    Description: The profile of the forbidden line of C III (1909) is the same in two pseudo-trailed, low-resolution SWP spectra of the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 obtained with the IUE in November 1980 and December 1982, respectively. In the 1980 spectrum, the C III forbidden line profile is also very nearly the same as that of the resonance line C IV (1550). In the 1982 spectrum, the continuum is 5 times higher and C IV is both much broader and much brighter. In the difference spectrum, which is interpreted to be the spectrum of a time-variable component, C IV (1550) is the only strong emission feature. The profile of this line closely resembles that of a spherical shell surrounding a less dense gas uniformly expanding from a central opaque object. From values of the profile parameters and from the observed time variability of the object, it is inferred that the shell has a radius of about 10 to the 15th cm, a mass of 0.25 solar mass, an expansion velocity of 13,000 km/s, and an electron density of 10 to the 11th per cu cm. From the line profile and the continuum, it is inferred that the opaque central source has approximate radius of 10 to the 14th cm and temperature 23,000 K.

    Description: The relative spatial distributions of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) and normal galaxies that lie in the sky area covered by the 'Slice' survey (de Lapparent et al., 1986) are considered. ELGs follow the same spatial distribution as found for the Slice galaxies, with the exception that they avoid the Coma cluster. It is pointed out that although the present ELGs are not shown to occur in regions of very low density, the luminosity distribution of the sample is such that luminosity/mass-dependent effects on the spatial distribution would not be noticeable.

    Description: X-ray, radio, and optical observations are reported for a very poor cluster of galaxies containing the radio source PKS 0301 - 123. A long, 100,000 second X-ray observation using the Einstein Observatory's IPC resulted in the serendipitous discovery of a peculiar extended X-ray morphology associated with the poor cluster. The X-ray emission is extended in the same direction and is approximately the same length as the radio-tailed source, PKS 0301 - 123, which was mapped at 6 and 20 cm with the VLA. Optical redshift observations with the KPNO IIDS on the 2.1 m telescope confirm the identification of the X-ray and radio emission with the poor cluster at z = 0.1. It is argued that the X-ray extension is unlikely to be a chance coincidence of a background source projected onto the foreground cluster. Therefore, four possible mechanisms which might physically link the X-ray and radio emission are considered: thermal bremsstrahlung from a cluster with a flattened potential well; inverse Compton scattering of the relativistic electrons in the radio source, X-ray synchrotron radiation; and heating the cluster gas by the turbulent wake of the radio galaxy. The prospects for future observations of such X-ray/radio coincidences are briefly discussed.

    Description: We obtained ultraviolet images of the Crab Nebula with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope during the Astro-1 Space Shuttle mission in 1990 December. The UV continuum morphology of the Crab is generally similar to that in the optical region, but the wispy structures are less conspicuous in the UV and X-ray. UV line emission from the thermal filaments is not strong. UV spectral index maps with a resolution of 10 arcsecs show a significant gradient across the nebula, with the outer parts being redder, as expected from synchrotron losses. The location of the bluest synchrotron continuum does not coincide with the pulsar.

    Description: A wide range of new observations of the wide-angle tailed radio galaxy 1919+479 and its environs are presented. Multifrequency and multiconfiguration VLA observations are described, ranging in resolution from 0.7 arcsec to 40 arcsec. Distributions of source structures at different scale sizes, spectral indices, and polarizations are presented. Wide-field photographic and CCD imaging data are presented along with a review of the measured galaxy redshifts in the field. A newly reprocessed Einstein IPC X-ray image of the cluster is shown, and the X-ray emission's relationship to the radio morphology is described. The radio, optical, and X-ray data are used to constrain the cD galaxy dynamics and models for bending the radio structure. In particular, the possible role of jet collisions with clouds in the intracluster medium is considered. The applicability of cloud collision models to wide-angle tails in general is considered.
