    Description: IUE spectra of the A- or F-type supergiant BD + 39 deg 4926 have been combined with existing optical data. Comparison with model atmospheres yields an effective temperature of 7750 K, gravity log g of 0.5, and a reddening corresponding to E(B-V) of 0.15. The Mg II wavelength 2800 feature was used to estimate the abundance of Mg(+), and the value of log (epsilon (Mg(+)/epsilon (Ca(+)) was found to be about 2.7.

    Description: Published observational data on 29 outer-Galactic-halo RR Lyr stars (Saha, 1984, and Saha and Oke, 1984) and from other surveys are analyzed to characterize the mass distribution, chemical composition, kinematics, and dynamics of the outer Galaxy (up to galactocentric radius R = 40 kpc). The results are presented in graphs and tables and discussed. Findings reported include a rapid fall-off of RR Lyr density at R = 25 kpc, Fe/H varying from -1.0 to -2.2 (with two stars at -0.5), no net Fe/H gradient in the far halo, and Galactic mass (from dynamical computations) about 3 x 10 to the 11th solar mass within R = 25 kpc.

    Description: Deep charge-coupled device images of a field in IC 1613 away from the star forming central regions were taken with the '4-shooter' on the Hale 5 m telescope, and processed to find photometrically measure variable stars. Fifteen RR Lyrae stars were found, and periods, light curves, and finding charts for them are presented. The mean magnitude of RR Lyrae stars in this galaxy is deduced to be 24.90 mag. Assuming the absolute g magnitude for RR Lyraes to be Mg = 0.73 mag, and using extinction Ag = 0.07 mag, a distance modulus of 24.10 +/- 0.27 mag is derived. The finding of RR Lyrae stars indicates the unambiguous presence of an old population. The distance modulus derived from them is smaller than that derived from the Cepheids by an amount which is dependent upon the RR Lyrae zero-point calibration adopted, and may be as large as 0.3 mag. The difference has the same sense and magnitude as the discrepancy in the LMC. The probable sources of the problem are discussed.

    Description: Observations of the Leo A dwarf galaxy, obtained over the period from 1980 to 1991 are reported. Forty two separate Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) frames were searched for variable stars. A total of 14 suspected variables were found, 9 had sufficient coverage for period determination, and 5 had Cepheid light curves. Four of these stars fit well on a P-L relation and yield a distance modulus, after correction for Galactic foreground extinction, of m-M = 26.74. This corresponds to a distance of 2.2 Mpc, placing Leo A near the Local Group zero-velocity surface.

    Description: Deep CCD images were obtained for the object UGC-A86, an object identified on the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, and listed in the Addendum of the UGC. Two objects are revealed at this location: perhaps a chance superposition in the sky of two galaxies at different distances or two interacting galaxies, or two components of the same galaxy. The brighter component is well resolved into stars, and a color-magnitude diagram has been obtained for it. Interpretation of the color-magnitude diagram is somewhat ambiguous, but it seems very likely that this galaxy is a dwarf member of the Local Group.

    Description: Evidence of triaxiality and central mass concentration in the Galaxy and in M31 and M87 is examined. It is proposed that globular clusters on box orbits in the inner parts of these systems pass close enough to the center to be destroyed by tidal shocks. Remaining clusters will preferentially populate tube orbits with relatively high angular momentum. The process is used to explain the cluster distribution in M87 reported by Lauer and Kormendy (1986). Models are presented for cluster destruction by massive black holes in M87's dark halo. Consideration is given to techniques for testing the suggestion that clusters form only on box orbits.

    Description: Deep CCD images of NGC 185 taken with the '4-shooter' on the Hale 5-m telescope have been processed to find and photometrically measure RR Lyrae stars. 176 variable stars have been found, of which 151 are surmised to be RR Lyrae stars. Finding charts, periods, and light curves are presented. The RR Lyrae stars in this galaxy have a very wide distribution of periods indicating a wide range of metallicity. The mean magnitudes of the RR Lyraes is determined to be 25.20 mag. A distance modulus of 23.79 is derived, based on the best currently available values of foreground extinction and mean absolute magnitudes of RR Lyrae stars.

Finding charts, periods, and light curves are presented. The mean magnitude of the RR Lyraes is determined to be 25.25 mag. A distance modulus 23.92 is derived, based on the best currently available values of foreground extinction and mean absolute magnitudes of RR Lyrae stars. A wide range of periods is seen for the RR Lyrae stars, indicating a correspondingly wide range of metallicities for the stars in NGC 147. The distance modulus derived here places NGC 147 at a distance of 154 kpc from the center of M31, and in conjunction with the line sight velocities of these two galaxies, this implies a lower limit of 7.2 x 10 to the 11th solar masses for the mass of M31.

    Description: An analysis of repeated deep CCD observations of a field in the Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxy NBC 147 has resulted in the detection of 34 variable stars. The periods and shapes of light curves obtained for 13 of these variables show nine of them to be RR Lyrae stars. An intensity-averaged phase-weighted-mean g magnitude of 25.15 (+ 0.17 or - 0.15) is found which indicates a distance modulus to NGC 147 of 23.85 (+ 0.22 or - 0.20), or 589 kpc.
