    Description: Photoelectric observations of the asteroid 55 Pandora were carried out in Feb. - Mar. 1989 (6 nights) in range of phase angles Delta alpha = (2.5 - 1.4) deg, and in Sep. - Nov. 1991 (15 nights) Delta alpha = (0.5 - 16.3) deg. Average amplitudes of lightcurves in these oppositions are 0.22 m and 0.10 m, respectively. The value of linear phase coefficients and the absence of spike-effect of alpha less than 2 deg indicate that Pandora is a typical M-asteroid and the high albedo measured by IRAS-satellite is not real.

    Description: Photoelectric lightcurve observations in the V band, together with estimates of the mean and maximum reduced magnitudes, are presented for 59 different asteroids; 15 new or significantly revised periods are reported. While fits are generally good for objects with moderate phase-relation slope, poor quality fits remain among the highest and lowest albedo objects studied in virtue of their respectively shallow and steep sloping-phase curves.

    Description: Over 20 asteroids were observed photometrically for period determinations and phase relation studies. These included 1036 Ganymed, the largest Mars-crossing asteroid known, and 1627 Ivar, an earth-approaching asteroid which is a potential space mission target. Doppler images of P/Halley from TMO were obtained. Initial testing of the JPL/TMO CCD camera system has supported by imaging P/Giacobini-Zinner and P/Halley.

    Description: This paper describes the observation and analysis of field stars, undertaken as a step toward understanding the photometric properties of the filters and CCDs aboard the Wide-Field/Planetary Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope. Ground-based CCD observations have been made simulating 15 of the most important WF/PC passbands. Data are presented here for an equatorial network of stars including many UBVRI standards and some spectrophotometric standards. They serve to establish a photometric system that will be used in the calibration of in-flight data and that is useful for the calibration of other ground-based data. Transformations between WF/PC and other photometric systems are discussed, as well as the effects of interstellar absorption and atmospheric extinction on data in the WF/PC system. Synthetic photometry has been used as an aid in the data analysis and is described.

    Description: The use of light curves to characterize the dynamics of asteroids is discussed in a review of recent statistical and theoretical investigations. The summary, detailed, and bibliographic lists comprising the IAU light-curve data set are briefly characterized, and studies of rotation rates, shapes and pole positions, and phase relations are surveyed. Rotation-rate differences among the taxonomic classes and with asteroid size are noted, along with a wide dispersion of rotation rates in objects smaller than about 100 km.

    Description: The Voyager IR investigation is described, which uses a Michelson interferometer in the 180-2500/cm range, and a single-channel radiometer for the visible and near-IR, sharing a 50-cm diameter telescope. Emphasis is placed on the differences between the Voyager and the previous designs, including reductions in the field of view and in the noise equivalent spectral radiance of the instrument. Attention is given to the optical layout, the electronics module, power supply placement, thermal control heaters and flash heaters, data reduction, and calibration. A sample spectrum of Jupiter is also discussed.

    Description: The number of astronomers has grown by about 40 percent over the past decade. The number of astronomers with jobs in industry, or with long-term, non-tenured, jobs has increased dramatically compared with traditional faculty positions. The increase in the number of astronomers and the declining share of the NSF budget going to astronomy has led to extreme difficulties in the NSF grant program and in support of the National Observatories. In 1989, direct NASA support of astronomers through the grants program exceeds that of NSF, although the total of the NSF grants program over decade far exceeds that of NASA. Access to major new telescopes will be important issue for the 1990s. US astronomers, who once had a monopoly on telescopes larger than 3 meters, will, by the year 2000, have access to just half of the world's optical telescope area.

    Description: Photoelectric light curves provide fundamental information about asteroids: rotation periods, pole orientations, shapes, and phase relations, which yield some information about the surface physical properties. This task is to carry on a program of such observations to increase the overall data base, obtain data on newly discovered asteroids, and to observe asteroids which are the subject of other complementary observations, such as occultations, radar, and infrared.

    Description: The Table Mountain Observatory (TMO) facilities include well equipped 24 inch and 16 inch telescopes with a 40 inch telescope (owned by Pomona College) due for completion during FY 89. This proposal is to provide operational support (equipment maintenance, setup, and observing assistnce) at TMO to other programs. The program currently most heavily supported by this grant is the asteroid photometry program directed by A. W. Harris. During 1987, about 20 asteroids were observed, including a near-earth asteroid, 1951 Midas. The photometric observations are used to derive rotation periods, estimate shapes and pole orientations, and to define the phase relations of asteroids. The E class asteroid 64 Angelina was observed, and showed the same opposition spike observed of 44 Jysa, last year. Comet observations are made with the narrow band camera system of David Rees, University College London. Observational support and training was provided to students and faculty from Claremont Colleges for variable star observing programs. Researchers propose to continue the asteroid program, with emphasis on measuring phase relations of low and high albedo asteroids at very low phase angles, and supporting collaborative studies of asteroid shapes.
