Notes: Isomeric cyclodiphosphazane selenides, R(X)P(NBu1)2P(Y)R (R=OMe or NMe2, X=Se, Y=lone pair; R=OMe or NMe2, X=Y=Se) display large differences (34-122 ppm) in 77Se chemical shift. The 77Se shifts of these and related amino derivatives are well to low field of the 77Se shifts of analogous acyclic phosphorus selenides.

Notes: The Wurtz-type coupling of a number of representative classes of substituted dichlorosilane monomers was investigated in considerable detail. Low temperature polymerization techniques, including ultrasonic activation, were also studied. Similarly, the effect of dipolar additives on the polymerization process was examined. The conclusions drawn from these studies provide some insight into the selection of useful polymerization conditions for the conversion of various monomer types into linear high polymers.

Notes: A simple 13C-NMR method for the quantitative determination of polyflavonoid tannin characteristics was developed. The system is effective for use on concentrated (25-50%) solutions of natural and modified tannins. It allows the determination of the average degree of polymerization (DPn) of the polyflavonoid, resorcinol vs. phloroglucinol proportion of the A-ring and catechol vs. pyrogallol proportion of the B-ring. The results obtained are consistent with existing data determined by other techniques. The method was also tried with tannin extract that was modified to form thermosetting adhesive intermediates, and with tannin modified by sulfonation, a common commercial modification for these materials. The results were again consistent with what was expected. The method affords the possibility to follow by a simple technique the variations in DPn and MM̄n (number-average molecular weight) induced by chemical modifications of polyflavonoid tannin extracts and thus to correlate them with relevant structural modifications affecting these parameters. The method is not capable of distinguishing the relative proportions of the four important flavonoid units present in commercial polymeric tannin extract. It can only distinguish the relative proportions of (i) (procyanidins + prodelphinidins) vs. (profisetinidins + prorobinetinidins) and (ii) (prorobinetinidins + prodelphinidins) vs. (profisetinidins + procyanidins). © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The crystal orientation distribution in injection-molded bars made from several polypropylene compounds has been investigated using pole figure analysis. The fillers used were glass fibers, chalk, and talc, and some compounds contained one filler and others contained glass fibers plus one or both of the others. All compounds showed strong orientation in the skin with the b-axis of the monoclinic crystals lying preferentially normal to the flow direction and in many cases parallel to the normal to the bar face. This normal direction orientation was very strong in compounds containing talc and is probably caused by crystals forming with their (010) planes on the talc platelet faces, which align themselves parallel to the mold face. Strong orientation persists into the interior of the moldings containing talc, whereas in the other compounds, the orientation at intermediate depths is much less pronounced than in the skin. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: We are conducting a search for emission-line objects at large redshifts, ostensibly young and forming galaxies. Our method is to search for strong line emission, in particular Ly-alpha, using two techniques: a direct, narrow-band imaging search using a Fabry-Perot interferometer; and a serendipitous long-slit spectroscopic search. Assuming that none of the faint candidates found so far are actually primeval galaxies, we can set the strongest limits to date on the surface density of Ly-alpha-luminous primeval galaxies on the sky. Some of the faint emission line galaxies detected in our survey at z roughly 0.5 - 1 may be representative of the faint blue galaxy population detected in deep continuum imaging surveys.

Description: Preliminary data are given for the SAS-2 high energy galactic gamma ray observation. These data include both latitude and longitude distributions. The longitude distribution shows a high density region. The latitude distributions toward the center and the anti-center are markedly different, the former showing a two-component structure of half-widths of approximately 3 and 6 deg. The energy spectrum in the range 35 to 200 MeV is hard, consistent with cosmic ray interactions with interstellar matter, including neutral pions decay and emission from energetic electron interactions. The data is consistent with an interpretation in terms of the confinement of the cosmic rays in the spiral arms.

Description: Spectrophotometric scans were obtained at 8 A resolution from 3295 to 8880 A on twenty nights before, during, and after the recent eclipse of epsilon Aurigae, beginning with a pre-eclipse observation on 5 March 1982 U.T. The observations were reduced to absolute flux using the standard stars 109 Vir or xi(2) Ceti. The data confirm that the eclipse is essentially gray over the entire visible spectrum, as others have noted from broadband photometry. High resolution echellograms (450 to 6700 A) made through mid-eclipse and the scans show changes in the equivalent widths of H alpha, Na D, and O I as large as a factor of two.

Description: UBV photometric observations of the M asteroid 69 Hesperia, obtained using single-channel photometers on the 31-in. and 42-in. reflectors at Lowell Observatory and on the 24-in. reflector at Mauna Kea Observatory during the apparition of August-November 1977, are reported. The data are presented in tables and graphs and analyzed. Findings presented include minimal temporal or phase-angle-dependent light-curve fluctuations, evidence for large-scale albedo variegation of a few percent, synodic rotation period 5.65537 + or - 0.00064 h, zero-phase color indices B-V = 0.68 mag and U-B = 0.24 mag, B-V phase reddening 0.003 mag/deg, and absolute zero-phase primary maximum magnitude V = 7.04.

Description: New absolute spectrophotometry of Uranus between 3295 A and 7676 A obtained at spectral resolutions of 4 A and 8 A during its 1981 apparition is reported and compared with previous observations by Younkin (1970) recorded during the 1961-1963 apparitions. Geometric albedos are calculated, and Bond albedos are estimated for both sets of data. An increase in brightness of about 14% and a color change occurred during the interval between the epochs of observation, consistent with the high north-polar haze reported by Price and Franz (1979) and the change in aspect of the planet. An upper limit to the internal heat source is estimated from energy balance considerations.

Description: A scanning spectrometer system which is capable of being flown in high-altitude balloon studies of the earth's atmosphere is presented. The instrument is small, has a large operative wavelength range of 350-1100 nm, high data density, and real-time data telemetry to ground. A computer software package is used to provide a real-time monitor of balloon gondola and instrument performance, with the software reliability enhanced by proof of correctness techniques and exhibiting the high degree of reliability necessary for the monitoring system.
