    Description: This paper describes a Fourier transform telescope designed to image solar flare X-rays and gamma rays at energies up to 1 MeV with arcsec resolution. The imaging technique makes use of a bigrid collimator divided into a number of smaller areas called subcollimators. The grids in each subcollimator consist of a set of linear apertures so configured that each subcollimator provides a measurement of a single Fourier component of the angular distribution of the source. The imaging concept is therefore a mathematical analog to aperture synthesis in radio astronomy. For X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, this approach has significant advantages in terms of relaxed requirements for astronomy, this approach has significant advantages in terms of relaxed requirements for position sensitivity in the detector and for control of grid alignment in the large scale telescope structure. The concept of the Fourier transform telescope will be illustrated with numerical parameters of a version now under study for the Pinhole/Occulter Facility.

    Description: We discuss recent observations of accreting binary pulsars with the all-sky BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. BATSE has detected and studied nearly half of the known accreting pulsar systems. Continuous timing studies over a two-year period have yielded accurate orbital parameters for 9 of these systems, as well as new insights into long-term accretion torque histories.

    Description: A balloon-borne coded-aperture gamma-ray telescope for galactic and extragalactic astronomy observations is described. The instrument, called GRIP (Gamma Ray Imaging Payload), is designed for measurements in the energy range from 30 keV to 5 MeV with an angular resolution of 0.6 deg over a 20 deg field of view. Distinguishing characteristics of the telescope are a rotating hexagonal coded-aperture mask and a thick NaI scintillation camera. Rotating hexagonal coded-apertures and the development of thick scintillation cameras are discussed.

    Description: The Energetic X-ray Observatory on Space Station (EXOSS) is a mission concept for high-sensitivity coded-aperture sky surveys and studies of the spectral and temporal behavior of astrophysical sources from approximately 3 keV to 1 MeV. The scientific motivation for the mission and the instrument requirements, including the need for high angular resolution to resolve and identify numerous detectable sources, are summarized. Two baseline telescopes are described: one employing a 1.4-sq-m array of Xe gas imaging proportional counters to cover the 3 to 100 keV range with 1 arcmin resolution; the second using a 2.8-sq-m array of NaI/CsI imaging phoswich detectors to span the 20 keV to MeV range with 12 arcmin resolution.

    Description: The basis for the Energetic X-ray Observatory on Space Station is described. Attention is given to the principal scientific objectives of EXOSS, namely, to study in detail AGN and quasars (some 10,000 should be detectable) as well as compact Galactic sources (accreting white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes), and to probe both nonthermal and high-temperature thermal phenomena and the fundamental nature of these objects. The principal technical characteristics of the EXOSS baseline instrument, which overlap in sensitivity in the approximately 40-to-60-keV band, are presented. EXOSS should facilitate efforts to determine: the central power source and the dominant emission mechanisms in AGN, the ways in which the various AGN classes differ as hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray emitters, and the contribution of AGN to the diffuse hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray background.

    Description: The Galactic center region hard X-ray source IE 1740.7-2942 has been observed with the Caltech Gamma-Ray Imaging Payload (GRIP) from Alice Springs, Australia, on 1988 April 12 and on 1989 April 3 and 4. We report here results from the 1989 measurements based on 14 hr of observation of the Galactic center region. The observations showed IE 1740.7-2942 to be in its normal state, having a spectrum between 35 and 200 keV characterized by a power law with an exponent of -2.2 +/- 0.3 and flux at 100 keV of (7.0 +/- 0.7) x 10 exp -5 sq cm s keV. No flux was detected above 200 keV. A search for time variability in the spectrum of IE 1740.7-2942 on one hour time scales showed no evidence for variability.
