Description: Bright supernovae in external galaxies offer a rare opportunity to probe the intervening interstellar media over very extended path-lengths, including the disk and halo of the Galaxy and the parent galaxy of the supernova. SN 1980k was discovered in NGC 6946 on 1980 October 29. In the first month after discovery, high resolution optical and ultraviolet observations were obtained to exploit the supernova as a probe of the intervening interstellar media. The obtained data are discussed. In the spectra, absorption lines were observed of Mg I, Mg II, Fe II, Mn II, Ca II and Na I. The absorption lines are attributed to the intervening interstellar media distributed over the very extended line of sight sampled, of order 7 Mpc. These lines are wider and stronger than any previously measured in the quiescent interstellar gas in the halo and disk of the Milky Way and of external galaxies

Description: The use of both the Einstein and IUE observations of NGC5204 to test some of the hypotheses put forward as a result of an X-ray survey of blue peculiar late type galaxies is discussed. In particular the hypothesis that binary X-ray sources of Pop I progenitors are responsible for most of the X-ray emission, is strengthened by the IUE short wavelength spectrum of NGC5204. This spectrum suggests a number of OB stars in agreement with the inferred from the X-ray luminosity. It also shows an ultraviolet excess in agreement with the large X-ray to blue flux ratio.

Description: Hubble Space Telescope-Wide Field/Planetary Camera-2 (HST-WFPC2) optical and ultraviolet imaging observations of the young double cluster NGC 1850 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are presented. The main cluster, NGC 1850A, is a globular-like cluster and has an age of 50 +/- 10 Myr, while the subcluster, NGC 1850B, which is more loosely distributed, is very young at 4.3 +/- 0.9 Myr. Its young age is confirmed by the detection of a pre-main-sequence population of stars associated to it. The two clusters have considerably different IMF slopes, with the main cluster having a flat slope (f(m) proportional to m(exp -1.4 +/- 0.2)) and the young cluster a much steeper one (f(m) proportional to m(exp -2.6 +/- -0.1)). The LMC field star population displays a broad range of ages, from approximately 0.5 Gyr up to more than 4 Gyr.

Description: New near-ultraviolet and visible (O III) observations of SN 1987A obtained 2511 and 2533 days after outburst with the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) corrected Faint Object Camera (FOC) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are presented. Even though the supernova is now very faint (m approximately equal to 19), the new data are of dramatically higher quality than those obtained previously with the aberrated telescope. The images -- which are now no longer hampered by the spherical aberration halos of the two nearby companion stars -- reveal a well-resolved symmetrical expanding envelope that can be traced out to a radius of approximately equal to 275 mas or approximately equal to 9400 km/s in the near-UV. The apparent diameter of the ejecta has grown to 255 +/- 2 mas Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) in the near-UV and 167 +/- 5 mas (FWHM) in the visible, in close agreement with the expansion rates inferred from earlier FOC observations obtained on days 1275 and 1754. The improved shell-like crescent has started to form within the inner approximately equals 60 mas core of the nebula.

Description: Results are presented of a study of the stellar population of the young globular cluster NGC 1850 in the LMC based on observations made on the HST. The observed magnitude range corresponds to main-sequence stars with masses in the interval 0.8-13 solar masses. The main sequence has a finite width, definitely larger than the spread produced by the measurement uncertainties, suggesting either a spread in ages (20 percent) or the effect of binary systems with a flat distribution of mass ratios.

Description: A systematic study is presented of the UV spectra of star-forming galaxies of different morphological type and activity class using a sample drawn from a uniformly reduced IUE data set. The spectra for a wide variety of galaxies, including normal spiral, LINER, starburst, blue compact, blue compact dwarf, and Seyfert 2 galaxies, are presented in the form of spectral energy distributions to demonstrate the overall characteristics according to morphology and activity class and in the form of absolute flux distributions to better show the absorption and emission features of individual objects. The data support the picture based on UV spectra of the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory and of the Astronautical Netherlands Satellite that spiral galaxies of later Hubble class have more flux at the shortest UV wavelengths than do spiral galaxies of earlier Hubble class.

Description: Observations of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) between 1993 May 31 and 1993 July 19 in 20 epochs in the F555W passband and five epochs in the F785LP passband have led to the discovery of 14 Cepheids in the Amorphous galaxy NGC 5253. The apparent V distance modulus is (m-M)(sub AV) = 28.08 +/- 0.10 determined from the 12 Cepheids with normal amplitudes. The distance modulus using the F785LP data is consistent with the V value to within the errors. Five methods used to determine the internal reddening are consistent with zero differential reddening, accurate to a level of E(B-V) less than 0.05 mag, over the region occupied by Cepheids and the two supernovae (SNe) produced by NGC 5253. The apparent magnitudes at maximum for the two SNe in NGC 5253 are adopted as B(sub max) = 8.33 +/- 0.2 mag for SN 1895B, and B(sub max) = 8.56 +/- 0.1 and V(sub max) = 8.60 +/- 0.1 for SN 1972E which is a prototype SN of Type Ia. The apparent magnitude system used by Walker (1923) for SN 1859B has been corrected to the modern B scale and zero point to determine its adopted B(sub max) value.
