Notes: Liquid crystalline aromatic monocyanate (M) and dicyanates (D1 and D2) with trans-stilbene (—Ph—CH=CH—Ph—) structure were synthesized and their cyclotrimerization reactions were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy. Monocyanate M underwent cyclotrimerization to yield a trimerized material with discotic properties. Dicyanate D2 and its cured product failed to exhibit any mesophase. In contrast, polycyclotrimerization of dicyanate D1 obtained a liquid crystalline thermoset with its schlieren texture prolonged over a wide temperature range. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Polycyclotrimerization of a flexible aromatic dicyanate with a Schiff base structure was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The study on dynamic DSC evaluated an apparent activation energy (Ea) of 75.8 kJ/mol and autocatalytic first-order kinetics with rate expression Af(α) = 1.96 X 105 (1 + 4.39 α) (1 - α) min-1. The kinetic feature can be explained by a proposed mechanism consisting of hydroxyl-catalyzed and autocatalytic paths. The lower value of Ea compared with other aromatic dicyanates is due to the electron-withdrawing linkage of the inherent imine ( - CH=N) structure. The kinetic feature is affected by the content of the residual impurities (e.g., phenols or absorbed water) in the corresponding sample. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: Monitoring global agricultural crop conditions during the growing season and estimating potential seasonal production are critically important for market development of US. agricultural products and for global food security. The Goddard Space Flight Center Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GES DISC DAAC) is developing an Agricultural Information System (AIS), evolved from an existing TRMM Online Visualization and Analysis System (TOVAS), which will operationally provide satellite remote sensing data products (e.g., rainfall) and services. The data products will include crop condition and yield prediction maps, generated from a crop growth model with satellite data inputs, in collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service. The AIS will enable the remote, interoperable access to distributed data, by using the GrADS-DODS Server (GDS) and by being compliant with Open GIS Consortium standards. Users will be able to download individual files, perform interactive online analysis, as well as receive operational data flows. AIS outputs will be integrated into existing operational decision support systems for global crop monitoring, such as those of the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service and the U.N. World Food Program.

Notes: The kinetics of the acid hydrolysis of Streptococcus salivarius levan were studied by examining the weight-average molecular weight. The molecular weights were obtained in a continuous manner from light scattering. Two first order reactions were observed: an initial rapid reaction in competition with a slower reaction.Activation energies, activation entropies, as well as the rate dependence upon substrate and hydrogen ion concentrations were determined. The data seem to indicate that the fast reaction is related to the breaking of branch-point bonds while the slower reaction is related to the breaking of main-chain bonds. Thus, levan hydrolysis seems to be fundamentally different from the completely random degradation of other branched polysaccharides, i.e., dextran, glycogen, and amylopectin.

Notes: The molecular weights and radii of gyration of Streptococcus salivarius levan fractions were obtained from light-scattering measurements in water. Sedimentation coefficients and partial specific volumes of the fractions were also obtained. Double logarithmic plots of [η] versus M̄w and S0 versus M̄w yielded slopes having values of 0.17 and 0.62, respectively. The data and various calculated parameters show that levan from Streptococcus salivarius is highly branched and behaves hydrodynamically as a compact particle of spherical symmetry.

Description / Table of Contents: Electric properties of suspension chlorinated polyethylenes (chlorine content about 73%) are investigated at the frequency of 5 MHz, within the temperature range from 20 to 80°C. The observed relaxations are dependent on the chemical structure of the polymer. In addition, dynamic mechanical properties are studied within a temperature range of -100 to +190°C. No parallelism is noticed between electrical and mechanical properties for this rigid-chain polymer.

Notes: Rapid scanning Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy was used to follow the changes in the population of trans conformers and in the infra-red dichroic functions of the bands characterizing the trans (T) and gauche (G) conformers and the chains in the amorphous regions during stretching of a solution-cast amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film A in the glassy state (67°C) and in the rubbery state (88°C). Stretching at 67°C showed a yield stress peak followed by strain softening in the stress-strain curve. The population of trans conformers in the amorphous and crystalline regions, Ta + Tc, decreased in the pre-yielding region and then increased continuously after yielding. The T conformers formed during post-yield stretching showed high orientation, while the G conformers remained in low degree of orientation. Stretching at 88°C showed no pronounced yield stress peak in the stress-strain curve, and the population of T conformers did not change until the beginning strain-induced crystallization. A solvent-cast PET film annealed at 67°C for 24 h, the film N, showed a sharp and high yield stress peak in the stress-strain curve, and strain-induced crystallization occurred at lower draw ratio as compared to the film A. The film A showed a non-equilibrium high population of Ta conformers, part of which reverted to G conformers during sub-Tg annealing.

Notes: Electrophilic substitution of cyclopropenium ions on aromatic polymers offers a unique opportunity to introduce polar functionality in a controlled manner to conventional, nonpolar polymers. Phenylcyclopropenone substituted polystyrene with predictable chemical composition and narrow molecular weight distribution were prepared. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) analysis demonstrated the absence of branching or crosslinking in these functionalized polystyrenes during electrophilic substitution of the parent homopolymer. 13C-NMR confirmed that the degree of phenylcyclopropenone substitution was both highly efficient and predictable over a broad compositional range. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymers was found to vary linearly with mole % phenylcyclopropenone substitution of the polystyrene. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that thermal decarbonylation of the appended cyclopropenones occurred at approximately 180°C. Weight loss vs. temperature profiles correlated reasonably well with levels of substitution based on 13C-NMR analysis, confirming that decarbonylation of the calculated cyclopropenone substituents was the predominant thermal decomposition pathway. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Poly(t-butyl methacrylate-b-isoprene-b-t-butyl methacrylate) block copolymers have been synthesized in a controlled manner by anionic techniques. The block copolymers demonstrated predictable chemical composition and stereochemistry, and narrow molecular weight distributions. The addition of a polar solvent was required after complete conversion of the diene block in order to preserve the high 1,4 microstructure of the diene phase and to facilitate the efficient crossover to the poly(t-butyl methacrylate) lithium enolate. Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) of the triblock copolymers demonstrated a microphase separated morphology. The glass transition temperatures of the diene phase and acrylic phase were approximately -70 and 120°C, respectively. Cast films of the block copolymers from polar and nonpolar solvents were optically clear and elastic.
