    Description: Optical and 3.3-mm data for the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1275 (3C 84) are compared. Similarities exist between the variations at the two wavelengths with regard to amplitude, time scale, and interval between events. The question is raised whether these similarities may be the result of a common triggering mechanism.

    Description: A sample of more than 150 redshifts, the majority new, is presented for galaxies brighter than an apparent photographic magnitude of 15.8 in a 28-square-deg field in Hercules containing the clusters A2151, A2152, and A2147. This sample populates a 60,000 cu Mpc conical volume. It contains a super-cluster centered near a radial velocity of 11,000 km/sec a large void of depth approximately 100 Mpc in front of the supercluster, and foreground structure at 4700 and 2300 km/sec the former associated with Seyfert's sextet.

    Description: Low-resolution ultraviolet spectra were obtained for six early-type stars in 1972 December, using an Ebert spectrometer mounted in the service module of the Apollo 17 spacecraft. The spectrometer scanned from 1180 A to 1680 A, with a speed that varied with wavelength according to a program chosen for lunar studies. Spectral resolution was 11 A. The ultraviolet absolute calibration of the instrument was determined by comparison with National Bureau of Standards calibrated photodiodes, and is believed known to plus or minus 10 percent. The absolute intensities are in good general agreement with the observations of other stars and with the predictions of stellar model-atmosphere calculations.

    Description: Rocket and spacecraft far-UV spectral measurements of several astrophysical targets are reviewed. These include observations of Ly-alpha emissions from Arcturus, Apollo-17 far-UV spectrometry of eta UMa and five other stars, Apollo-17 observations of the lunar atmosphere and the diffuse UV background, and far-UV spectral studies of Venus, Jupiter, and Comet Kohoutek. The Arcturus observations indicated a chromosphere with neutral atomic-hydrogen and atomic-oxygen emissions as well as a very weak atomic-carbon line. The planetary studies revealed O I and C I emissions in the Venusian spectrum as well as large Ly-alpha emissions and possible molecular-hydrogen emissions in that of Jupiter. The lunar observations demonstrated that solar protons do not produce an atomic-hydrogen atmosphere on the moon.

    Description: The first direct observation of the ultraviolet spectrum of a quasi-stellar object (QSO) has been made with a rocket-borne telescope. The emission line spectrum of 3C273 is similar to the spectra of high-redshift QSOs, but no absorption is observed. The results provide important new constraints on theoretical models of QSOs, place a severe limit on the density of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium, and suggest a cosmological origin for much of the absorption seen in high-redshift QSOs. Comparison of the ultraviolet spectrophotometry of low- and high-redshift QSOs suggests that the universe is closed, with a deceleration parameter of about 1.

    Description: During the Apollo 17 mission, low-resolution far-ultraviolet spectra were obtained for two parts of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The spectra are reasonably well fit by a model of a 30,000-K star reddened by a (B-V) color excess of 0.3 magnitude, but other combinations of temperature and reddening provide equally good fits.

    Description: The Apollo 17 far-ultraviolet spectrometer was used during trans-earth coast to measure the brightness of two regions at moderate galactic latitudes. The signal obtained can be entirely accounted for by light from stars in the field of view, with no contribution from galactic-plane starlight scattered off interstellar dust. It is concluded that the interstellar grains are extremely poor large-angle scatterers in the far-ultraviolet.

    Description: The origin of life on earth is seen arising as a natural consequence of a long series of physical and chemical processes taking place in association with evolution of the universe. The present theory is that any premordial earth atmosphere, resulting from accumulation from the primitive solar nebula, was probably swept away by the very intensive T Tauri stage of the solar wind. Subsequently, the present atmosphere and oceans of the earth were outgassed from the interior. Biochemical components of the gases were mainly water vapor and carbon dioxide.

    Description: Data on X-ray bursts recorded by the OSO-8 and SAS-3 satellites and criteria (rise time, duration, recurrence) for X-ray bursts are examined in a study of possible correlation between the galactic longitude distribution of X-ray burst sources and globular clusters. Correlations are weak, with only two X-ray bursts sources (NGC6624 and the rapid burster) coinciding with globular clusters, another seven possibly coinciding, most not correlated. Ad hoc explanations (globular clusters obscured by dust clouds, bursts associated with remnants of disrupted globular clusters evolved into supermassive black holes) are considered briefly.

    Description: It is suggested that the explosion of a Type II supernova triggered the collapse of a nearby interstellar cloud and led to the formation of the solar system. Estimates of the abundances resulting from nuclear processing of the supernova ejecta are presented. It appears promising that nucleosynthesis in this single supernova event can account for most isotopic anomalies and traces of extinct radioactivities in solar-system material.
