    Description: The angular accuracy of gamma-ray detectors is intrinsically limited by the physical processes involved in photon detection. Although a number of pointlike sources were detected by the COS B satellite, only two have been unambiguously identified by time signature with counterparts at longer wavelengths. By taking advantage of the extended longitudinal structure of VHE gamma-ray showers, measurements in the TeV energy range can pinpoint source coordinates to arcminute accuracy. This has now been demonstrated with new data analysis procedures applied to observations of the Crab Nebula using Cherenkov air shower imaging techniques. With two telescopes in coincidence, the individual event circular probable error will be 0.13 deg. The half-cone angle of the field of view is effectively 1 deg.

    Description: The data concerning low resolution airborne spectra from 5 to 8 microns available for a sample of 40 sources selected from the Infrared Astronomy Satellite low resolution spectral Atlas with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features, are discussed. A new emission band at 5.2 microns, previously predicted for PAHs, was found in 33 sources; it also correlates with the 7.7 microns band. This extends the spectrum of narrow observed PAH features to 3.3, 5.2, 5.6, 6.2, 6.9, 7.7, 8.7, 11.3, and 12.7 microns. From the data the relative strengths of most of these bands are defined in three separate nebular environments: planetaries, H II regions, and reflection nebulae. The differences in the PAHs spectra in those environments are analyzed.

    Description: Comet Bradfield (1979), discovered shortly after perihelion on Christmas day 1979, is characterized by a retrograde orbit of period approximately equal to 250 yr. This orbit was very favorable for observation by the IUE satellite, and the first observations, the preliminary results of which are reported here, were made on 10 and 11 January 1980. Previously, comprehensive vacuum UV cometary spectra were available only for Comet West (1976VI) from rocket observations and Comet Seargent (1978m) with IUE, hence three comets have now been observed in the wavelength region where most of the major constituents are detectable spectroscopically. The UV spectra of these comets are remarkably similar, despite large differences between them in the gas-to-dust ratio and the different heliocentric distances at which the observations were made, and although the statistical basis is still very small, the implication for cosmogony is that nearly all comets have the same primary composition and origin.

    Description: We report observations of the ionization state of anomalous cosmic-ray (ACR) nitrogen, oxygen, and neon during the period 1992 October to 1993 May, carried out with instrumentation on the Solar, Anomalous & Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX) spacecraft. The low-altitude (510 x 675 km) and high-inclination (82 deg) orbit enables SAMPEX to sample the interplanetary ACR fluxes on each polar pass and then to observe the cutoff of these fluxes by the geomagnetic field at lower latitudes. The arrival time and direction of each ion is recorded by the instruments, allowing detailed calculations of the particle's trajectory through the Earth's magnetic field and thereby placing upper limits on the ionization state of the particles. We find (a) that ACR nitrogen, oxygen, and neon each contain singly ionized particles and (b) that ACR oxygen is predominantly singly ionized with an upper limit of 10% for higher ionization states. These ionization states confirm theories of ACR origin as neutral interstellar material that is singly ionized near the Sun by UV or charge exchange with the solar wind, and is subsequently accelerated in the outer heliosphere.

    Description: We report extensive optical photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia supernova 1989B. Maximum light in B occurred approximately seven days after discovery on JD 2447565.3 +/- 1.0 (1989 February 7.8 +/- 1.0) at a magnitude of 12.34 +/- 0.05. The UBV light curves of this supernova were very similar to those of other well observed Type Ia events such as SN 1981B and SN 1980N. From a comparison of the UBVRIJHK photometry, we derive an extinction for SN 1989B of E(B-V) = 0.37 +/- 0.03 mags relative to the unobscured Type Ia SN 1980N. The properties of the dust responsible for the reddening of SN 1989B appear to have been similar to those of normal dust in the Milky Way. In particular, we find no evidence for an unusually low value of the ratio of the total to selective absorption. We derive a distance modulus of delta mu(sub 0) = -1.62 +/- 0.03 mag relative to the Type Ia SN 1980N. We present optical spectra which provide essentially continuous coverage of the spectral evolution of SN 1989B over the first month following B maximum. These data show the transition from the maximum-light spectrum, in which lines of elements such as Ca, Si, S, Mg, and O are most prominent, to the Fe-dominated spectrum observed a few weeks after maximum. This transition occurred quite smoothly over a two-week period following B maximum. Comparison of the spectra of SN 1989B with data for two other well observed Type Ia supernovae -- 1981B and 1986G -- reveals subtle differences in the relative strengths of the S II and Si II absorption lines at maximum light. However, these differences disappeared within a week or so after maximum with the onset of the Fe-dominated phase.

