    Description: Spectral images in the 3.3 and 11.3 micron IR emission band around the star SVS 3 in NGC 1333 indicate that the two bands have their origin in different locations, rendering them useless in estimates of the sizes of the molecules emitting the bands. This is in keeping with the emission bands' generation by a mixture of variously sized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) whose smallest species have been dehydrogenated in the vicinity of SVS 3. Hot bands and overtone/combination bands may account for the 3.4-micron band, rather than molecular side-groups of the PAHs.

    Description: H2 is the most abundant molecule in the universe. We demonstrate that this molecule may be an important component of interstellar and possibly intergalactic ices, both because it can be formed in situ, within the ices, and because gas-phase H2 can freeze out onto dust grains in some astrophysical environments. The condensation-sublimation and infrared spectral properties of ices containing H2 are presented. We show that solid H2 in H2O-rich ices can be detected by an infrared absorption band at 4137/cm (2.417 microns). The surface binding energy of H2 to H2O ice was measured to be Delta-H(s)/k = 555 +/- 35 K. Surface binding energies can be used to calculate the residence times of H2 on grain surfaces as a function of temperature. Some of the implications of these results are considered.

    Description: Laboratory-measured, temperature-dependent sticking efficiencies are presently used to derive the surface-binding energies of CO and CO2 on H2O-rich ices, with a view to determining the condensation and vaporization properties of these systems as well as to the measured energies' implications for both cometary behavior and the evolution of interstellar ices. The molecular volume and the surface binding energies are not found to be necessarily related on the basis of simple nearest-neighbor scaling in surface and bulk sites; this may be due to the physical constraints associated with matrix structure-associated physical constraints, which sometimes dominate the volume-binding energies.

    Description: Further tests of the accretion disk hypothesis for FU Orionis objects are presented. High spectral resolution, high signal to noise, 5820-6830 A and 7500-9370 A spectra of V1057 Cyg reveal a correlation between linewidth and line transition lower excitation potential expected from this hypothesis. The magnitude of the effect compares favorably with that predicted by synthetic disk spectra. Additional evidence for previously documented spectral type and linewidth versus wavelength correlations is also presented. This kinematic evidence strongly supports the accretion disk hypothesis.

    Description: The present evaluation of results from over 120 laboratory experiments relevant to the Trafton et al. (1991) discovery of a 2.1253-micron line in the spectrum of Io demonstrates that this band is produced by neither overtones nor combinations of the fundamental bands of molecules already noted on Io. Since the band's frequency is close to the first overtone of the nu(3) asymmetric stretching mode of CO2, attention is given this molecule's behavior under Io conditions. While pure solid CO2, and CO2 intimately mixed in a matrix of solid SO2 and H2S, generate bands of similar widths, these fall at frequencies lower than the Io band. Attention is given to the possible identification of the Io band with CO2 multimers of 'clusters' on Io.

The collection and analysis of extraterrestrial dust particles is important to exobiology because it provides information about the sources of biogenically significant elements and compounds that accumulated in distant regions of the solar nebula and that were later accreted on the planets. The topics discussed include the following: general properties of interplanetary dust; the carbonaceous component of interplanetary dust particles; and the presence of an interstellar component.

    Description: Meteor Crater, Arizona provides an opportunity to study, in detail, elemental fractionation processes occurring during impacts through the study of target rocks, meteorite projectile and several types of impact products. We have performed EMPA and INAA on target rocks, two types of impact glass and metallic spherules from Meteor Crater. Using literature data for the well studied Canyon Diablo iron we can show that different siderophite element fractionations affected the impact glasses than affected the metallic spherules. The impact glasses primarily lost Au, while the metallic spherules lost Fe relative to other siderophile elements.

    Description: The comet 2060 Chiron has proven to be an interesting and enigmatic object. Situated between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, it was originally classified as the most distant asteroid. It began to show cometary behavior in 1987 by increasing a full magnitude in brightness and developing a coma; there is evidence also for similar earlier outbursts. A thorough study of Chiron is important for two reasons: (1) it is a transition object defining the relationship between comets, asteroids, and meteorites; and (2) a full description of its changes in brightness - particularly on time scale of hours - will provide an empirical foundation for understanding the physical mechanisms (including outgassing, sublimation of volatiles, and even significant mass ejections) driving the evolution of comets. Short term outbursts were observed in early 1989, and a rapid decrease in brightness of Chiron's coma was observed in 1990 in the V and R filters. Also, a rotational lightcurve was detected of the nucleus with an amplitude only 1/4 that observed in its quiescent state: this fact indicates the increased importance of the optically thin coma to the observed brightness.

    Description: The Chemistry of Micrometeoroids Experiment (CME) exposed approximately 0.8 sq. m of gold on the Long Duration Exposure Facility's (LDEF's) trailing edge (location A03) and approximately 1.1 sq. m of aluminum in the forward-facing A11 location. The most significant results to date relate to the discovery of unmelted pyroxene and olivine fragments associated with natural cosmic dust impacts. The latter are sufficiently large for detailed phase studies, and they serve to demonstrate that recovery of unmelted dust fragments is a realistic prospect for further dust experiments that will employ more advanced collector media. We also discovered that man-made debris impacts occur on the LDEF's trailing edge with substantially higher frequency than expected, suggesting that orbital debris in highly elliptical orbits may have been somewhat underestimated.
