual companion of DQ Her has an energy distribution similar to that of a late F star and is not likely to be a member of the system; (2) the time of minimum has no wavelength dependence and agrees better with the elements of Patterson et al. (1978) than with a linear ephemeris; (3) only very weak evidence exists for the detection of a late-type star, which is of spectral type M4 or later, even at mideclipse; (4) the spectrum of the residual light at mideclipse can be represented by optically thin free-free plus bound-free emission at a temperature of 35,000 K, an electron density of (1-10) trillion per cu cm, and a star contributing about 90% of the red flux; and (5) there is a definite asymmetry in the light curve, as well as strong evidence for a localized bright spot on the side of the disk eclipsed last.

    Description: Optical imaging and spectroscopy measurements were obtained for six of the high galactic latitude infrared sources reported by Houck, et al. (1984) from the IRAS survey to have no obvious optical counterparts on the POSS prints. All are identified with visually faint galaxies that have total luminosities in the range 5 x 10 to the 11th power stellar luminosity to 5 x 10 to the 12th power stellar luminosity. This luminosity emerges virtually entirely in the infrared. The origin of the luminosity, which is one to two orders of magnitude greater than that of normal galaxies, is not known at this time.
