    Description: As Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system performance and experience in SAR signature evaluation increase, quantitative analysis becomes more and more important. Such analyses require an absolute radiometric calibration of the complete SAR system. To keep the expenditure on calibration of future multichannel and multisensor remote sensing systems (e.g., X-SAR/SIR-C) within a tolerable level, data from different tracks and different sensors (channels) must be cross calibrated. The 1989 joint E-SAR/DC-8 SAR calibration campaign gave a first opportunity for such an experiment, including cross sensor and cross track calibration. A basic requirement for successful cross calibration is the stability of the SAR systems. The calibration parameters derived from different tracks and the polarimetric properties of the uncalibrated data are used to describe this stability. Quality criteria for a successful cross calibration are the agreement of alpha degree values and the consistency of radar cross sections of equally sized corner reflectors. Channel imbalance and cross talk provide additional quality in case of the polarimetric DC-8 SAR.

    Description: Measurements of the spatial distribution of 100 micrometers emission are presented for NGC 1275, the central galaxy in the Perseus cluster. The emission is clearly resolved on a kiloparsec level, and has the same flux density as seen by IRAS at an epoch when the nonthermal emission was a factor of 10 higher. This emission which traces the greater part of the luminosity of this galaxy, is thus identified as thermal emission from dust. The emission appears to be distributed more nearly like the low-velocity H-alpha filaments in the core of this galaxy than the starlight, extended nonthermal radio, X-ray emission, or high velocity gas. While the dust might be heated by a star-formation region that is fed by the cooling flow in this cluster, the intracluster gas also appears to be energetically capable of this as well, in which case the dust would be, at least at the present time, the dominant cooling mechanism for the hot gas. The large quantity of dust in NGC 1275 is unlikely to have been created within the galaxy, or in the cooling flow, but was probably accreted from a recent galactic interloper.

    Description: The J = 0 left arrow 1 fine-structure transition in atomic sulfur (S I) in its ground (3)P state has been detected in the laboratory by far-infrared laser magnetic resonance. The fine-structure interval has been measured accurately as 5,322,492.9 +/- 2.8 MHz which corresponds to a wavelength of 56.325572 +/- 0.000030 micrometers.
