Beschreibung: An unstructured-grid solver for the unsteady Euler equations has been developed for predicting the aerodynamics of helicopter rotor blades. This flow solver is a finite-volume scheme that computes flow quantities at the vertices of the mesh. Special treatments are used for the flux differencing and boundary conditions in order to compute rotary-wing flowfields, and these are detailed in the paper. The unstructured-grid solver permits adaptive grid refinement in order to improve the resolution of flow features such as shocks, rotor wakes and acoustic waves. These capabilities are demonstrated in the paper. Example calculations are presented for two hovering rotors. In both cases, adaptive-grid refinement is used to resolve high gradients near the rotor surface and also to capture the vortical regions in the rotor wake. The computed results show good agreement with experimental results for surface airloads and wake geometry.

Beschreibung: We consider the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element discretization of first order systems of conservation laws derivable as moments of the kinetic Boltzmann equation. This includes well known conservation law systems such as the Euler For the class of first order nonlinear conservation laws equipped with an entropy extension, an energy analysis of the DG method for the Cauchy initial value problem is developed. Using this DG energy analysis, several new variants of existing numerical flux functions are derived and shown to be energy stable.

Beschreibung: This paper considers a family of nonconservative numerical discretizations for conservation laws which retains the correct weak solution behavior in the limit of mesh refinement whenever sufficient order numerical quadrature is used. Our analysis of 2-D discretizations in nonconservative form follows the 1-D analysis of Hou and Le Floch. For a specific family of nonconservative discretizations, it is shown under mild assumptions that the error arising from non-conservation is strictly smaller than the discretization error in the scheme. In the limit of mesh refinement under the same assumptions, solutions are shown to satisfy an entropy inequality. Using results from this analysis, a variant of the "N" (Narrow) residual distribution scheme of van der Weide and Deconinck is developed for first-order systems of conservation laws. The modified form of the N-scheme supplants the usual exact single-state mean-value linearization of flux divergence, typically used for the Euler equations of gasdynamics, by an equivalent integral form on simplex interiors. This integral form is then numerically approximated using an adaptive quadrature procedure. This renders the scheme nonconservative in the sense described earlier so that correct weak solutions are still obtained in the limit of mesh refinement. Consequently, we then show that the modified form of the N-scheme can be easily applied to general (non-simplicial) element shapes and general systems of first-order conservation laws equipped with an entropy inequality where exact mean-value linearization of the flux divergence is not readily obtained, e.g. magnetohydrodynamics, the Euler equations with certain forms of chemistry, etc. Numerical examples of subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows containing discontinuities together with multi-level mesh refinement are provided to verify the analysis.

Beschreibung: Mesh generation procedures as well as solution algorithms for solving the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured meshes are presented. The solution algorithms discussed utilize approximate Riemann solver, upwind differencing to achieve high spatial accuracy. Numerical results for Euler flow over single and multi-element airfoils are presented.

Beschreibung: Navier-Stokes computations of subsonic to transonic flow past airfoils with augmented lift due to rearward jet blowing over a curved trailing edge are presented. The approach uses a spiral grid topology. Solutions are obtained using a Navier-Stokes code which employs an implicit finite difference method, an algebraic turbulence model, and developments which improve stability, convergence, and accuracy. Results are compared against experiments for no jet blowing and moderate jet pressures and demonstrate the capability to compute these complicated flows.

Beschreibung: The role of involutions in energy stability of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of Maxwell and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) systems is examined. Important differences are identified in the symmetrization of the Maxwell and MHD systems that impact the construction of energy stable discretizations using the DG method. Specifically, general sufficient conditions to be imposed on the DG numerical flux and approximation space are given so that energy stability is retained These sufficient conditions reveal the favorable energy consequence of imposing continuity in the normal component of the magnetic induction field at interelement boundaries for MHD discretizations. Counterintuitively, this condition is not required for stability of Maxwell discretizations using the discontinuous Galerkin method.

Beschreibung: The compressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved for hypersonic flow over a three-dimensional ramp with a narrow expansion slot. In a two-dimensional test case, it is shown that a higher order scheme is needed to avoid too much numerical dissipation and hence too much total-pressure loss. The calculation demonstrates the role of viscosity in the expansion process of hypersonic flow through the narrow slot. Cases with various wall temperatures and slot widths are studied. Calculations show that wall cooling reduces the thickness of boundary layer, and hence increases the flow expansion substantially. In the lower portion of the slot, inviscidly, the flow is dominated by a highly expanded low density fluid, and viscously, by a viscous layer. As a direct consequence, as soon as the wedge angle is large enough, the mass flux through the slot is almost constant.

Beschreibung: An efficient hyperbolic grid generator with improvements for handling sharp corners and concave surfaces is combined with an efficient and accurate Navier-Stokes flow solver. This combination is applied to some rather complex two-dimensional airfoil configurations. Steady separated flow about an iced leading edge of an airfoil is presented. Unsteady viscous separated flows past an airfoil at two angles of attack with a spoiler deployed at 60 degrees are presented and compared with experiment. The spoiler computations are performed with two different topological maps of the physical domain to the computational domain. Innovative graphical techniques for both the static and unsteady display of the flow fields are presented and discussed.
