    Description: Theoretical electron density sensitive emission-line ratios, determined using electron impact excitation rates calculated with the R-matrix code, are presented for R = I(2s(sup 2) (1)S-2s2p 3P(sub 2))/I(2s(sup 2) (1)S-2s2p 3P(sub 1) = 1(1483 A)/I(1486 A) in N IV. These are found to be up to an order of magnitude different from those deduced by previous authors, principally due to the inclusion of excitation rates for transitions among the 2s2p (3)p fine-structure levels. The observed values of R for several planetary nebulae, symbiotic stars and the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant, measured from spectra obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite and the Hopkins Ultraviolet Explorer (HUT), lead to electron densities which are in excellent agreement with those deduced from line ratios in other species. This provides observational support for the accuracy of the atomic data adopted in the present calculations.

    Description: We present new optical and near-infrared images of the hydrogen-poor planetary nebula Abell 30 and produce detailed models that account for the major observed morphological and IR properties. By imaging the nebula in the K band, we confirm the presence of hot dust in an expanding equatorial ring of H-poor gas. No emission was detected from the H-poor polar knots, suggesting a dust deficiency htere relative to the equatorial ring. The near-IR emission is attributed to small carbonaceous dust grains which are stochastically heated by stellar ultraviolet photons. Using an adaptive version of a matrix method devised by Guhathakurta & Draine (1989) to model stochastic heating, we find that the near-IR spectrum observed by Dinerstein & Lester (1984) requires the presence of dust grains down to approximately 0.0007 microns in radius. This minimum grain radius is in excellent agreement with our calculations of the grain destruction by energetic stellar UV photons: we find that carbon clusters with less than approximately 140 atoms (0.0007 microns in radius) are destroyed by stellar UV photons in approximately 1000 yr, the kinematic age of H-poor ejecta. Modeling of the far-IR dust emission implies that the bulk of the dust mass in A30 must reside at distances several times greater than the distance of the equatorial ring from the central star. This spatial dust distribution is attributed to the interaction of the stellar wind with the inhomogeneous H-poor ejecta. Most of the H-poor gas and dust has been apparently carried outward by the stellar wind, leaving behing dense, H-poor knots with prominent wind-blown tails in the equatorial ring and in the polar knots. This picture is supported by the presence of a stellar wind-blown bubble within the H-rich envelope in our optical images.

    Description: This paper discusses the Astro, a UV and X-ray observatory designed for the Space Shuttle Columbia, which is scheduled for the May 7, 1990 launch. Astro's four telescopes and their operation are described. They are the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment, the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, and the Broad Band X-ray Telescope. Attention is also given to the mission plan and to the ground operations.

    Description: The IUE spectra of the X-ray transient/X-ray burst source Cen X-4 at three intervals during the peak and decline of the May 1979 transient event were studied. The spectrum is characterized by a blue continuum and strong emission lines of N V lambda 1240, Si IV lambda 1398 and C IV lambda 1550. The origin of these emission components in the context of an X-ray dwarf nova model is investigated. It is suggested that an accretion disk plays a prominent role in the generation of the continuum emission and that X-ray heating of the accretion disk and the companion star may be important in the formation of the emission lines.

    Description: The characteristics of interstellar extinction were studied in the region of the 2175 A feature for lines of sight which appear to exhibit unusually weak ultraviolet extinction. The analysis was based upon a parameterization of the observed extinction via fitting specific mathematical functions in order to determine the position and width of the 2175 A feature. The data are currently being analyzed.

    Description: The IUE observations were used to determine the composition of the ejecta (especially C and Si abundances) and to test models for the ionization and excitation of the ejecta of two oxygen-rich supernova remnants (N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 1E 0102-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud). Time-dependent photoionization by the EUV and X-ray radiation from 1E 0102-7219 can qualitatively explain its UV and optical line emission, but the density and ionization structures are complex and prevent a unique model from being specified. Many model parameters are poorly constrained, including the time dependence and shape of the ionizing spectrum. Moreover, the models presented are not self-consistent in that the volumes and densities of the optically emitting gas imply optical depths of order unity in the EUV, but absorption of the ionizing radiation was ignored. It is possible that these shortcomings reflect a more fundamental limitation of the model assumptions. It is assumed that the electron velocity distribution is Maxwellian and that the energy deposited by photoionization heats the electrons directly. The 500 eV electrons produced by the Auger process may excite or ionize other ions before they slow down enough to share their energy with other electrons. Many of the excitations would produce photons that could ionize lower ionization stages.

    Description: In the brief time since its brightening in 1975, the optical spectrum of HM Sagittae has shown considerable variation in both its general characteristics and relative line intensity ratios. The observations place HM Sagittae in a small class of objects which are thought to be proto-planetary nebulae, of which V 1016 Cygni is the prototype. Attention is given to derived density and temperature, helium abundance and nebular mass, and an evolutionary scenario. The considered observations show a decrease in the intensity of the continuum and a continuation of the trend toward higher excitation in the spectrum of HM Sagittae. Parallels are seen in the development of this object and V 1016 Cygni, with the implication that the trend toward higher excitation is expected to continue.

    Description: Interference filter photographs were used to identify an arc of nebulosity that is coincident with the radio contours of the galactic supernova remnant G 126.2 + 1.6. Spectrophotometry of the filament shows that the emission line spectrum matches the spectra of other galactic supernova remnants. In particular, the arc shows the usual strong SII, and NII emission lines seen in other remnants and unusually strong OII emission as seen in a few remnants. The spectrum can be adequately matched by a shock of velocity near 100 km/s in an interstellar cloud of density 3. If the SNR is at a distance of 4.5 kpc as indicated by the radio signal-D relation, then the observed pressure in the filament requires an initial energy near 4 x 10 to the 51st power (d/4.5 kpc) to the 3rd power ergs.

    Description: The molecular clouds of S37, which coincides with a region of visual obscuration, is observed at several molecular transition frequencies and at IR wavelengths in the 2-125 micron range. It is found that the temperature and the column density peak near the reflection nebulae vdB 118 and 119, with line splitting and possible self-absorption being observed near the latter. Although many 2-micron sources are observed in the direction of the cloud, no bright, 10-micron sources are seen, and far-IR emission is found over an extensive region in the cloud. An energetics analysis leads to the prediction of a dust cooling rate consistent with the far-IR observations, which indicate not less than 15,000-35,000 solar luminosities, and more detailed energetics examinations show that the conditions necessary for collision heating of the gas by warm dust exist.
