    Description: We present 340 nm continuum and (O II) line images of the nuclear region of the radio galaxy Cygnus A at 0.1 sec resolution. At this high resolution the northwestern of the two nuclear components is resolved into two separate, line emitting subcomponents, and the radio jet points accurately between them. This suggests that the radio jet has blasted a path through emission-line clouds, and that the emission line clouds, having cooled after the passage of the shock, are being photoionized by a (presumably hidden) central source or by the shock itself. We confirm previous detections of a small component at a location corresponding to the radio nuclear position and discuss the evidence for a possible bifurcation of the emission region on the unseen 'counterjet' side.

    Description: Early images were taken with the optically corrected WFPC2 camera of the Hubble Space Telescope of the low-redshift quasars(QSOs) 1229+204 and 2141+175, which are radio-quiet and radio-loud, respectively. We discuss image restoration on the data. The objects were chosen on the basis of structure seen with 0.5 sec resolution with the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope (CFHT) high-resolution camera (HRCAM). 1229+204 was known to be a barred spiral with an asymmetrical extra blue feature: this is now resolved into a ring of knots which are probably young stellar populations in the tidal debris of a small gas-rich companion. There are also shell-like structures along the bar. 2141+175 has a faint smooth curved tidal arm without knots which extends on both sides of a compact elliptical-shaped central galaxy. There is also a short jetlike feature emerging from the nucleus. We discuss the properties and implications of these morphological details.

    Description: We present imaging observations of NGC 1068 taken with the COSTAR-corrected (Corrective-Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement) Faint Object Camera (FOC) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the UV and optical continuum and (O III) emission lines. From these observations the structure of the nuclear region of NGC 1068 is shown to be very complex. Bright filamentary and patchy structures are intermingled with dark lanes. Other interesting features are identified, including the location of the UV peak with respect to the peak of line emission, the existence of an unusual 'twin-crescent' object near the nucleus, and point sources in the field. In the UV to optical flux ratio image, an extended conical region stands out for its blue color which may be tracing reflected nuclear light.

    Description: An overview of the Faint Object Camera and its performance to date is presented. In particular, the detector's efficiency, the spatial uniformity of response, distortion characteristics, detector and sky background, detector linearity, spectrography, and operation are discussed. The effect of the severe spherical aberration of the telescope's primary mirror on the camera's point spread function is reviewed, as well as the impact it has on the camera's general performance. The scientific implications of the performance and the spherical aberration are outlined, with emphasis on possible remedies for spherical aberration, hardware remedies, and stellar population studies.
