In:  Supplement to: Jain, Sreepat; Collins, Laurel S; Hayek, Lee-Ann C (2007): Relationship of benthic foraminiferal diversity to paleoproductivity in the Neogene Caribbean. Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 255(3-4), 223-245, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.palaeo.2007.05.017

Description: Diversity trends 8.3-2.5 Ma in Caribbean deep-sea foraminifera, as interpreted from the indices Fisher's alpha and the Information Index [H(S)] parallel paleoproductivity proxies (benthic foraminiferal infaunal/epifaunal species ratio, benthic foraminifer accumulation rates and flux of organic carbon to the seafloor). Paleoproductivity never reached an eutrophic threshold value above which we would predict opposite trends of high paleoproductivity and low diversity, consistent with stressful conditions. Instead, results are similar to those from other studies of oligotrophic settings that show a positive and statistically significant correlation between paleoproductivity and diversity. The correlations between current intensity and watermass oxygenation with diversity are negative and statistically significant. These results are also borne out by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Intervals of increased relative abundance of Epistominella exigua, a proxy for seasonality of phytodetrital input to the seafloor, coincide with increased diversity, suggesting that pulsed paleoproductivity enhanced the diversity signal in the Caribbean. Diversity and paleoproductivity peaked in the Caribbean at 7.9 Ma, and declined thereafter due to the cut off of the nutrient-rich Pacific deep waters (〈1000 m) into the Caribbean. From 7.6 to 4.2 Ma, both diversity and paleoproductivity increased. With the complete closure of the Caribbean-Pacific seaway at 4.2 Ma, both diversity and paleoproductivity gradually decreased from a high at 4.2 Ma to moderate values until the end of the study interval at 2.5 Ma. Major intervals of significant shifts in Caribbean diversity and paleoproductivity were also confirmed with SHEBI analysis that displays a diverging trend between the Pacific and Caribbean sites since 7.9 Ma, with the Caribbean displaying decreasing values. In summary, in the Caribbean, decreased paleoproductivity due to the gradual constriction and the final closure of the Central American Seaway (CAS) led to decreased deep-sea benthic foraminiferal diversity and that both benthic foraminiferal diversity and paleoproductivity maintained a positive relationship.

Notes: Abstract Reducible transition metal oxides are well-known promoters of the hydrogenation of CO on noble metal surfaces. In this study the promotional effect of vanadia and ceria adlayers on Rh and Pd surfaces was investigated with emphasis on the effect of the oxidation state on CO adsorption and catalytic activity. “Inverse supported catalysts” were prepared by UHV deposition of V and Ce on the noble metal surface (Rh(111), Pd(111) or Rh foil). After oxidation and specified reduction, the reaction kinetics on polycrystalline Rh was measured at atmospheric pressure, and the molecular and dissociative chemisorption of CO on Rh(111) and Pd(111) and the methanation kinetics on Rh(111) were investigated by molecular beam techniques. On Rh(111), the probability of CO dissociation and the reaction rate are enhanced by submonolayer VO x deposits. Local pressures between 10-2 and 1 mbar are sufficient to drive the methanation at 573 K with measurable amounts of products, accompanied by significant restructuring of the catalyst surface. Although the reaction on Rh is generally promoted by small quantities of vanadia and ceria, the reaction rates depend strongly on the extent and temperature of hydrogen reduction. The observed increase of the reaction rate by reduction up to 673 K can be correlated to concomitant changes of the structure and composition of the VO x deposits. If the reduction temperature is raised above 673 K, metallic V is partially dissolved in the bulk, and the resulting V/Rh subsurface alloy exhibits a particularly high activity. Contrary to vanadia, ceria islands on Rh promote the initial reaction only after a low-temperature reduction, but the activity decreases after reduction above 573 K.

Notes: New methods are presented for the evaluation of ion structures and fragmentation pathways using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) with low energy collision-induced dissociation. As an aid for mass spectroscopists, they incorporate a PC software package (named PDNL, written in Turbo-PASCAL 5.5 (Borland), running under DOS (Microsoft) with mouse-control). A database of almost 300 low energy MS/MS spetra is available for library searches. It utilizes a new, intensity-based matching algorithm fitting to the demand of MS/MS data. Computational methods have been developed for (i) the separation of the spectra of unresolved isobaric ions and evaluation of the ratio of the ion abundances, (ii) the evaluation of single-collision spectra using the multi-collisional data map, and (iii) the elucidation of collision-induced dissociation fragmentation pathways. Principal component analyses of sets of at least eight MS/MS spectra were used for a quick comparison of these spectra and for a summary of inter-ion relationships.
