    Description: Spectra of Cen X-3 during eclipse, in transition out of eclipse, and during several later phases of the binary orbit were obtained from quick look data of the July 16-25, 1975 observation by the Goddard X-ray spectroscopy experiment on OSO-8. In the high state there was no absorption turn over. Pulsations were present at least to 23 keV. The spectrum at the pulse minimum was flatter above 7 keV than that of the pulse peak. In transition out of eclipse Cen X-3 emerged above a small low energy flux seen during eclipse. The observations appear to indicate absorption by cold and ionized matter and the presence of iron in the companion's atmosphere. Decreased intensities were observed at late phases of some binary orbits in some cases corresponding to dips. Absorption appears although the low energy component remains. Variable features may be interpretable as absorption and emission by iron and possibly other trace elements.

    Description: The X-ray binary Her X-1 was observed by the GSFC cosmic X-ray detectors aboard OSO-8 between August 26 and September 3, 1975. The results reported are based on quick look tapes which contain less than 10% of the total time spent on source. Spectra were observed during different phases of the binary period including the anomalous low state (dip) in X-ray intensity. The normal high spectra is well represented by a power law with a short cutoff above approximately 25 keV. A significant and varying enhancement in the intensity around 6.7 keV was observed, suggesting the presence of an iron line. Absorption was seen in the spectrum immediately following eclipse. The dip spectrum is found to be considerably flattened. Also spectra are presented for different phases of the pulse period.

    Description: The cosmic X-ray spectroscopy experiment on OSO-8 will observe seven X-ray binary sources in its first six months of operation. If possible, each of these sources will be observed for one or more binary orbits so that the X-ray spectrum of each object can be observed through all phases of its orbit. For the two pulsing binaries, Her X-1 and Cen X-3, spectral variations over the pulse period will be studied. Simultaneous radio observations of Cyg X-1 and Cyg X-3 will search for any correlation between radio and X-ray emission. During the first year of operation, the detectors will observe over 50% of the known X-ray sources.

    Description: Brightness and polarization distributions over several galactic supernova remnants have been observed at a wavelength of 6 cm. These observations have confirmed the nonthermal nature of most of the observed sources. It is suggested, however, that the objects G33.1-0.1 (KES 78), G35.6-0.0, G37.6-0.1, G37.7+0.1, and G37.9-0.4 are thermal. The results of these observations are presented in the form of total intensity contour maps with superimposed polarization vectors.

    Description: The solid-state spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory and the GSFC cosmic X-ray spectrometer on OSO 8 have observed the X-ray spectrum of SN 1006. The data can be well represented by a power-law model with alpha = 1.2, similar to the spectrum of the Crab Nebula. This is in contrast to the radio and X-ray maps of SN 1006 which show a shell structure more typical of SNR with thermal X-ray emission. The X-ray spectrum is suggestive of nonthermal synchrotron emission, raising the possibility that the remnant of SN 1006 contains a source of relativistic electrons.

    Description: A summary is presented of results from the Solid State Spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory for seven RS CVn binaries. The spectra of all require two emission components, evidenced by line emission characteristics of plasma at 4-million to 8-million K and bremsstrahlung characteristic of 20-million to 100-million K. The data are interpreted in terms of magnetic coronal loops similar to those seen on the sun, although with different characteristic parameters. The emission regions could be defined by separate magnetic structures. For pressures less than 10 dynes/sq cm the low temperature plasma would be confined within the stellar radii, while the high temperature plasma would, for the synchronous, close binaries, fill the binary orbits. However, for loop pressures exceeding 100 dynes sq cm, the high temperature components would also be confined to within the stellar radii, in loops covering only small fractions of the stellar surfaces. While the radio properties and the occurrence of X-ray flares suggest the larger emission regions, the observations of time variations leave the ambiguity unresolved.

    Description: The Einstein Observatory Imaging Proportional Counter has been used to search for X-ray emission from nine nearby historical novae. Six of the novae have been detected with estimated X-ray intensities between 0.1 and 4 keV of 10 to the -13th to 10 to the -11th erg/sq cm-sec, comparable to the intensities of previously detected cataclysmic variables. The X-ray intensity of one of the novae, V603 Aql, varies over times of several hundred seconds. The data suggest a correlation between the decay rate of the historical outburst and the current X-ray luminosity. Alternatively, the X-ray luminosity may be related to the inclination of the binary system.

    Description: An eclipsing X-ray binary pulsator consistent with the location of A1540-53 has been observed. The source pulse period was 528.93 + or - 0.10 s. The binary nature is confirmed by a Doppler curve for the pulsation period. The eclipse angle of 30.5 + or - 3 deg and the 4-hour transition to and from eclipse suggest an early-type giant or supergiant primary star.

    Description: The X-ray binary Cyg X-3 has been observed on three occasions during 1975 and 1976 by the GSFC Cosmic X-Ray Spectroscopy Experiment on OSO 8. The X-ray spectra from all three observations can be represented by power-law continua with strong iron line emission. Comparisons of spectra taken within the same observation at various phases of the 4.8 hour period reveal a relative excess of low-energy X-ray emission near zero phase (i.e., the minimum) of the 4.8 hour modulation. In addition, the centroid of the line emission is observed to vary in phase with the 4.8 hour cycle. The possibility of persistent thermal X-ray emission from material surrounding the binary system is introduced in an effort to account for the observed effects.

    Description: Results are presented for a study of the X-ray emission from a small portion of the galactic plane near galactic longitude 260 deg. This region contains at least six low-luminosity X-ray sources within about 10 deg of PSR 0833-45, which is near the center of the Gum nebula. The X-ray source 4U 0833-45, associated with the Vela pulsar, is observed at twice its 4U catalog intensity. The lack of X-ray pulsations at the pulsar period (greater than 99% nonpulsed), the nonthermal power-law spectrum, and models of the X-ray source distribution in this region suggest that a large fraction of the X-rays come from an extended source about 1 deg of arc in radius. The observation of a high-temperature (effective temperature at least 100 million K) spectrum in a field of view containing only Puppis A among known sources has led to the discovery of new OSO 8 source, OS 0752-39. Other spectra from this region are discussed.
