Description: Earthquake sheds light on plate boundary Aktar et al. analyze the mainshock and aftershocks of the moderate-sized, June 1998 Adana earthquake, Turkey, and find that the rupture nucleated at an unusually deep seismogenic zone, within the lower crust, and did not extend to shallower zones. The earthquake is associated with the African and Anatolian lithospheres which interact with each other in a strike-slip manner. The authors report that the mainshock's and largest aftershock's pure left lateral strike-slip mechanism supports the hypothesis that the nature of relative plate motion for the Africa-Anatolia plate boundary is pure left-handed strike slip at least in the region where the mainshock took place.
