    Description: While current VLBI observations are limited in their resolution by the earth diameter magnitude, which is the largest antenna separation available, as well as in their information content, because of the small number of antennas in use at a given time, the extension of VLBI to include one or more antennas in space will relieve both constraints and help to map distant radio sources with the highest possible resolution. Attention is given to the implementation of such an orbital VLBI system extension through (1) a Shuttle-launch mission, (2) a six-month to one-year near earth orbit mission based on a space platform associated with the Space Station, (3) a large orbit free flyer platform mission of more than 2-year duration, and (4) lunar and/or deep space orbits, aimed at reaching the resolution limits set by interstellar scattering.

    Description: The angular resolution of radio maps made by earth-based VLBI observations can be exceeded by placing at least one element of a VLBI array into earth orbit. A VLBI observatory in space can offer the additional advantages of increased sky coverage, higher density sampling of Fourier components, and rapid mapping of objects whose structure changes in less than a day. This paper explores the future of this technique.

    Description: Very high angular resolution can be achieved in optical and radio astronomy through interferometers in space. Evolutionary approaches and required technological advances are presented. In the optical region a phase-coherent array, (COSMIC) starting as a four-element linear array is discussed. Combining several modules results in greatly improved resolution with a goal of combining images to obtain a single field of view with 0.004 arcsecond resolution. The angular resolution, detail and temporal coverage of radio maps obtained by ground-based Very Long Interferometry (VLBI) can be greatly improved by placing one of the stations in earth orbit. An evolutionary program leading to a large aperture VLBI observatory in space is discussed.

    Description: The gain in interferometric resolution of extragalactic sources at radio frequencies which can be achieved by placing a very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) antenna in space is quantitatively described and a VLBI demonstration experiment using a large deployable antenna, which if realized could be a very acceptable first venture for VLBI in space is discussed. A tutorial on VLBI, a summary of the technology available for the experiment, and a preliminary mission scenario are included.
