    Description: A ground-based CCD picture of the relatively local dwarf irregular galaxy Sextans B is used to simulate a Space Telescope Planetary Camera image of a similar galaxy at the distance of the Virgo cluster. The gains to be had with the Space Telescope are discussed graphically.

    Description: Photometry of 84 resolved stellar images in GR 8 is presented. The numbers are derived by applying point spread function fitting techniques on digital images obtained with a three-phase Texas Instruments CCD. The resulting color-magnitude diagrams are discussed. These data are compared with theoretical stellar evolutionary tracks and similar results for other resolved galaxies.

    Description: Surface photometry of the first-ranked galaxy in 108 Abell clusters is presented. Galaxy structure, as parameterized by simple Hubble law models, is found to correlate with galaxy absolute magnitude and cluster structure. All the structure data support the dynamical friction evolution model. Twenty-eight percent of the galaxies have multiple component nuclei; the short lifetimes of such systems provide the best available evidence that ongoing evolution actually occurs. Average magnitude and structure evolution rates are derived from the data.

    Description: Two-color aperture photometry of the brightest galaxies in a complete sample of nearby Abell clusters is presented. The results are used to anchor the bright end of the Hubble diagram; essentially the entire formal error for this method is then due to the sample of distant clusters used. New determinations of the systematic trend of galaxy absolute magnitude with the cluster properties of richness and Bautz-Morgan type are derived. When these new results are combined with the Gunn and Oke (1975) data on high-redshift clusters, a formal value (without accounting for any evolution) of q sub 0 = -0.55 + or - 0.45 (1 standard deviations) is found.

    Description: Color-magnitude diagrams for resolved stars in the Pegasus dwarf galaxy in the green, red, and infrared passbands of the extended Gunn photometric system are presented. The evolved nature of the upper main sequence and the lack of luminous red supergiants indicate that recent star formation in Pegasus has been very subdued. Three star clusters are identified. Their red colors indicate they are of intermediate age or older. Two features of the color-magnitude diagrams are of interest: a group of red stars with I at about 21.3, which may be the counterparts of the carbon stars found in the Magellanic Clouds, and a clump in the (I, R-I)-diagram, which is probably the tip of the old giant branch. A provisional distance estimate for Pegasus of 1.7 Mpc is derived, placing it at the outer margins of the Local Group.

    Description: Luminosity functions and color-magnitude diagrams are given for 652 stars in the Sextans A dwarf irregular galaxy, and they are compared with other Local Group galaxies. The brightest red and blue stars presently determined are in agreement with those of Sandage and Carlson (1982), and a group of red stars is identified which may be analogous to the bright carbon star population recently found in the Magellanic Clouds. While the similarity of Sextans A's luminosity function with those of the LMC and the Milky Way is in keeping with a universal luminosity function, stellar mass function and birthrate resemble those of the SMC. Per unit gas mass, Sextans A has a birthrate almost identical to the SMC, suggesting that the mean age of stars in Sextans A is significantly less than of those in the Magellanic Clouds.

    Description: During their search for faint planetary nebulae on the Palomar Sky Survey, Ellis, Grayson, and Bond (1984) found three low-surface-brightness objects which they speculated were dwarf galaxies. Deep CCD observations of these objects indicate that one, EGB 04 27+63 is a previously uncataloged dwarf irregular galaxy which is partially resolved into stars. The other two objects appear to be faint diffuse nebulae: perhaps gaseous or reflection nebulae.

    Description: A photographic survey for faint clusters of galaxies has been carried out with fine-grained photographic emulsions using the 1.2 m Schmidt and 5 m Hale telescopes, as well as the 4 m Mayall telescope. A total of 418 clusters have been found with redshifts mostly in the range from 0.15 to 0.92. The survey was planned to minimize distance-dependent selection effects in the resulting catalog. In areas of sky where the deepest search was made, the sample is complete to about z = 0.50; there are 11 clusters per square degree at this limit. At a redshift of 1.0 there should be 63 or 45 clusters per square degree depending on whether q0 is 0.0 or 0.5, provided there is no evolution.

    Description: Observations obtained over a period of five years of the resolved stars in the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy (DDO 216) have been searched for variable stars. Thirty-one variables were found, and periods established for 12. Two of these variable stars are clearly eclipsing variables, seven are very likely Cepheid variables, and the remaining three are probable Cepheids. The period-luminosity relation for the Cepheids indicates a distance modulus for Pegasus of m - M = 26.22 + or - 0.20. This places Pegasus very near the zero-velocity surface of the Local Group.