    Description: The moon offers particular advantages for interferometry, including a vacuum environment, a large stable base on which to assemble multi-kilometer baselines, and a cold nighttime temperature to allow for passive cooling of optics for high IR sensitivity. A baseline design for a Lunar Optical Interferometer (LOI) which exploits these features is presented. The instrument operates in the visible to mid-IL region, and is designed for both astrometry and synthesis imaging. The design uses a Y-shaped array of 12 siderostats, with maximum arm lengths of about 1 km. The inner siderostats are monitored in three dimensions from a central laser metrology structure to allow for high precision astrometry. The outer siderostats, used primarily for synthesis imaging, exploit the availability of bright reference stars in order to determine the instrument geometry. The path delay function is partitioned into coarse and fine components, the former accomplished with switched banks of range mirrors monitored with an absolute laser metrology system, and the latter with a short cat's eye delay line. The back end of the instrument is modular, allowing for beam combiners for astrometry, visible and IR synthesis imaging, and direct planet detection. With 1 m apertures, the instrument will have a point-source imaging sensitivity of about 29 mag; with the laser metrology system, astrometry at the microarcsecond level will be possible.

    Description: We report the detection in the circumstellar envelope IRC+10216 of millimeter lines of the rare isotopomers (25)MgNC and (26)MgNC, as well as of a line at 234433 MHz, which could be the J= 7-6 transition of (26)AlF (an alternate, although less likely identified would be the J= 9-8 transition of NaF). The derived Mg-24:Mg-25:Mg-26 isotopic abundance ratios (78 : 11+/- 1 : 11 +/-1) are consistent with the solar system values (79.0:10.0:11.0), following Anders & Grevesse 1989). According to new calculations of evolutionary models of 3 solar mass and 5 solar mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, these ratios and the previously measured N, O and Si isotopic ratios imply that the central star had an initial mass 3 solar mass (less than or equal to M(sub *, ini) less than 5 solar mass and has already experienced many 3rd dredge-up events. From this, it can be predicted that the Al-26/Al-27 isotopics ratio lies between 0.01 and 0.08; in fact, the value derived in the case that U234433 arises from (26)AlF is Al-26/Al-27 = 0.04. The identification of the (25)MgNC and (26)MgNC lines was made possible by ab-initio quantum mechanical calculations of the molecule geometrical structure. It was confirmed through millimeter-wave laboratory measurements. The quantum mechanical calculations are briefly described and the laboratory results presented in some detail. The rotation constants B, D, H and the spin-rotation constant gamma of (25)MgNC and (26)MgNC are determined from a fit of laboratory and astronomical data.

    Description: Rosat observations of the DA white dwarf + K2V binary system V471 Tauri, obtained during the sky survey phase of the mission, are presented. A lower amplitude shorter time-scale variability is seen in both the soft X-ray and EUV bands. This is associated with the white dwarf pulsations previously discovered by Exosat and also observed at optical wavelengths. The minimum in the EUV light curve is found to coincide with the maximum in the optical. This direct comparison of the phases of the optical and EUV pulses confirms the prediction made by an earlier indirect comparison and shows conclusively that the V471 Tau oscillations cannot arise from nonradial g-mode pulsations in the white dwarf. They are argued to be caused by rotation of the white dwarf with accretion-darkened magnetic poles. On the basis of the EUV and optical pulse shapes, the accretion geometry is studied, and it is estimated that the rate of accretion onto the white dwarf is about (4-11) x 10 exp -13 solar mass/yr.

    Description: Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of extragalactic radio sources provide the basis for defining an accurate non-rotating reference frame in terms of angular positions of the sources. Measurements of the distance from the Earth to the Moon and to the inner planets provide the basis for defining an inertial planetary ephemeris reference frame. The relative orientation, or frame tie, between these two reference frames is of interest for combining Earth orientation measurements, for comparing Earth orientation results with theories referred to the mean equator and equinox, and for determining the positions of the planets with respect to the extragalactic reference frame. This work presents an indirect determination of the extragalactic-planetary frame tie from a combined reduction of VLBI and Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) observations. For this determination, data acquired by LLR tracking stations since 1969 have been analyzed and combined with 14 years of VLBI data acquired by NASA's Deep Space Network since 1978. The frame tie derived from this joint analysis, with an accuracy of 0.003 sec, is the most accurate determination obtained so far. This result, combined with a determination of the mean ecliptic (defined in the rotating sense), shows that the mean equinox of epoch J2000 is offset from the x-axis of the extragalactic frame adopted by the International Earth Rotation Service for astrometric and geodetic applications by 0.078 sec +/- 0.010 sec along the y-direction and y 0.019 sec +/- 0.001 sec. along the z-direction.

    Description: Using Ulysses radio wave data taken during the 1992 Jupiter encounter, we conclude that there are significant large and small spatial scale azimuthal asymmetries at high latitudes in the Io plasma torus. During a period of time near perijove when the spacecraft motion was predominantly in the azimuthal direction and was relatively fixed in both latitude and radial distance, inferred electron densities depart significantly from the common assumption of longitudinal symmetry. Specifically, electron plasma concentrations near 0 deg system III longitude (and 0400 LT) are greater than those near 180 deg (and 0000 LT). Superposed on this large-scale variation are regularly spaced density depletions, 30-50% in magnitude, and having a spatial periodicity of about 17 deg. Some of these depletions may drive various known radio and plasma wave sources by means of large B parallel electric potentials. The observations are compared with recent models and with the in-situ Voyager observations.
