Beschreibung: Twenty-three transient interplanetary shocks observed near earth during 1978-1982, and mostly reported in the literature, have also been identified at the Pioneer Venus Orbiter spacecraft. There seems to be a fairly consistent trend for lower shock speeds, farther from the sun. Shock normals obtained using the Pioneer Venus data correspond well with published values from near earth. By referring to the portion of the Pioneer Venus plasma data used here from locations at longitudes within 37 deg of earth, it is found that shocks are weaker at earth, compared with those closer to the sun.

Beschreibung: Simultaneous plasma wave, magnetic field, and energetic ion observations made by the ICE spacecraft in the extended ion pick-up region surrounding comet Giacobini-Zinner are examined to determine the conditions under which two characteristic wave emissions, electrostatic waves at a few kHz, and electromagnetic waves at a few tens of Hz, are generated. The data are consistent with the view that the kHz electrostatic emissions result from an instability of the pick-up photoelectron 'beam' produced when the angle alpha between the magnetic field and the solar wind velocity vector is less than about 60 deg, while the behavior of the tens of Hz electromagnetic waves suggests that they are generated by the pick-up ion 'ring' which is present when alpha exceeds about 60 deg.

Beschreibung: On September 11, 1985 the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) passed behind comet Giacobini-Zinner with a closest approach distance of 7800 km. In agreement with Alfven's interplanetary magnetic field line draping model of cometary type 1 tails, a well defined 10,000 km diameter magnetotail was observed downstream of the inner coma. The ICE magnetic field, plasma electron, plasma wave, and energetic ion observations are used to investigate the structure and stability of the Giacobini-Zinner magnetic tail. Cometary and planetary magnetotails are compared. The ICE magnetotail observations are discussed in relation to the global solar wind interaction with P/Giacobini-Zinner.

Beschreibung: The ICE plasma wave investigation utilized very long electric antennas (100 m tip-to-tip) and a very high sensitivity magnetic search coil to obtain significant local information on plasma physics phenomena occurring in the distant pickup regions of Comet Giacobini-Zinner and Comet Halley; and information on the processes that developed in the coma and tail of Giacobini-Zinner. The ICE plasma wave measurements associated with both comet encounters are summarized, and high sensitivity ICE observations are related to corresponding measurements from the other Halley spacecraft.

Beschreibung: Some interplanetary shocks detected by ISEE-3 are preceded by many hours of strongly enhanced plasma wave noise at a few kHz, while others have essentially no wave precursors above background. It has been shown that these extremes correspond to quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular shocks, respectively, based on the instantaneous orientation angle of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) to the shock normal at the time the shocks cross the spacecraft. It is shown that precursor wave noise level is correlated with field orientation and an extrapolated instantaneous orientation angle throughout the preshock observation interval for two contrasting active and quiet cases, and that intermediate, variable noise levels correspond to intermediate, variable IMF orientations. It is inferred that foreshocks are an intrinsic part of the structure of quasiparallel interplanetary shocks.

Beschreibung: A radio source in the outer heliosphere has been detected by the plasma wave receivers on Voyagers 1 and 2. The radio emission is observed in the frequency range 2-3 kHz, and is above the local solar wind electron plasma frequency whenever supporting plasma density data are available. The maximum spectral density of the emission recorded is about 10 to the -14th V-squared/m-squared/Hz. The bandwidth of the radio noise is about 1 kHz. Possible sources include continuum radiation from Jupiter's distant magnetotail and radiation at the second harmonic of the plasma frequency at the heliopause. If the latter interpretation is correct, these data represent the first remote observations of the heliopause.

Beschreibung: Regions of plasma turbulence extending several tenths of an astronomical unit upstream or downstream of interplanetary shocks have been detected by the plasma wave instrument on ISEE 3. Highly impulsive electric field bursts at 1-10 kHz were found (hours upstream of quasi-parallel interplanetary shocks) whose average and peak amplitudes occasionally increased until the shock crossing, when they were suppressed. A 0.1-1 kHz electric field component was enhanced at nearly all shocks, and persisted downstream. A smooth, high-frequency continuum near and above the local electron plasma frequency was enhanced at, and persisted downstream of, every interplanetary shock studied. While no single interplanetary shock showed every effect, the ensemble of shocks contained at least one example of each type of plasma wave found upstream of the earth's bow shock.

Beschreibung: The jump in plasma parameters exhibited by the intense interplanetary shock event of Nov. 12, 1978 is analyzed using ISEE 1, 2 and 3 data. Magnetic and electric field measurements indicated that the shock magnetic field profile was similar to the earth bow shock profile. Data on the electron and proton densities, temperatures, bulk velocities and alpha particles showed a steady electron temperature increase across the shock on a 12 earth radii scale. The upstream and downstream flow parameters are found to be within 10 percent of Rankin-Hugoniot jump conditions. The shock moved at 614 km/sec and had three dissipative scales, one a few Larmor radii determined by the magnetic field jump, a second 10 earth radii correlated with the electron equilibrium and the other 30 earth radii connected to the energetic proton foreshock.

Beschreibung: ISEE 1, 2 and 3 data from 1978 on interplanetary magnetic fields, shock waves and particle energetics are examined to characterize a quasi-parallel shock. The intense shock studied exhibited a 640 km/sec velocity. The data covered 1-147 keV protons and electrons and ions with energies exceeding 30 keV in regions both upstream and downstream of the shock, and also the magnitudes of ion-acoustic and MHD waves. The energetic particles and MHD waves began being detected 5 hr before the shock. Intense halo electron fluxes appeared ahead of the shock. A closed magnetic field structure was produced with a front end 700 earth radii from the shock. The energetic protons were cut off from the interior of the magnetic bubble, which contained a markedly increased density of 2-6 keV protons as well as the shock itself.
