    Description: Data on X-ray bursts recorded by the OSO-8 and SAS-3 satellites and criteria (rise time, duration, recurrence) for X-ray bursts are examined in a study of possible correlation between the galactic longitude distribution of X-ray burst sources and globular clusters. Correlations are weak, with only two X-ray bursts sources (NGC6624 and the rapid burster) coinciding with globular clusters, another seven possibly coinciding, most not correlated. Ad hoc explanations (globular clusters obscured by dust clouds, bursts associated with remnants of disrupted globular clusters evolved into supermassive black holes) are considered briefly.

    Description: Images obtained by the Halley multicolor camera using the clear filter with a pass band from 300 to 1000 nm were used to study dust activity in the comet nucleus. Comparisons with ground based observations confirm that dust production towards the Sun increases in activity relative to the southern background source while the Giotto spacecraft was approaching. This is in agreement with the assumption that the sunward activity becomes stronger when the source rotates towards the Sun. Estimated dust column density is 90 billion/sqm, with optical thickness less than or = 0.3. Surface reflectivity is less than 1%, indicating a very rough surface with large fractions of shadowed areas.

    Description: Measurements from the Giotto radio science experiment representing the Doppler frequency shift and the intensity level of the X-band downlink signal of the Giotto spacecraft during its encounter with comet Halley are shown. Continuous data reception was maintained throughout the encounter. The Doppler shift measured within a time interval of 100 sec is due to drag effects in the cometary atmosphere causing a deceleration of the spacecraft. The total change of velocity of Giotto is 23.2 cm/sec resulting in a best estimate of 0.32 g for the total cometary mass impacting Giotto during the Halley flyby. A dust jet structure for the inner coma of comet Halley is derived. Several sharply confined dust jets are distinguishable; for the most prominent one, characteristic properties are deduced. Features of this jet structure are shown to correlate with measurements from on-board Giotto experiments and with Earth-based observations.

    Description: Images obtained by the Halley multicolor camera (HMC) were used to determine the surface brightness of the nucleus. Radiometric values of jet-free areas of the surface are presented and a range of possible surface brightness values are derived. These direct measures are compared with brightnesses derived from the size of the nucleus, as determined from HMC images, and ground-based observations obtained before the onset of coma activity.

    Description: Images obtained by the Halley multicolor camera were used to determine the projected size and shape of the nucleus. The location of the terminator and numerous surface features were determined. There is good correlation between the brightest surface features and the dust jets; however, many bright features are seen which are not associated with jets. Most of the observed features are circular and appear to be related to surface elevation. The angularity of the terminator gives an indication of the three-dimensional structure of the face which was observed.

    Description: The Giotto magnetic field experiment has provided the first magnetic field data on the interaction between the solar wind and a low gas production comet, P/Grigg-Skjellerup. Waves produced by ion pick-up instabilities have been observed throughout the interaction region with particularly simple waveforms at large distances and a rich phenomenology. A bow shock has been observed outbound only, whereas inbound a change in the character of the wave fields occurred without a jump in the magnetic field vector. The inbound and outbound crossings of the bow wave and shock at 19,900 km and 25,400 km from the nucleus, respectively, imply a neutral gas production rate of (6.7 +/- 1.6) x 10 exp 27/sec. A magnetic field cavity of the comet was not crossed. The pile-up region of 2500 km width along the trajectory showed a magnetic field peak of 88.7 nT.

    Description: Thermal-infrared and visual images obtained simultaneously of comet Giacobini-Zinner on UT 1985 August 4.4 are presented. The 10.8-micron map, which spans several arc minutes with 8-arcsec resolution, is the first ground-based infrared image of a comet. Considerable spatial structure is evident in the map, including a curved dust tail consisting primarily of dust grains larger than 100 microns. The width of this large-grain tail implies that these grains depart the nucleus with velocities less than 3 m/s. The distribution of grain albedo is determined for the central 1 arcmin. It is speculated that an observed increase in the albedo by a factor of 2 with distance from the nucleus and prolonged radius vector results from the confinement to the orbital plane of large fluffy grains previously considered for GZ by others; the lower albedo of this dust could result from multiple internal scattering increasing the probability of absorption of incident light. It is estimated that dust was departing the nucleus at the rate of about 8 x 10 to the 5th g/s, comparable to that derived for many other comets.

    Description: The consequences which arise from the mutual collisions occurring between interplanetary meteoroids, the Poynting-Robertson (PR) effect and the radiation pressure ejection of small meteoroids are examined. The size distribution and flux of micrometeoroids at 1 AU are derived and the dependence of spatial density on distance from the sun is established. The following conclusions are made: (1) the lifetimes of meteoroids with masses approximately greater than 0.00001 g are dominated by catastrophic collisions; (2) after bering crushed by collisions, 70 to 85 percent of this mass will be in the form of zodiacal light particles (with masses in the range of 10 to the -10th g to 10 to the -5th g) which will in part be transported by the PR effect towards the sun where they will evaporate; (3) the 15 to 30 percent of the collisional fragments which have masses approximately less than 10 to the -10th g will, for the most part, be injected into hyperbolic orbits by radiation pressure.

    Description: The X-ray spectrum of Her X-1 was observed in the energy range from 2 to 24 keV from August 29 to September 3, 1975. Emission features are observed near the K-alpha iron-line energy which exhibit both broadening and a double line structure. The total luminosity in these features is about 4 by 10 to the 35th power ergs/s. Iron line fluorescence from an opaque cool (not exceeding 1 million K) shell of material at the Alfven surface provides the necessary luminosity in this feature. The double line structure and the line energy width can be due to Doppler shifts if the shell is forced to corotate with the pulsar at a radius of at least 800 million cm. Implications of this model regarding physical conditions near Her X-1 are discussed.

    Description: Observations of the galactic-center-region hard X-ray source GX 1 + 4 by the GSFC X-ray spectroscopy experiment on OSO-8 confirm that GX 1 + 4 is a slow X-ray pulsar. The amount of absorption by cold matter in the spectrum of GX 1 + 4 varies significantly within a 24-hour period, which is typical of many X-ray binary systems. The light curve for the pulsations from GX 1 + 4 appears to be energy-dependent.
