    Notes: Abstract Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy has been utilized to measure the dispersion and symmetry of the spectral features in thed band region of Ni induced by the adsorption of CO. Very strong alteration of thed-band emission characteristics are observed when CO is adsorbed onto Ni(110) in the (2×1) p2mg ordered phase. The high density and unique symmetry of this overlayer allows an unambigeous identification of these spectral features as the two-dimensionalπ-d surface bands induced by the chemical bond of CO to Ni, i.e. the CO 2π-Ni 3d interaction. These results make it possible to reconcile other measurements and to generate a more definitive picture of how the Blyholder model for CO-metal interaction should be applied to surfaces.

    Notes: Es wird die Beobachtung einer Umwandlung α-Al2O3 in β-Al2O3 beschrieben. Maßgebend hierfür ist der durch eine Flußsäurebehandlung auftretende Chiolith, 3AlF3 · 5NaF, welcher beim Erhitzen zusammen mit dem Korund unter Bildung von β-Al2O3 reagiert. Die Untersuchungen sind außer an Pulvern auch an Einkristallen von Korund sowie Spinell durchgeführt worden und stellen Beispiele für die Erscheinung der orientierten Aufwachsung (Epitaxie) dar.

    Notes: Die Einwirkung kryolithähnlicher Schmelzen auf α-Al2O3 wird untersucht. Beim Li-Kryolith bildet sich über eine Zwischenphase der Spinell LiAl5O8, beim K-Kryolith dagegen β-Al2O3. Bei Verwendung von Kryolithionit bilden sich aus α-Al2O3 etwa zu gleichen Teilen Li-Spinell und β-Al2O3. Mit Alkalihexafluoroferrat(III) tritt ebenfalls eine Umwandlung des Korunds ein, wobei Fe in das Gitter der Reaktionsprodukte eingebaut wird. Alle Endprodukte enthalten kein Fluor. α-Fe2O3 verändert sich gegenüber kryolithähnlichen Schmelzen nicht.

    Notes: The consistency of a recently proposed algorithm for background correction in XPS is studied, under variation of the XPS peak energy, by use of synchrotron radiation. Two approximations for the inelastic scattering properties of the solid are investigated. Both algorithms are found to account well for the variation in the inelastic scattering properties of the solid when the Au 4f XPS peak energy is varied. Small differences can be ascribed to the influence of surface excitations which are not included in the algorithm.
