    Description: Ultraviolet spectra of three beta Cep variables and a nonvariable star of similar spectral type were observed by the ultraviolet spectrometer on Mariner 9. A significant light variation at 1400 A may have been detected for beta Cep. The variable stars have mean ultraviolet spectra similar to that of the nonvariable star and do not show any significant short-period spectral variations.

    Description: Since extreme Population I dominates three rocketborne telescope UV images of the Sc I galaxy NGC 5457, the delineation of the spiral structure is sharper than that of ground photographs. The UV pictures, in which the H II regions appear as reflection nebulae and illumine the nearby dust, reveal faint arms which, although correlated with the 21 cm H I radiograph, are only marginally detectable on deep visual photographs. The surface brightness of the arms is explainable in terms of UV light scattering off dust from hot stars and bright H II regions, in which case the dust would have extinction properties and a dust-to-gas ratio similar to that in the solar neighborhood and would in addition suggest that the NGC 5457 outer arm metal content is similar to that of the galaxy.

    Description: A large fraction of astronomical observations in the UV are affected by extinction due to interstellar dust in the line of sight. The shape of the extinction curve varies markedly around the sky, especially in regions of nebulosity such as the Orion Nebula. The variations of the shape provide clues to the nature of the dust. Additional insight into the physical properties of dust can be obtained from reflected UV starlight as observed in NGC7023 by IUE and in the faint arms of M101 as photographed by a sounding rocket.

    Description: An ultraviolet spectrum of NGC 7027, obtained with a rocket-borne telescope, is analyzed. Absolute values are presented for the observed fluxes, and upper limits are given for the strongest predicted lines that were not observed. The results are corrected for interstellar extinction using the observed and calculated line ratios between H-beta and the hydrogenic recombination line of He II at 1640 A. The corrected C IV resonance line at 1549 A is found to be in good agreement with the intensity calculated from models, but the intercombination line of C III at 1909 A is found to be too bright by a factor of 10. This discrepancy is reduced to a factor of 4 by taking dielectric recombination into account and is eliminated by using the solar carbon abundance, which implies attenuation in the C IV line. It is shown that no appreciable number of absorbing grains can exist in the C IV-producing region of the nebula since the optical depth is of the order of 10,000 at the line center.

    Description: The absolute flux measurements in the rocket ultraviolet made by Bohlin, Frimout, and Lillie (BFL) are revised using a more correct treatment of the air extinction that enters the air calibration of their instrument. The absorption by molecular oxygen and ozone, Rayleigh scattering, and extinction by aerosols is tabulated for general use in ultraviolet calibrations performed in air. The revised absolute flux of Eta UMa and final fluxes for Alpha Lyr and Zeta Oph are presented in the 1750 A-3350 A region. The absolute flux of the star Eta UMa (B3 V) is compared to four other independent determinations in the 1200 A-3400 A region and a maximum difference of 35% is found near 1500 A between the OAO-2 and Apollo 17 fluxes. Longward of 1700 A the typical scatter in the different determinations is only plus or minus 5%. The rocket measurements of BFL, the ANS and TD-1 satellite data, and the Apollo 17 data are compared to the ultraviolet fluxes from the OAO-2, demonstrating a photometric reproducibility of about plus or minus 3%. Therefore, all four sets of spectrophotometry can be reduced to a common absolute scale.

    Description: An algorithm is presented for correcting IUE low resolution spectral images obtained with the SWP camera for some of the non-linearity effects reported by Bohlin et al. (1980). The non-linearity problem, which affects SWP images processed at Goddard Space Flight Center in the period May 22, 1978 to July 7, 1979 and at VILSPA in the period June 14, 1978 to August 6, 1979, was essentially due to the use of an Intensity Transfer Function (ITF) that erroneously included a blank image in the 20 percent exposure level. The correction algorithm described here was adopted by the three IUE Agencies in November 1979 as being suitable for most IUE users. It has the advantages to be applicable to any kind of low resolution SWP spectra, to introduce errors which are usually less than the intrinsic photometric errors, and to be of simple application. The results obtained by applying the method to a representative set of spectra of both point and extended sources are reported. In addition, a new evaluation of linearity and reproducibility of the SWP spectral data is provided, based on the improved ITF.

    Description: Improvements are made on IUE data reduction using corrected reseau positions and dispersion constants for temperature variations and secular effects. Models describing the motion of the high dispersion spectral format as a function of THDA alone reduce the scatter in the predicted position of a given wavelength, and scatter is further reduced when a linear dependence on time is also allowed. A correction technique is presented for early data which reduces errors in wavelength assignments from over 30 km/s to less than 3 km/s in high dispersion. The reseau temperature correction helps locate the minimum background signal, centered between the echelle orders. The residual uncertainty of 2 km/s for SWP and 2.7 km/s for LWR makes the wavelength accuracy of time and temperature corrected IUE spectra comparable to that of temperature corrected data from the Copernicus satellite.

    Description: It is pointed out that ultraviolet imagery of spiral galaxies is a sensitive probe of the large-scale morphology of the star-forming regions and the associated interstellar dust. A rocket-borne Ritchey-Chretien telescope was employed to obtain three ultraviolet images of the Sc 1 galaxy M101 (NGC 5457). The present investigation is concerned with the procedures for reduction and absolute calibration of the obtained images and an analysis in terms of discrete sources. Attention is also given to the radial variation and the azimuthal variation of disk and arms. It is found that the emission from M101 in the UV bandpass is dominated by extreme Population I, in the form of discrete OB/H II complexes.

    Description: A telescope-spectrometer on the Copernicus spacecraft made possible the measurement of many ultraviolet absorption lines produced by the interstellar gas. The present survey provides data on ultraviolet absorption lines in the spectra of 88 early-type stars. The stars observed are divided into four classes, including reddened stars, unreddened bright stars, moderately reddened bright stars, and unreddened and moderately reddened faint stars. Data are presented for equivalent width, W, radial velocity V, and rms line width, D, taking into account some 10 to 20 lines of N I, O I, Si II, P II, S II, Cl I, Cl II, Mn II, Fe II, Ni II, Cu II, and H2. The data are based on multiple scans for each line. Attention is given to details of observations, the data reduction procedure, and the computation of equivalent width, mean velocity, and velocity dispersion.
