    Description: The objective of this study was to determine whether or not cluster particles are sufficiently homogeneous to enable observations from one fragment of the cluster to be extrapolated to the entire cluster. We report on the results of a consortium study of the fragments of a large cluster particle. Multiple fragments from one large cluster were distributed to several research groups and were subjected to a variety of mineralogical and chemical analyses including: SEM, TEM, ion probe, SXRF, noble gas measurements, and microprobe laser mass spectrometry of individual fragments.

    Description: Chondritic anhydrous interplanetary dust particles (IDP's) are widely considered to be the most pristine samples available for the study of the early solar system because of their primitive mineralogy, chemistry, and isotopic characteristics. Previously, anhydrous IDP's were analyzed quantitatively for light elements and found that these particles have significantly higher bulk carbon abundances than known chondritic meteorites. A relationship between carbon abundance and silicate mineralogy was also identified which, in general, shows that particles dominated by pyroxenes have a higher carbon abundance than those dominated by olivines. Particles containing equal amounts of olivine and pyroxene show a range of carbon contents and can be grouped with either the pyroxene- or olivine-dominated particles based on their carbon abundance. It was suggested that high carbon pyroxene-rich IDP's are derived from cometary sources. Bulk compositions and mineralogy of our additional IDP's were determined; one particle has the highest carbon abundance reported in IDP's or any other chondritic material, with the possible exception of the carbon-rich Halley particles.

    Description: Results are presented for the analyses of eight interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) for the volatile elements H, C, N, O, and S and their molecular species, as well as of the volatiles associated with contaminants (i.e., the compounds used during the collection and curation of IDPs), which were carried out using a laser microprobe interfaced with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. It was found that the volatile species from contaminants were always present in the spectra of IDPs. Despite the contamination problems, several indigenous molecular species could be identified, including OH, CO2 or C2H4, C and CS2, CO2 along with CO (possibly indicating the presence of carbonate), H2S, SO, COS, SO2, and CS2. In some cases, the sulfur components can be attributed to aerosols; however, in one of the IDPs, the presence of H2S, SO, COS, and SO2 indicates the possible presence of elemental sulfur.
