    Description: We report on a series of ultraviolet spectroscopic observations made with the IUE satellite, which sampled critical outburst stages of the soft X-ray transient Nova Muscae 1991. Continuum light curves, and a multi-epoch line analysis are presented. In addition, a single epoch optical-UV spectra obtained with the HST/FOS is discussed. The optical-UV continuum fits approximately the 'canonical' fv varies as V exp 1/3 power low expected for thermal emission from steady state accretion disk. The emission line spectrum contains prominent high ionization lines of C IV and N V. Weaker lines are seen at intermittent epochs, including some of lower ionization. The derivation of galactic reddening which has significant implications for distance estimates is discussed. Comparisons with previous SXT sources are considered.

    Description: The ultraviolet spectrum of comet P/Halley was monitored with the IUE between 12 September 1985 and 8 July 1986 (r 〈2.6 AU pre and post-perihelion) at regular time intervals except for a two-month period around the time of perihelion. A complete characterization of the UV spectrum of the comet was obtained to derive coma abundances and to study the light emission mechanisms of the observed species. The Fine Error Sensor (FES) camera of the IUE was used to photometrically investigate the coma brightness variation on time scales of the order of hours. Spectroscopic observations as well as FES measurements show that the activity of the nucleus is highly variable, particularly at the end of December 1985 and during March and April 1986. The production rates of OH, CS and dust are derived for the entire period of the observations. The total water loss rate for this period is estimated to be 150 million metric tons.

    Description: Results from UV observations of SN 1987A with the IUE satellite are presented, showing that emission lines of He II, C III, N III, N IV, N V, and O III increase in strength with time after May 24, 1987. It is found that increased emission originated in a photoionized low-density circumstellar gas, lost by the progenitor in its red supergiant phase. A nebular analysis reveals a large nitrogen overabundance, indicating that the gas has undergone substantial CNO processing. This suggests that the progenitor of SN 1987A lost much of its hydrogen envelope before the explosion. The findings are consistent with models in which a red supergiant evolves to the blue supergiant stage before exploding.

    Description: Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) Faint Object Camera (FOC) and observations of Nova Muscae 1991 obtained on May 14-15, 1991 are presented and discussed. A nearly featureless continuum with broad 2200 A absorption feature and no Balmer jump is found. The FOS spectrum is modeled, including previous multiepoch IUE, optical, and X-ray data using a simple blackbody accretion disk model. It is found that the mass transfer rate decays exponentially with a characteristic time of about 43 days. The cooling front predicted by the disk instability model should have been observable, but was not seen.

    Description: The distance to SN 1987A was determined by comparing the angular size of its circumstellar ring, measured from an HST image obtained in a narrow forbidden O III 5007 A filter, with its absolute size derived from an analysis of the light curves of narrow UV lines measured with the IUE. The analysis confirms that the observed elliptical structure is a circular ring seen at a mean inclination of i = 42.8 + or - 2.6 deg and provides a determination of its absolute diameter of (1.27 + or - 0.07) x 10 to the 18th cm. Its ratio to the angular diameter of 1.66 + or - 0.03 arcsec gives an accurate determination of the distance to SN 1987A, i.e., d(1987A) = 51.2 + or - 3.1 kpc.

    Description: Initial results are presented from images of the Orion Nebula obtained with the HST Wide-Field Camera with a resolution of better than about 10 to the 15th cm. The morphology of the forbidden S II emission is markedly different from that seen in H-beta and forbidden O II. The forbidden S II is dominated by filamentary features with widths between 0.1 and 1 arcsesc which sharply highlight ionization fronts moving into dense neutral material. While the surfaces into which these fronts are moving are textured, subarcsec clumps with high density contrast are uncommon. The fields contains a number of HH objects whose structure is revealed by the HST, and which are described.
