Notes: Abstract The paper describes a photoacoustic spectrometer for detection of NH3 in power plant emission with a detection limit below 1 ppm. The radiation source is a tunable CO2 waveguide laser, and detection is performed at reduced pressure, where the vibration-rotation lines of NH3 are essentially Doppler broadened. Immunity against interference is ensured by recording a characteristic spectral profile, and problems associated with the high concentration of CO2, and the associated line center absorption are eliminated by utilizing the effect of kinetic cooling on the photoacoustic phase. A computerized spectrometer has been constructed and tested under realistic conditions at a Danish power plant operating a test facility for selective non-catalytic reduction of NO x . Results of this field test are given.

Notes: Abstract A variable temperature photoacoustic cell has been constructed and tested by studying the interplay of CO2, H2O, and NH3 in synthetic smoke. Saturation effects for CO2 and NH3 have been modeled and compared with experiments, and results are obtained for the vibrational relaxation rate associated with NH3-H2O collisions. The cell has been used for studying the temperature dependence of self-broadening and N2 broadening of CO2 lines. The temperature dependence of the scattering rate is well described by a T −n law with n=0.77 in both cases. This result agrees with previous results obtained by tunable diode laser spectroscopy, but disagrees with results obtained by indirect methods.

Notes: Abstract Using a quasi-CW CO2 oscillator-amplifier combination with peak power 300 Watt, we have generated FIR laser emission in weak absorption bands of CH3OH. 40 new lines are reported, and their wavelengths are measured with a relative accuracy of 5×10−5. A total of 72 lines are assigned. 34 of these involve torsional n=1, 2, and 3 states of the CO stretch and the vibrational ground state. The remaining lines are associated with the CH3-rock, OH-bend, and CH3-deformation modes. The latter are located 1460 cm−1 above the ground state, and are pumped by simultaneous vibrational excitation and torsional deexcitation.

Notes: Abstract Using output coupling by reststrahlen reflection from NaCl we have observed 14 new FIR lines in the wavelength range between 30 μm and 60 μm. Two of them have been identified as torsional n=1→0 transitions in the CO stretch vibration. Together with lines previously reported in the literature they are the basis for an identification of 41 FIR lines associated with torsionally excited states.
