Description: A boundary-layer transition study on a sharp, 5 deg half-angle cone at various angles of attack was conducted at Mach 3.5. Transition data were obtained with and without significantly reduced freestream acoustic disturbance levels. A progressive downstream and upstream motion of the transition front on the windward and leeward rays, respectively, of the cone with angle of attack was observed for the high noise level data in agreement with data trends obtained in conventional ('noisy') wind tunnels. However, the downstream movement was not observed to the same degree for the low noise level data in the present study. Transition believed to be crossflow dominated was found to be less receptive to freestream acoustic disturbances than first-mode (Tollmien-Schlichting) dominated transition. The previously-developed crossflow transition Reynolds number criterion was found to be inadequate for the current case. An improved criterion is offered, which includes compressibility and flow-geometry effects.

Description: Concentrations of 10 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), the aliphatics as a group, sulfate, nitrate, fluoride, acidity, and carbon in the airborne particulate matter were measured at 16 sites in Cleveland, OH over a 1-year period during 1971 and 1972. Analytical methods used included gas chromatography, colorimetry, and combustion techniques. Uncertainties in the concentrations associated with the sampling procedures, and the analytical methods are evaluated. The data are discussed relative to other studies and source origins. High concentrations downwind of coke ovens for 3,4 benzopyrene are discussed. Hydrocarbon correlation studies indicated no significant relations among compounds studied.

Description: Concentrations of 60 chemical elements in the airborne particulate matter were measured at 16 sites in Cleveland, OH over a 1 year period during 1971 and 1972 (45 to 50 sampling days). Analytical methods used included instrumental neutron activation, emission spectroscopy, and combustion techniques. Uncertainties in the concentrations associated with the sampling procedures, the analytical methods, the use of several analytical facilities, and samples with concentrations below the detection limits are evaluated in detail. The data are discussed in relation to other studies and source origins. The trace constituent concentrations as a function of wind direction are used to suggest a practical method for air pollution source identification.

Description: Concentrations of 75 chemical constituents in the airborne particulate matter were measured in Cleveland, Ohio during 1971 and 1972. Daily values, maxima, geometric means and their standard deviations covering a 1-year period (45 to 50 sampling days) at each of 16 sites are presented on microfiche for 60 elements, and for a lesser number of days for 10 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (PAH), the aliphatic hydrocarbon compounds (AH) as a group and carbon. In addition, concentration roses showing directional properties are presented for 39 elements, 10 PAH and the AH as a group. The elements (except carbon) are shown both in terms of concentration and percentage of the suspended particulate matter.

Description: A program was conducted to reduce and analyze inlet and engine data obtained during testing of a TF30-P-3 engine operating behind a mixed compression inlet. Previously developed distortion analysis techniques were applied to the data to assist in the development of a new distortion methodology. Instantaneous distortion techniques were refined as part of the distortion methodology development. A technique for estimating maximum levels of instantaneous distortion from steady state and average turbulence data was also developed as part of the program.

Description: A practical procedure for the design of low drag, transonic airfoils is demonstrated. The procedure uses an optimization program, based on a gradient algorithm coupled with an aerodynamic analysis program, that solves the full, non-linear potential equation for transonic flow. The procedure is useful for the design of retrofit modifications for drag reduction of existing aircraft as well as for the design of low drag profiles for new aircraft. Results are presented for the modification of four different airfoils to decrease the drag at a given transonic Mach number.

Description: An empirically derived method of estimating maximum levels of instantaneous inlet total pressure distortion from steady state measurements is presented. The estimation procedure uses steady state total pressure and root mean square turbulent pressure data measurements to synthesize instantaneous distortion patterns. The synthesis method is tailored to intensify distortion patterns in a manner consistent with the characteristics of the particular index to be used in evaluating inlet/engine compatability. The maximum expected value of distortion, a statistically determined function of the length of time of inlet operation, is used to constrain the amount of pattern intensification. Comparison with an independent set of data is presented for verification of the synthesis method.

Description: An approach to the analysis of a very large elemental concentration data set. The particular data considered was generated by instrumental neutron activation and emission spectroscopy analyses of over 750 24-hour ambient air particulate samples collected at 16 sites in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 15 months from August 1971 thru October 1972. Examples are presented that show the use of multiple approaches to interpreting the data, including pairwise correlation statistics, selective data plotting and cluster analysis.

Description: Directional air samplers, used for resolving suspended particulate matter on the basis of time and wind direction were used to assess the feasibility of characterizing and identifying emission source types in urban multisource environments. Filters were evaluated for 16 elements and X-ray fluorescence methods yielded elemental concentrations for direction, day, and the interaction of direction and day. Large numbers of samples are necessary to compensate for large day-to-day variations caused by wind perturbations and/or source changes.
