    Description: We investigate the origin of diffuse low-energy Galactic gamma-ray continuum down to about 30 keV. We calculate gamma-ray emission via bremsstrahlung and inverse Compton scattering by propagating an unbroken electron power law injection spectrum and employing a Galactic emmissivity model derived from COSB observations. To maintain the low energy electron population capable of producing the observed continuum via bremsstrahlung, a total power input of 4 x 10 exp 41 erg/s is required. This exceeds the total power supplied to the nuclear cosmic rays by about an order of magnitude.

    Description: The study reports observations of positron annihilation radiation from the inner region of the Galaxy which show that there are two components of the radiation: a steady, diffuse Galactic component and a variable component from discrete, presumably compact sources. The existence of the variable component is supported by the ensemble of all narrow FOV 511 keV line observations, including recent detections with OSSE. The fit of this ensemble to a time-independent source distribution can be excluded at the approximately 3-sigma level. The same ensemble, combined with the broad FOV SMM observations of Galactic 511 keV line emission, sets constraints on the Galactic distribution of the diffuse component.

    Description: Accretion of matter onto the surface of a white dwarf in a binary system can push it over the Chandrasekhar mass limit and may cause it to collapse into a neutron star without mass ejection or with the ejection of only a small mass. Such an optically quiet stellar collapse should be accompanied by a neutrino burst which could be detected with underground neutrino detectors if the collapse took place in our own Galaxy or in very close nearby galaxies. However, the frequency of such collapses is not known. Here we show that, if the ejected mass is less than 3 x 10 exp -4 solar mass, the electron-positron pairs resulting from neutrino-antineutrino annihilations outside the neutrinosphere produce a gamma-ray burst which could be observed out to distances of at least 300 Mpc, and that the observed rate of gamma-ray bursts sets stringent upper limits on the frequency of bare or nearlly bare neutron star births.

    Description: We model the distribution in the Galaxy of 0.511 MeV line emission and the implied positron annihilation using plausible distributions based on observations at other photon energies. We use 0.511 MeV line observations from the Galactic center and from directions away from the Galactic center to normalize the two-dimensional 0.511 MeV sky maps. We find that in order to understand all of the available data it is necessary to invoke the presence of a time-variable component of 0.511 MeV line emission in addition to an underlying diffuse component. The large 0.511 MeV fluxes observed with broad field of view detectors, such as the SMM gamma-ray spectrometer, can be reconciled with the small fluxes seen with narrow field-of-view instruments (GRIS and OSSE) from directions away from the Galactic center if the diffuse emission follows the distribution of Galactic novae for which the recently detected 0.511 MeV line emission from the Galactic center with OSSE is predominantly of diffuse origin. For future GRIS and HEXAGONE observations from the direction of the Galactic center we predict a minimum 0.511 MeV line flux of (6.0 +/- 0.9) x 10 exp -4 photons/sq cm/s.

    Description: The cross section for Li-7 production in alpha-alpha reactions is shown to be increased by about a factor of 2 due to the excitation levels of Li-7 and Be-7 at 478 keV and 431 keV, respectively. The cross section for Li-6 production, however, remains the same as calculated on the basis of the detailed balance principle. The lines at 478 keV and 431 keV may link Li-7 production to feasible gamma-ray observations.

    Description: It is pointed out that excited states of He-4 cannot produce gamma ray line emission of astrophysical significance, contrary to a recent suggestion of Reina et al. (1974). The only possible gamma-ray lines in He-4 are above 25 MeV, but their excitation cross sections appear to be so small that they are probably of little astrophysical significance.

    Description: Gamma-ray emission is considered in terms of its usefulness in determining the physics of nucleosynthesis, the interstellar medium, solar flares, supernovae, and neutron stars. The mechanism of gamma-ray line emission is reviewed, i.e., nuclear deexcitation, radiative capture, positron annihilation, and possibly cyclotron radiation in the strong magnetic fields of neutron stars. Various gamma-ray spectra, obtained from balloon and satellite data, are analyzed with attention to solar particle energies and densities, including particle emission from black-hole supernova remnants.

    Description: The radiation from electron-positron annihilations in a plasma of temperature above 10 to the 8th K is investigated as a possible source of the emission line at energies between 400 and 460 keV frequently seen in gamma-ray bursts. The annihilation rate and luminosity of an optically thin electron-positron plasma and the energy distribution of the resulting annihilation radiation are calculated by the use of a Monte Carlo technique as functions of temperature. Results indicate the annihilation spectrum to be peaked at an energy of 0.511 MeV plus a temperature-dependent blueshift, and the annihilation line to be significantly temperature-broadened. The widths of the observed burst emission lines set an upper limit of 3 x 10 to the 8th K on the temperature of any pair annihilation region in burst sources, which is considerably lower than the typical kinetic temperatures of the radiating particles. It is thus inferred that either the annihilation region is nonthermal, or spatially distinct from the burst site.

    Description: The interpretations and implications of the astrophysical observations of gamma-ray lines are reviewed. At the Galactic Center e(+)-e(-) pairs from a compact object produce an annihilation line that shows no redshift, indicating an annihilation site far removed from this object. In the jets of SS433, gamma-ray lines are produced by inelastic excitations, probably in dust grains, although line emission from fusion reactions has also been considered. Observations of diffuse galactic line emission reveal recently synthesized radioactive aluminum in the interstellar medium. In gamma-ray bursts, redshifted pair annihilation lines are consistent with a neutron star origin for the bursts. In solar flares, gamma-ray line emission reveals the prompt acceleration of protons and nuclei, in close association with the flare energy release mechanism.
