    Description: From observations of infrared lines, oxygen and nitrogen abundances of the prototype field horizontal-branch stars HD 109995 and HD 161817, the somewhat similar star HD 64488, and the sharp-lined Population I A stars Theta Leo and HR 6559 have been obtained, as well as carbon abundances of HD 161817 and Theta Leo. The results for HD 161817 may be in accord with the predictions of Sweigart and Mengel (1979) for dredge-up during the previous red-giant stage if the non-LTE effects for the O I lines have been properly accounted for, and those for the C I and N I lines are small. This star and HD 109995 are apparently both oxygen and nitrogen poor to the same degree although their iron abundances differ by 0.3 dex.

    Description: The behavior of the two-point galaxy correlation function in volume-limited subsamples of three complete redshift surveys is investigated. The correlation length is shown to scale approximately as the square root of the distance limit in both the CfA and Southern Sky catalogs, but to be independent of the distance limit in the IRAS sample. This effect is found to be due to factors such as the large positive density fluctuations in the foreground of the optically selected catalogs biasing the correlation length estimate downward, and the brightest galaxies appearing to be more strongly clustered than the mean.

    Description: A new model for scaling the outcome of catastrophic collisions from laboratory scale experiments was developed and applied to large bodies where gravitational binding is dominant. This algorithm includes a pressure dependent impact strength which predicts that large asteroids behave as intrinsically strong objects due to compressive loading of overburden throughout their interiors. For small bodies, where the gravitational loading is negligible, this model assumes that the impact strength is independent of size. There was considerable discussion of scaling laws for disruption when these results were presented to one authors colleagues. The pressure strengthening impact strength model was viewed as physically quite plausible; however, it was argued that the impact strength should decrease with increasing size in the size range where gravitational compression is negligible.

    Description: Lines of the first multiplet of niobium are strong in R And and HR 1105. These lines are also present in other S stars: HR 8714, R Cam, V Cnc, R CMi, and T Sgr. They are also visible in the M stars, Beta-Peg and Mu-UMa. An approximation to the abundance ratio, Nb/Fe, has been deduced from pairs of lines having nearly equal intensity. In R And, the ratio is about 200 times the solar value. It is hoped that good plates will soon be obtained for the near infrared region, so that the significant Nb/Rb abundance ratio may be determined.

    Description: Incontrovertible evidence for neutral H2O as an abundant volatile species in any comet contained in near-infrared airborne spectra of Comet Halley is discussed. The airborne spectra are compared with previous infrared studies of comets and with other investigations of comet Halley. The airborne measurements establish criteria for evaluating the spectroscopic sensitivities of future studies of comets with remote infrared methods.

    Description: A search for gaseous neutral CH4 was conducted in the coma of comet Halley on March 20, 1986 using a Fourier transform spectrometer on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. In the field-of-view (24,000 km) the CH4 rotational temperature is equal to the kinetic temperature of the coma molecules due to collisions in most of the region and is frozen in at the outer edge. The spectrum of the nu3 band is due to fluorescence with the R(3) to R(5) lines being most suitable for Earth-based observations. Measured upper (3 delta) limits of 4 times 10 to the minus 19th power W/sqcm for these lines lead to a (7 delta) upper limit of 4 times 10 to the 28th power CH4 molecules per second. This value corresponds to 4% of the water vapor production rate at the time of observation.

    Description: An infrared spectrum of comet Halley was recorded at the Kuiper Airborne Observatory with an instrumental velocity resolution of 1.1 km/sec. A total of 13 emission lines in the 2.65 micron spectral region were assigned to neutral gaseous H2O : 10 in the 001 to 000 band and 3 in the hot 011 to 010 band. The position and widths of these lines are functions of the gas velocity field in the coma. Analysis indicates that the neutral gas outflow is widely dispersed about the nucleus. This spectroscopic picture is consistent with spacecraft images that show multiple jets releasing material into most of the sunfacing hemisphere.

    Description: An infrared Fourier transform spectrometer on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) was used to obtain high resolution spectra of the intense, solar-pumped infrared fluorescent emission in the (001 to 000) band of H2O near 2.6 microns. Differences between the observed H2O excitation and original expectations are discussed, and KAO water production rates are compared to those derived from International Ultraviolet Explorer observations. Possible future directions for high resolution IR spectroscopy of comets are discussed.

    Description: The results of numerical simulations of nonlinear gravitational clustering in universes dominated by weakly interacting, 'cold' dark matter are presented. The numerical methods used and the way in which initial conditions were generated are described, and the simulations performed are catalogued. The evolution of the fundamental statistical properties of the models is described and their comparability with observation is discussed. Graphical comparisons of these open models with the observed galaxy distribution in a large redshift survey are made. It is concluded that a model with a cosmological density parameter omega equal to one is quite unacceptable if galaxies trace the mass distribution, and that models with omega of roughly two, while better, still do not provide a fully acceptable match with observation. Finally, a situation in which galaxy formation is suppressed except in sufficiently dense regions is modelled which leads to models which can agree with observation quite well even for omega equal to one.
