    Description: Balloon observations registering scatter angles in a liquid scintillator have revealed gamma-ray bursts having energies as low as 10 to the -7th ergs per square cm. The burst distribution is graphed according to energy and frequency. The hypothesis that the bursts are galactic in origin is in good agreement with their small recorded energies and their predicted distribution on the graph.

    Description: Soft X-ray proportional-counter data for nine X-ray flares of class C1 to M1 occurring during the Skylab mission, have been analyzed to yield temperature, volume emission measure, electron density and thermal energy content. Profiles of these quantities are presented, using 1-min averages of 2.5-s resolution data. The event profiles are discussed and comparisons with previous studies made.

    Description: The question is considered of whether the W-type light curves of TX Cnc result from a slightly higher temperature for the low-mass component or from a relatively strong classical gravity-darkening law. Photometric parameters for this W UMa binary area derived using light curves from four epochs exhibiting dissimilar behavior. The analysis is performed for up to five colors, and solutions are obtained by two different approaches in which the temperature difference between the components is treated as a free parameter or is determined by the surface gravitational field. The results of the second approach show that the polar effective temperature of the low-mass star is about 30 K cooler than that of the high-mass star, while the results of the first approach show the low-mass star to be 125 to 175 K hotter. Preference is given to the second approach because gravity darkening provides a simple and adequate explanation of the light curves. Epoch-to-epoch changes in the gravity-darkening and albedo parameters are taken as suggesting differences in the degree of thermal contact over a time scale of a few years.

    Description: It is pointed out that V356 Sgr is an abnormal member of the Algol class of binaries. According to Popper (1955), the primary component is of spectral type B3V and is rotating rapidly, while the secondary is of type A2II and is rotating at least approximately in synchronism with the orbital motion. The system is either semidetached or quite near to being semidetached. The main anomalies are related to the ratio of eclipse depths, the very small reflection effect of the light curves, differences between the duration of the primary and the secondary eclipse, and the unusual characteristics of the primary eclipse. It is concluded that the lack of agreement between theory and observation can be due only to an important attribute of the binary which has not yet been incorporated into the theory. The peculiarities can most reasonably be explained in terms of a geometrically and optically thick disk which surrounds the primary component.

    Description: Results from a preliminary study of interstellar absorption lines in the spectra of the three stars HD149757, HD93521 and HD153919, observed by the IUE during its commissioning phase are presented. They demonstrate the capabilities of the IUE for interstellar research. Results from a preliminary study of the emission line spectrum of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 are outlined and used to study its interstellar reddening.

    Description: During the commissioning phase of IUE several extragalactic objects were observed spectrally at low dispersion in the UV range lambda lambda 1150-3200: the Seyfert galaxies NGC4151 and NGC1068, the QSO 3C273, the BL Lacertae object B2 1101+38, the giant elliptical galaxy M87 and the spiral galaxy M81. The results obtained are presented and a preliminary analysis given for all six objects, discussing the continuous spectrum, extinction, emission line spectrum and absorption line spectrum, where possible for each case. Several new or confirmatory astrophysical results are obtained.

    Description: By means of a collaboration across the Atlantic, very long exposures (about 14 hours) have been made with IUE of two high redshift QSO's during October 1978. Target acquisition and initiation was carried out at Vilspa, and the completion of the exposure and read-out of the image was executed at Goddard. The first object Q 2204-408 is an optical QSO with m(v) = 17.5 and z = 3.18 whose spectrum had just been detected earlier with a 350 minute exposure in the short wavelength spectrograph (Wilson, et al. 1978). In this case two longer exposures were obtained in both spectrographs. The other object is the radio QSO PKS 2126-158 with m(v) = 17.3 and z = 3.27 for which a detectable spectrum was obtained in the short wavelength spectrograph.

    Description: The results of a campaign of monitoring HZ Her with the IUE satellite are presented. The spectrum and light variation outside of eclipse are fairly consistent with the Milgrom and Salpeter (1975) model for emission from the X-ray heated photosphere of the primary. Near eclipse there is UV flux in excess of the prediction of the heated photosphere model. This suggests an additional emitting component whose relative importance decreases toward shorter wavelengths. The excess flux near 1500A appears to vary with 35 day phase in a manner consistent with the model of Gerend and Boynton (1976) in which the flux contributed by the accretion disk is modulated by precession.

    Description: Radial velocity curves for the more massive components of binaries with extreme mass ratios can show a large distortion due to tides, as first recognized by Sterne. Binaries in which the effect is large should be rare because nearly all such binaries would be in the rapid phase of mass transfer. However, the optical counterparts of some X-ray binaries may show the effect, which would then serve as a new means of extracting considerable information from the observations. The essential parts of the computational procedure are given. Light curves for ellipsoidal variables with extreme mass ratios were also computed, and were found to be less sinusoidal than those with normal mass ratios.
