    Description: We report on BBXRT observations of the cataclysmic variable H0538 + 608 (BY Cam). The unexcelled energy resolution of BBXRT in the vicinity of the iron K line allows the line strength and energy to be constrained more tightly than has previously been possible. We are able to rule out a significant contribution from fluorescence on iron more neutral than Fe XVIII. Implications for the conditions in the accreting gas are discussed.

    Description: We present the first broadband, moderate-resolution X-ray spectral observations of the Seyfert galaxies NGC 4151 and NGC 1068. The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 is shown to have a complex X-ray spectrum with multiple components and a strong, intrinsically narrow Fe K emission line. The characteristics of the scattering medium of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 are determined using the very strong Fe line emission and the lack of features due to oxygen in the X-ray spectrum. The soft X-ray flux from Mrk 3 and Mrk 348 are consistent with that expected from electron scattered X-rays from an obscured Seyfert 1 nucleus. A survey of the X-ray properties of Seyfert 2 galaxies indicates that a substantial fraction may have column densities of about 10 exp 23, suggesting that NGC 1068 has an unusually thick obscuring torus.

    Description: The Fe K-alpha emission line is a potentially powerful diagnostic tool in the X-ray spectra of AGNs, however, this feature has previously been observed with relatively poor spectral resolution. The Broad Band X-Ray Telescope has provided us with the first high-quality, medium-resolution X-ray spectral data. We are able to constrain the width of the 6.4 keV Fe K-alpha line in NGC 4151 to be less than 160 eV FWHM (7,500 km/s), in contrast with former measurements of the line width. Also, we have limited information on the shape of the line profile. In addition to the strong narrow Fe K-alpha feature, we detect weaker broad residuals between 5-8 keV.

    Description: The steep high energy cutoff observed in the spectrum for Her X-1 is analyzed in terms of the severely modified Thomson scattering that dominates the radiative transfer in a highly magnetized plasma near the surface of a neutron star. The data are shown to indicate a field of about 10 to the 13th power G near the magnetic poles and the stopping of accreting matter by nuclear collisions in the neighboring plasma.

    Description: We present new X-ray spectral data for the well-studied Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, which was observed twice for about 20 ks each during the ASCA performance verification phase, once on 1993 May 25 and again on 1993 November 5. The source underwent complex spectral variability, and the observed 2-10 keV flux increased by a factor of 2 while the intrinsic 2-10 keV flux increased by no more than 20%. The data can be modeled with either a dual cold absorber plus a soft X-ray excess consisting of scattered continuum flux and an additional 'ultrasoft' X-ray excess component, or a warm absorber plus scattered continuum flux. There is evidence for variability at less than 1 keV energies that is unrelated to the 2-10 keV continuum. For an ionized-absorber description of NGC 4151, changes in the ionization state of the absorber appear to be unrelated to changes in the ionizing continuum.

    Description: X-ray observations of intrinsic absorption in active galactic nuclei (AGN) provide direct information concerning the amount and physical properties of cool (unionized) material along the line of sight. The X-ray absorption is assumed to occur in the broad-line emitting gas, so that the X-ray data can be used to probe the conditions in the broad-line regions of AGN. The results of Einstein Observatory solid state spectrometer observations are used to derive detailed physical constraints concerning the geometry of the broad-line region. Physical implications of these constraints are also discussed.

    Description: Data on long-term cycles in galactic X-ray sources are reviewed, and classes of variations are identified including precessional activity, recurrent outbursts in Population II sources, and Be/neutron star flare cycles. Cycles of 30-300 days have been found in LMC X-4, Her X-1, SS433, and Cyg X-1 which represent cyclic variations in both the inner and outer parts of the accretion disk. Quasi-periodic cycles with periods ranging from 1/2 to 2 years have been noted in several low-mass X-ray binaries. It is suggested that periodic outbursts in the Be/neutron star systems may result from variable mass transfer in a wide eccentric orbit.

    Description: Data from the all-sky X-ray monitor aboard Ariel V were used to establish that a sudden transition had occurred in emissions from Cyg X-1 on April 22, 1975. Cyg X-1 has been observed almost continuously since around November 1, 1974, and has been relatively constant in apparent magnitude until the reported effect. The results of these observations are discussed.

    Description: A single flare event with a rise time of about 7 s and a decay time of approximately 40 s was observed by the Goddard cosmic X-ray spectroscopy experiment on OSO-8 during observations of 3U 0614+09 in September 1975. The possibility is discussed that the source was 3U 0614+09, which has been compared with the low-mass binary Sco X-1. The spectra during the event could be fitted with blackbody (kT = 0.8-1.1 keV) or thermal bremsstrahlung (kT = 1.1-2.5 keV) models with absorption by cool material. In the blackbody model the source was of the order of 1 million cm in size.
